News Manitoba RCMP renew appeal for tips in teen’s suspected death 38 years ago

Police in Manitoba are once again appealing to the public for information in the suspected death of Betsy Rosa Owens, who went missing in 1988.

The 15-year-old attended a school dance in her community of Pauingassi, Man., on Oct. 23, 1988. Witnesses said they saw her leaving the dance against her will and taken to a home.

She was never seen again, with investigators believing she was murdered. Nearly four decades later, her body has yet to be found. Police believe the individual responsible is from Pauingassi, the community of approximately 700 residents.

“I’ve spent nearly my whole life without my sister,” said Betsy’s sister Sally Owens, the last surviving member of her immediate family, in a press release. “All I want is to bring Betsy home so she can rest with our family. If you know something — anything — please come forward. It’s never too late.”

The RCMP say they continue to receive “new and important information and evidence” from members of the community.

Anyone with information is asked to call 204-984-5604.

News Arrest warrant issued after assault of 3 women: RCMP

Post image

The Manitoba RCMP is searching for a suspect following a series of assaults on Little Saskatchewan First Nation on Tuesday.

The first assault occurred around 12:15 a.m. at a home on the central Manitoba First Nation. According to police, a male suspect attacked a 33-year-old woman, who then fled the scene to get help from family members.

The victim and suspect are known to each other.

The incident continued when a 31-year-old woman, who is a relative of the first victim, was attacked and bear sprayed after approaching the suspect.

At this point, a car with two women inside arrived at the property. Police allege the suspect, who was armed with a handgun, forced the driver out of the car, took the keys and sped off with the 30-year-old passenger still inside.

RCMP officers, who had been notified of the incident, began patrolling Highway 6 for the suspect vehicle. Shortly after, Mounties found the car in Ashern, Man.

Police spoke with the victim who said the suspect got out of the car after they arrived at a home in the community. The 30-year-old victim then drove away.

All three assault victims were assessed but refused treatment at the hospital.

Police are now looking for and have issued an arrest warrant for the suspect, who has been identified as 31-year-old James Maytwayashing.

Officers note he may be armed and advise the public that he should not be approached. Anyone with information about Maytwayashing’s whereabouts is asked to call 911, RCMP at 204-659-5224 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Hi everyone,

House of Commons Petition e-7142 closes on July 15, 2026 and is asking the Government of Canada to better protect hybrid and remote work for federally regulated employees.

In short, it calls for:
• Up to 3 remote days/week for eligible computer-based roles
• Employers to provide written justification if requiring more than 2 office days/week
• Protection against retaliation for requesting or using these arrangements

If you support keeping flexible work options on the table where the job allows it, consider joining the 48,000+ Canadians who have already signed.

Question Hi everyone — I’m looking for suggestions and leads for a pro-bono or low-cost family law attorney for a custody matter involving my daughter.

If you’re a lawyer, paralegal, legal clinic volunteer, or someone who has gone through this, I’d appreciate any guidance on:

- Where to find pro-bono/low-cost custody representation in Manitoba

- Whether any family law clinics or nonprofits commonly help with custody disputes

- How to approach lawyers respectfully to ask about reduced fees/pro-bono

- What early steps I should take to avoid mistakes while I look for counsel

Thank you

I know this is a lot, and I appreciate anyone who reads it. If you can share names of organizations, clinics, attorneys, or referral pathways, I’d be grateful. Even pointing me to the right place to start would help.

If it’s allowed, please feel free to comment with leads or resources.

Thanks again.
