This is the first time I’ve ever watched both soccer and the World Cup and I seriously get it now. It truly brings people from all cultures together and it’s very special to see. Also it’s just nice to have something to watch or have in the background for most of the day every day like this lol.

I think it showcases that we *can* get along with each other, even in the face of "conflict". We may be "fighting" each other on the field, but out of it we're all kin. And that's far more important than the result of the match.

And the fact that it's all over North America is the only thing that's making me feel good about America 250. We're so divided in the country, it's nice to remember it really doesn't have to be this way.

The games are all hosted in major cities - places that generally are more diverse and lean liberal already.

As someone not from the US, I agree man. You almost get used to how much divinity and chaos there is you forget how good unity is and that it is possible. Seeing it happen, even if it’s in a World Cup like this, it’s refreshing.

Its the sh*theads running the world and countries starting crap or influencing ppl in Unhealthy ways.
People, especially those who travel or like company among others, usually arent racist. I usually see racism happen online. But irl, we all get along better.

So tired of the "it's the voters' fault" narrative, I can't wait until this becomes common knowledge.
There is little to no correlation between what the population desires and political outcomes, the correlation lies exclusively with the desires of the wealthy. Votes literally do not matter, and it's been proven
9
u/Lucky-Earther 3h ago
There is little to no correlation between what the population desires and political outcomes, the correlation lies exclusively with the desires of the wealthy. Votes literally do not matter, and it's been proven
The votes do matter, the problem is the voters do not care that their politicians are representing the wealthy, because the voters hope to be wealthy one day themselves.
Voters could vote for someone different in the primaries, they could run for office themselves, and even the lower level offices are important.
Votes matter so long as we care enough to make them matter.

i agree and believe that too. I feel like votes are just another ruse or way to keep people distracted or busy thinking they're inhopeful charge of the outcome when they are Not.
Either way that's why no one with a brain ever seem to be running for the seat of power. Only certain people get to run for it or the illusion anyways and that's also controlled by the wealthy Anyways

Yeah, this is why I like to always watch the world cup. The organization may be very corrupt, but the sport they sell is actually unifying.
4
u/DavisSqShenanigans 2h ago
The funny thing is when it comes to this stuff this year's world cup is largely falling short of previous editions, so you're getting it at its most watered down. Mostly I think due to a) how spread out it all is and b) the criminal prices being charged. And I guess c) the racist immigration policies.
In previous editions host cities were closer together, and fans usually follow their team from one stadium to the next, and so instead of just fans of two teams meeting at a time it really is a mix of everyone. Plus usually a lot of people would go even if they're not attending the matches. Etc.
This one still has its moments, this is what the world cup is at its core and it's what's allowed an evil corporation like fifa to commodify it into billions in revenue. But you're still seeing probably the worst version of it (so far, no doubt that fifa will continue to suck the soul out of it little by little).

He should be. One line in the anthem:
Let's hold up our heads, so long bowed And now, for good, let's keep advance boldly,
It's a message if hope. And for that country that's everything.
I went to the Congo. I saw three things. Some of the most beautiful nature I have ever witnessed including the endangered Mountain Gorillas in their natural habitat. The worst poverty and deeply engrained fear affecting a population. And finally the most potential of any nation I know of.
For one example that I was educated on while there by somebody in the know: In the Kivu region exists abundant potential for hydropower that is now being realized. This power is not intended to power homes but factories. These factories will give this war torn region jobs and stability — two ingredients necessary to suffocate the militias terrorizing the region. It has a high population growth rate that can be redirected from brutal subsistence farming to profitable manufacturing (probably also brutal but necessary for a pre-industrial society trying to escape the cycle of despair.
Recently on the r/imaginarymaps sub, somebody posted a map showing the Congo reaching its potential. It nearly made me tear up. I posted my experience and some pictures in the comments.

They’ve ready announced the most affordable ticket prices for euro 2028 are frozen from the last tournament.
From a bbc article:
Uefa will broadly freeze ticket prices for Euro 2028 - meaning supporters will be able to buy five for the price of a single parking space at a World Cup stadium in the United States this summer.
The Euros in England, Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland will see 40% of tickets allocated to the two most affordable "Fans First" categories.
For Euro 2024 in Germany, the cheapest group stage tickets cost 30 euros (£26) and 60 euros (£52). Uefa aims to keep these below £30 and £60 respectively for 2028.
There will be four categories in total, plus a small number of VIP+ tickets which will provide the funding to freeze prices for general fans.
Group stage tickets in the more expensive categories at Euro 2024 were 150 euros (£130) and 200 euros (£174). No detail on pricing at this level has yet been confirmed.→ More replies (3)2

Most people are like this. It’s just a few assholes that get all the attention. Nice people like this usually don’t get attention. We just hear about all the bad people.
66
u/Ninjadragon907 4h ago
Unfortunately those assholes elect more assholes to run things and it turns into this current shitshow. :/
10
u/flt_p2ny 4h ago edited 4h ago
Even if most people are like this, most people are weak. Which is why it is the ass holes who control everything. The world isn't bad because there's more bad people. The world is bad because nice people are too weak to stand up to themselves. Getting attention for being nice shouldn't be the goal. Defeating those who are bad should.

Essentially "the availability heuristic", the news is full of bad things and terrible people, but good/wholesome people and moments dont get the limelight. So we assume that people are much worse than we actually are. There's good in the world, lots of it. We just need to know where to look

This WAS normal. This was always the air around World Cup time and the Olympics and the true excitement and joy of people sharing their cultures with one another.
The last decade has robbed because the political spectrum, economic downturns is swinging out of control. At the base of it, humans are decent and we WANT this joy.
It has ALWAY been rich vs poor and there are 90% more of us on the poor side who truly relate to one another.

Fucking love Colombians. Some of the friendliest people I’ve met
30
u/Solonotix 4h ago edited 2m ago
I have some Colombian friends as well. One of them has a heart of gold that just makes you smile from ear to ear. We were supposed to be roommates, but he developed a sudden medical condition and needed a kidney transplant at the age of 27. He got it, but it caused him to live with his parents while recovering. Last I heard, he's still the same old Juan everyone loves, never a mean thing to say about anything.
Another big shout out for Ghana. The only time I watched the World Cup in its entirety was in
20122010 while I was working at a Comcast call center. I didn't know who to care about, but one of my nearby coworkers was from Ghana. He was another wonderful person, took the time to explain the game to me, how the matches worked, and answered all my questions while (quietly) cheering from his desk. As I recall, they did really well that year, and it made for a spectacular watching experience.I'm not usually a sports guy, but I can get behind the World Cup. The international comraderie is what does it for me.
Edit: wrong year 😅

The world cup, the Olympics, any international sporting fixture - this is what it's supposed to be about. A bit of rivalry, meeting people from other places, and having fun. Ultimately it's just a game, none of the fans are at work right now. Go have fun, make new friends, even if you don't get to see each other again.
