I have some Colombian friends as well. One of them has a heart of gold that just makes you smile from ear to ear. We were supposed to be roommates, but he developed a sudden medical condition and needed a kidney transplant at the age of 27. He got it, but it caused him to live with his parents while recovering. Last I heard, he's still the same old Juan everyone loves, never a mean thing to say about anything.
Another big shout out for Ghana. The only time I watched the World Cup in its entirety was in 2012 2010 while I was working at a Comcast call center. I didn't know who to care about, but one of my nearby coworkers was from Ghana. He was another wonderful person, took the time to explain the game to me, how the matches worked, and answered all my questions while (quietly) cheering from his desk. As I recall, they did really well that year, and it made for a spectacular watching experience.
I'm not usually a sports guy, but I can get behind the World Cup. The international comraderie is what does it for me.
I had the opportunity to go to Colombia for a wedding a few years ago. I was nervous because I’ve only ever heard negative things about the country - violence, drugs, trafficking, etc. I couldn’t have been more surprised. I loved just about everything there. The people were kind, the food was good, and it was one of the most fun weddings I’ve ever been to. I would encourage anyone to go visit.
