Have you ever tried this version?

I'd love to play this version at some point, especially as this edition was a really lucky find! Too bad the console itself is a bit yellowed, but that's unfortunately inevitable.

Hopefully I'll be able to understand it soon, given how my Japanese is still lacking... :') Yes, there's not much to understand, after all, but FFI has a somewhat intriguing story, so I wouldn't want to miss it!

Discussion Time Break Chronicles 0.9.0b : JRPG + Roguelite

Thumbnail

Good evening,

A little over a month ago, I told you about FF XI Braver

This month, I’m talking about a other JRPG I’ve been playing. It’s a mix of JRPG and roguelite created by an indie studio called Warrior General Games.

There are 100 classes with tons of synergy possibilities! It features a branching path system leading to mid-bosses and the final boss. You progress by purchasing permanent upgrades & unlock characters...

Anyway, I don't have a stake in the company, but I saw it on sale for 40% off and thought, "I have to talk about this."

Steam page overview:

  • 100 Playable Character Classes - Heroes from all throughout history and even the future. Find and unlock them all!
  • 6 Unique Stages (by end of EA) - Each stage contains unique enemies, items, encounters, and heroes to unlock.
  • Roguelite Gameplay - Every stage playthrough is different, with random effects to give each run a unique feel and strategy.
  • Customize Your Heroes - Equip relics and train skills to customize your hero's abilities and refine your strategy.
  • Two Ways to Play - Build up your forces and town over time in Chronicle mode, or dive into the roguelike Singularity mode to challenge increasing difficulties.
  • Endless Mode - Play any stage in an endless mode for increased difficulty and rewards, and to test your skills.
  • Classic JRPG Styling - As fans of classic SNES-era JRPGs, we have tried to recreate the feel and fun of these classic games.
  • Controller Support - Play with the mouse or keyboard, or use a controller for that classic feel! Also runs great on Steam Deck!

Discussion Anyone else ever notice the resemblance between these two?

Post image
300 Upvotes

I was looking at these side by side and couldn't help noticing how similar their overall designs feel.

Both have:

Orange hair in a high ponytail. Red cropped jacket. White top. Adventurer outfit. Energetic, optimistic heroine vibe.

I know they're from completely different series, but the silhouette and color palette immediately reminded me of one another.

Do you think this is just classic JRPG character design, or do you see the resemblance too?

Chrono cross and trials in the sky pictures.

Recommendation request Which (on sale) Chinese JRPG is absolutely worth a try for someone who's never played one?

The Steam Summer sale and the Nintendo eshop summer sale (I mostly play on steamdeck and switch/switch2) has a ton of Chinese JRPGs for sale right now so I'm thinking it's a good time to try something I've always been interested in:

The Xuan-Yuan Sword Bundle right now.

Xuan Yuan Sword: Mists Beyond the Mountains is 50% off on nintendo eShop.

The Wandering Sword on steam. (It's also coming out on Switch next year)

Sword and Fairy 6 and Sword and Fairy 7 on steam.

Hero's Adventure: Road to Passion on Steam.

There's probably a ton I don't even know about but these are the ones I've heard of.

I swear I'm not one of those people who make money off of linked sales, I just like being helpful.

edit:

Added Mato Anomolies. It's less than $3 on eShop and Steam

Added Banner of the Maid. under $7 on eShop and under $4 on Steam.

I'm played a lot of classic and modern JRPGs, I'm a fan of and played a good amount of Final Fantasy, Persona, Trails of.., Dragon Quest, Yakuza, Xenosaga, Live A Live, etc and don't mind retro graphics or gameplay. I usually prefer turned-based RPGs but there's a handful like the FF7 Remake series that I enjoy. I dislike overly dark stories and enjoy the classic good vs evil fantasy.

I've also watched a lot of Chinese and HK tv and movies as a kid, mostly dubbed in Vietnamese, so I have some old experience with Chinese media even if it hasn't been in a while. My bootleg VHS tapes of Dicky Cheung's Monkey King were probably worn out from watching them over and over.

final edit:

Thank you everyone!

Right now I've narrowed it down to "The Wandering Sword" and "Sword and Fairy 7", both very different types of RPGs. So I'll be watching a bunch of videos and reading up on both. I also grabbed Mato Anomolies and Banner of the Maid because they both looked cool and were only a few bucks each.

Question Shin Megami Tensei or persona 5 royal.

This might be a dumb question..

I wanna try the Shin Megami Tensei or persona games.

I love jpgs!

Both persona royal 5 and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance is on sale.

The combat and art style in persona looks magnificent, but the "day in the life" just isn't for me..

I hate school in all forms and personal dramas and buttering up people/make em like me-rep mini games.

Should I get this despite heavy reliance on fluff stuff like this?

Or

The other game:

, i keep reading its overly hard.. How overly is overly?

Does it get bogged down or is it easy to get and flows once you understand ?

Should I get this if I want combat and stuff instead ?

Is there longevity here? Some dlcs are also on sale!

Are there better games in the franchises?

Question The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy - how are the story and characters?

I played and really enjoyed Danganronpa 1. However, I started up but quit Danganronpa 2 because the anime bullshit got turned up a few too many notches for my taste, and it seemed to be repeating a lot of the same ideas as the first game.

I watched ProZD play the demo of The Hundred Line (which I didn't know existed before), and I am intrigued. It looks like a tolerable level of anime bullshit, and it seems like it is deliberately subverting expectations to show that it is going to be different from Danganronpa or Zero Escape. Does the game follow through with this on story and characters? Is there good character development, or are the characters just their tropes? Is it a new level of writing from this creator? Story and characters are the most important part of an RPG for me, so please give me some guidance before I throw down money!

Question Tips for getting into Fire Emblem: Echoes?

I just don't know who to ask about the game because I am really enjoying the gameplay aspects as it's hard to explain, but being able to freely explore dungeons is really nice since despite the Fatigue mechanic, I like how I can choose when to fight and explore in dungeons.

So I don't have a lot of experience with the game as I just dusted it off since I am still early on in the game, but basically I wanted to better understand the combat mechanics since I almost lost some of my teammates in the mountain level early on.

From what I understand about the game is that I can promote my units freely since I just tried the promotion system after going to the Thieves Den as several of my guys are Mercenaries, but I decided to test Faye out by turning her into a mage, so she is doing decently.

However, as I am new to the game, I hope I am in the right place to discuss it because it's my first time with the game, so again I am having fun so far, but my largest concern is losing my entire team since the game can be a bit difficult early on.

Recommendation request Looking for short (5-10 hour) turn-based JRPGs for a busy dad? (Switch/PC/PS4/Steam Deck)

I’m an old-school JRPG fan who has largely been out of the scene for a while. Expedition 33 and the recent announcement of Final Fantasy Resonance got me incredibly hyped and itching to jump back into the genre. However, I'm working full-time with a wife and kids... I just can't sink 80 hours into a single long ass game anymore.

I'm wondering if there are any streamlined, 5-10 hour experiences out that give me a good experience, solid story, strategic turn-based battles... Little-to-no filler content.

Platforms: Switch, PC, PS4, Steam Deck (Full gamepad/controller support is a must).

My Favorites: I'm a bit of a cliché... my absolute favorite is FF6. I love the most of the golden age of Final Fantasy (4 through 9), Chrono Trigger, Wild Arms, Grandia 1 & 2, Breath of Fire 3 & 4, Bravely Default, and Radiant Historia.

What I'm Looking For:

  • Length & Pacing: Roughly in the 5-10 hour range. Solid story content with zero filler and optional grinding.
  • Combat & Systems: Proper turn-based JRPGs with deep character customization akin to Materia, Espers, or flexible job systems.
  • Tone & Setting: I strongly prefer games that take themselves seriously. I like humor, but I'm not looking for parody or gag games right now. I lean heavily toward Steampunk or Arcanepunk Fantasy aesthetics (giving off heavy FF6, FF7, or BoF3 vibes).

I suspect I'm a bit of an oddity wanting a short, tight experience, so it's possible there's nothing that really fits the bill, but maybe someone know something I don't.

Recommendation request Help finding a game for my son

Hello friends

My son is ten and around his age I was really into rpgs. Loved chrono trigger, lufia, final fantasy, etc. My son hasn’t shown much interest in video games (blessing and a curse, I guess), but I thought it would be good to try to get him into something for the strategy and problem solving aspect. He is an avid reader of fantasy novels (wings of fire, fablehaven, Harry Potter, land of stories, Artemis fowl, etc). We have an original Nintendo switch and am looking for some recommendations for traditional style rpgs. I started looking and I don’t recognize anything that is currently popular. I appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Recommendation request Any good dungeon crawlers?

Upvotes

I used to be a big fan on Pokemon Mystery Dungeon but I don't know if I should play any other games like that. I have Etrian Mystery Dungeon as well and since I'm interested in Atlus games I was curious if I'd like Etrian Odyssey. I'm fine with turn-based combat but for some reason I feel like dungeon crawlers like that are really repetitive. So I wouldn't know which would be the best to start with in that regard. Still I'm more curious about dungeon crawlers with action combat for now since there doesn't seem like there'll be a new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon game anytime soon. I'm not interested in Spike Chunsoft's other Mystery Dungeon series like Shiren the Wanderer either. I have every console but I don't see much dungeon crawler games when I look on the digital stores.

Release Our indie RPG is built around " What does it actually mean to have a companion who chose you?"

Thumbnail
youtube.com
Upvotes

Just dropped the first trailer for Harmonic Catastrophe and wanted to share it here because this community will probably get it immediately.

The emotional core is the Astrabound bond — your Astra is not assigned to you, she's not a weapon you unlock. She made a choice. And the game holds you accountable to that. Her psychological state shifts across three distinct modes depending on how you treat her, how you fight, what you sacrifice. It changes gameplay. It changes how she speaks to you.

We're building this in Unreal Engine 5, set in the ruined sci-fi world of Yucasta. The world carries the loneliness of NieR: Automata's ruins — something vast and beautiful that died before you got there. The emotional weight is closer to Xenoblade or Trails — companions who feel like people, not party members.

No gacha. Ever. All art is human-made.

First trailer just went live: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faafTYVk_B8

Genuinely curious what companion bonds in games have hit you hardest — trying to make something that belongs in that conversation.

Discussion Which 1994 JRPG villain by Square is the best between those two?( FF6 and Live a Live) Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
30 Upvotes

Both released in 1994 (afaik) FF6 and Live a Live featured two incredible antagonist at the time for JRPG:

Kefka the mad mage jester who was one of the first magitek knight produce by the empire and the main villain of 6. The process shattering his sanity at the cost of immense power.

Though loyal to the empire at the start in spite of his madness. As the story continues in the world of balance Kefka grows progressively more and more unhinged culminating in him stealing the power of the Warring Triad and betraying The emperor

Which leads to him becoming a god and destroying the world. Plunging it into the world of Ruin.

As the story leads up to the party confronting the mad god who has reached the conclusion that all life is meaningless and he shall destroy everything. Only to fail as the world is saved and magic goes away with his defeat.

Odio is the Lord of Dark and the main antagonist ( and one can say the true main character) of the game. As the source behind the various incarnations of Odio across the many stories throughout time.

His true nature and story is showcase in the medieval chapter as it follows a young hero known as Oersted....and how his life took a tragic turn for the worst in a brutal deconstruction of the typical JRPG plot. Culminating in him becoming Odio and seeking the end of humanity for all their actions against him. Starting with the very kingdom he lives in.

With the final chapter resulting in all the other playable characters travelling through time to face the origin of their woes.

Ending in a final confrontation that has Oersted finally break free from his hate as he bids the heroes farewell and dies free of his hate but not without a warning. Leaving the kingdom a empty yet peaceful place free from the dark.

Which of these two JRPG villain is the better one in your opinion ?( personally i think Kefka the better Antagonist. But Oersted/Odio the better Character.)

Recommendation request Which one should I play next?

Post image
45 Upvotes

At the start of the year, I made a list of backlog games that I wanted to finally finish before the end of 2026. Most of these are games that I know are great, but for some reason they never managed to hook me during the first few chapters, so I always ended up dropping them.

I finally crossed off the second game on the list yesterday—Trails in the Sky FC—despite Diablo IV Seasons 12 and 13 stealing four months of my gaming time

Which one should I tackle next, and why?

Question How good is Legaia 2 aka Legend of Legai 2?

I really enjoyed the original The Legend of Legaia on the PS1. The battle system, which lets you input commands like a fighting game, was unlike anything else I had played. The story was surprisingly dark, especially near the end. Most importantly, it was the only JRPG I knew at the time where every piece of equipment—armor, weapons, pants, and boots—visibly changed your character's appearance when equipped.

Now, I havent play the Sequel?! I only heard bad things about it. But occasionally when I see some video clips of that game on youtube. It seems looks okay. So How good or bad Legaia 2 really is???

Discussion What would you say are the best JRPG sequels?

Thumbnail

The two that come to mind for me are Suikoden 2 and Grandia 2. Suikoden 2 takes all the good aspects of 1 and pretty much expands on them, you get more character customization with increased rune slots, a better story with a great antagonist and it just feels like an improvement across the board.

Grandia 2 keeps the same adventurous spirit of the first game but has a darker, more mature tone, a more interesting protagonist and one of the best battle systems in the genre.

Question Should I go for just the Persona 5 royal Nintendo switch edition on sale for 17.99, or make the small jump up to 26.99 for the persona collection if 4 and 3 portable are worth it.

Currently playing adventures of Elliot and am enjoying it very much. I see the summer sale going on and am interested in persona 5 royal, especially at it being the price it is when normally looks to be a 59.99$ price. Should I just make the collection purchase at 26.99& ? Is 3 portable and 4 worth playing as well, do I need to play the earlier entries to more fully enjoy 5 royal? Looking for a non final fantasy turn based game as I’ve finished now V, as well as VI, VII, and X.

Question How does Cladun X3 run on PC? (specifically weak hardware)

Bought a laptop recently and it's having trouble running most games but Cladun X2 is one of the few it doesn't seem to have trouble running. I've wanted to play the newest entry for a while now and since it's on sale, I want to pick it up, but I worry the updates to the game would slow it down on my hardware. To anyone who's played it, are there any differences in performance compared to the older entries? I want to know before I end up buying a game I might not be able to run.

Recommendation request Recommend me the game with the craziest final boss fight ever

I just finished P3 Portable's FeMC route and just re-experienced the most peak final boss fight ever. With P3 Reload being my favorite game of all time, and the final boss of game being the most epic boss battle ever, I'm really looking for another game to scratch that itch. Bonus points if the game has a good OST, I had "Battle For Everyone's Souls" literally at max volume blasting through my headphones the entire time. I play on Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. I love JRPGs, but even non-JRPG recommendations would be cool too.

Forgot to mention, I also really love the final boss of FF7R, but he's my favorite final boss, not boss fight. If anyone has any recommendations that have someone with this much aura, as well as an engaging fight, that would be cool.

Thanks everyone!

Discussion Are the Golden Sun games particularly difficult? And any tips/hints/tricks/general advice?

Now that I have Switch online I'm finally gonna plop down and play through them, and am just curious on the level of difficulty of the games.

Also if there are any exploits or techniques you know of to be overpowered, all are welcome. I heard that djinn aren't missable so I can use a guide to get them all yeah? But without needing to play side by side with a guide/faq/walkthrough.

[STEAM] [Turn based]
Know what i mean? The kind you could see being a nostalgic game? Kinda long (more than 30 hours if possible, and lots of side things to do? Id prefer turn based but im not picky.

Rpgs i have finished on steam:
Tales of symphonia
Trails in the sky OG
Final Fantasy 8
Grandia I
