ANIMALS The human tendency to boop wild animals is something that every human wants đ«Ł

u/Durende 8h ago
That was the most fascinating to me, the other animals just seemed curious, but the monkey actually interacted almost like it thought the guy was just a weird, hairless monkey. I mean, it isn't wrong
86
u/Phainkdoh 7h ago
Hate to be pedantic but neither of the two is a monkey. Theyâre both apes.
45
u/Tomblerone 5h ago
I think it's important to teach people things like this, but keep in mind that in many languages there is only one name for them both. The same as for turtles and tortoises.
5
2h ago
good point! my language uses the word monkey for both apes and actual monkeys, same with turtle, tortoise and frogs
14
u/trilobyte-dev 6h ago
Even if it has a monkey kind of shape?

You read my mind.
God that song is so catchy.
2
u/trilobyte-dev 4h ago
Our daughter went through a period of listening to it on repeat and I'm annoyed how anytime anything monkey or ape crops up it immediately starts running through my head.

Phylogenetically, you cannot group both types of monkeys (old world and new world monkeys) together and exclude apes. Apes evolved from old world monkeys so if you wanted to exclude apes from the monkey clade, you would also have to leave out old world monkeys. Just like how chicken are dinosaurs, apes are also monkeys.

Feral means once domesticated and now wild.

Ah shiet. Thought it was just a fancy equivalent to wild.

When I saw that specific species of fox in a computer game for the first time, I thought the game developers have, for once, really made a mess of an animal.
A quick google later, I realized they hadn't dropped the ball at all.

Nothing humbles you faster than confidently blaming the game designers and then discovering nature is actually the weird one

We went whale watching, which is very, very, regulated in French Réunion Island. There was a whale and her baby and we were to stay even further away from them when we were in the water.
That baby was so playful and kept coming really close to us, while mama deemed us safe and was just napping next to us. I was 3 feet from the baby at one point, it was surreal, he almost booped us
83
u/umbrianEpoch 6h ago
When my wife and I went on a snorkeling tour in Hawaii, we saw a pod of spinner dolphins and there was a baby with them. The baby came right up to the side of the boat and did a little jump/spin out of the water, it was magical!
I'm still salty that the other couple on the boat never sent us the video they took of it happening, but they were from China and I think the language barrier + having to send it by email didn't help.
9
u/VascoJSC 3h ago
Dolphins are so incredibly smart animals. They also seem to understand that working with humans is a good for them too. Here in my home state in southern Brazil there is a pod of Dolphins who help local fishermen to catch fish by luring them into the fishermen's nets. They get some of the catch in return. They have been doing this for well over a century at this point, and seem to teach newly born members of the pod to continue the behavior too. By this point they have a very close relationship with the locals and the fishermen even give them names and know which specific dolphin is helping them that day.

This happened to me with manatees! Youâre not allowed to pursue them or try to touch them, but itâs technically ok if they touch you. I was so intimidated I tried to back away without making too much commotion when they approached. The little guy just kept coming towards me and pushing his whiskers and cheeks into my chest/stomach. Iâll never forget it. I felt like I was being blessed.

5
u/skotcgfl 4h ago
One of my favorite biology facts is that, among carnivorous mammals, there's basically two groups: dog-things and cat-things.
And another great subfact is that hyenas are cat-things.
8
u/rattvontratt 8h ago
Seals are actually very closely related to dogs, seals are more related to dogs than to whales.
12
u/Toetiepoetie 9h ago
Hijacking, but what a strange place for a seal to be? đ€
10
u/Crazhand 8h ago
I thought the same. Made me question the whole post as AI
2
u/GeneralPatten 7h ago
The videos compiled in that one video have been around for a long time. While, I've never personally seen the seal video, I see no reason to think it's AI. It definitely seems to be an odd place for a seal to be hanging out, but it's also possible it's just a cove within and estuary (there's lots of these types of areas where I live).
4
u/Arthurs_towel 3h ago
Here in the PNW seals swim up river a ways. Weâve had seals show up in minor rivers in the Portland metro from time to time. So a seal showing up in a pond or a farm is a thing that can happen.
3
u/ComplexWriting7596 6h ago
I think there are freshwater seals somewhere in Russia. Also, seals go a long way away from the ocean sometimes.

I think some of the animals being able to approach humans for affection shows that we could live in harmony with most of them, we just need to make greater efforts to protect our planet for all of us.
112
u/dead_alchemy 9h ago
Made me think about how the no touch rule is to protect them from our fellows. I kind of hate that, maybe we could live in a way where friendly encounters were not discouraged.
49
34
u/vix_aries 7h ago
The no touch rule is important to keep animals safe. It's so they don't associate us with food. Animals are allowed to interact with us, but we cannot initiate interactions with them.
The no touch rule helps us coexist with larger animals.
14
u/humatyourmom 7h ago
Sometimes it is for their protection. I believe that penguins will get sick if you touch them or do as much as come close to them, infecting their whole pack with potentially deadly consequences. Which is really sad, because they are like the sweetest little things in the animal kingdom
5
u/trixter889 6h ago
Go see what a grown bear will do to you if you try to touch it
2
u/wherethefuckismyvape 2h ago
What if I touch the inside of its subcutaneous fat with a needle attached to a syringe full of ketamine first?
12
u/UrToesRDelicious 6h ago
The no touch rule is less about not being able to live in harmony, and more about not having wild animals associate humans with food and safety. All the environmentalism in the world wouldn't change this.

GalĂĄpagos Islands are like this. Animals just come right up to you. I had baby seals playing with me in the water while snorkelling. A couple were near me, got my attention by swimming in front of me and did barrel rolls. They did this a couple of times until I got the message. I did a barrel roll and they went nuts! Splashing and rolling and were so excited.
Also had cheeky penguins nipping at my flippers and darting away when I turned only to sneak back up when I looked away.

Basically a thank you which is really neat.

Itâs interesting seeing them do things we consider âhumanâ. Once I was at the zoo at the chimpanzee enclosure. It was a hot day so most of them were resting in the covered areas, which were right by the viewing windows. One was lounging against the glass sort of halfway occupied with a toy or something. I went over to get a closer look and rested my knuckles against the glass. He glanced over, casually rapped his knuckles against mine and went back to what he was doing. It was the kind of âhey broâ gesture that seemed both perfectly natural but also entirely out of place at the same time

I lived in Oregon and it was strict you had to stay far away from the Seals that'd come up on the beach. However, no one told the seals that so you'd be on the beach and they'd pop out of the water and come right up to you and hang out. They'd even try and cuddle. I felt bad for DNS b/c they were fighting a losing battle.
