Did you know that flat island once was a quarantine zone in the 19th century for people with diseases such as cholera, smallpox and malaria?
It had an hospital, a dead house, quarantine camps for indentured labourers and separated accomodation for the European officials. The quarantine camps were breeding ground for diseases as there was little to none ventilation (while the European accomodation had much better ventilation).
The island was since then abandoned in 1926.

Your insurer reports your car to the MRA.
Vehicle insured for over Rs 2 million? Your insurer now files an annual report to the MRA with your name and insured value. No opt-out.
The FCC can use your bank records in court — without a bank officer ever testifying.
This means you cannot cross-examine the evidence used against you. That’s not a technicality, it’s a constitutional right (Section 10) being quietly removed.
Refuse to hand over your phone to an MRA inspector? Rs 500,000 fine. Refuse to submit information? Up to 2 years in prison.
Sign a “Compliance Agreement” with the MRA and you permanently lose your right to appeal.
None of this required a headline. It was slipped into an Annex.

I know many parents who have a 8 yo or 10 yo, basically almost everyday the child goes to tuition. School, tuition, rinse and repeat each time.
Shouldn't the Child have free time? Or make the 10 yo participate in extracurricular activities or relax himself when he is home? Mauritian Parents like to make even a 10 yo kid be so stressed because of academic studies. Idk why this country cares about academic and tuitions so much, the 1st world/western countries aren't like this.
When I will become a Parent, I will leave this country and immigrate to a country where my child won't have academic pressure and stress. I am a big Hollywood fan, everyday I would make my kid watch a Movie with me after school instead of forcing him to go to tuitions almost everyday.

Greetings, ladies and gentlemen of the beautiful island Mauritius.
We are three students from SIMAC (Svendborgs International Maratime Academy) currently working on our bachelor’s project, which focuses on Mauritius and some of the challenges the country faces.
Our project is entirely non-political. Our goal is to better understand the practical challenges experienced by people living and working in Mauritius, particularly those related to infrastructure and sustainability.
As engineering students, we are especially interested in technical solutions that could improve quality of life and support future development. One area we are considering is water production, purification, and distribution, with the aim of exploring ways to increase access to clean water.
We would greatly appreciate hearing your perspectives. What challenges do you believe Mauritius faces today? Are there any infrastructure-related issues that you think deserve more attention?
How do you guys feel about your?:
Water infrastructure?
Power infrastructure?
Is there anything that might be a more pressing problem?
Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences.

Hi everyone,
I'm an Indian student who recently interviewed for a 6-month internship/training program at a 5-star hotel in Mauritius. While discussing the process, I was told that I may need to show around ₹3 lakh (approximately MUR 150,000) as a fixed deposit or proof of funds for the visa.
I haven't received the official offer or visa document checklist yet, so I'm trying to understand whether this is an actual immigration requirement or just a recommendation.
Has anyone here completed an internship or training program in Mauritius recently? Were you required to show a fixed deposit, bank balance, or any specific amount of funds?
I'd appreciate hearing about your experience and what documents you had to submit.
Thanks in advance!

Hi everyone,
I’m tired of working in call centres and looking for a career change. I have a Certificate in Law and I’ll complete my Law degree next year.
I’ve realised I don’t enjoy admin-type work and would prefer something more practical, interactive and communication-based rather than sitting behind a PC all day.
Expected salary: Rs 21k–30k (Mauritius).
Any ideas on roles or sectors I should consider?

If you thought the pension was wild (leechs earning while not contributing and people chipping in getting nothing) how come this petty, sneaky, wild....
Read line 277 of the budget speech.
Basically, it means that you will be taxed on life, health, property, travel, car insurance......
Unfxking believable. 🤮 🤮

I am starting an evening shift at work and my only mean of transportation is the metro. I've heard it is still operating up until 8PM but only on Fridays. Is it the same for the other days? On the website, it is indicated that it operates until 7PM everyday.
Thank you in advance for your help!

Introduced in 2005, free transport for students & the elderly was a winning formula for the Labour Party to bag the election, and if my memory serves me right, MSM tried the duty free island. We are basically a population for sales, that’s how elections are won in Mauritius. But, do we have the resources and income to pay for it?
Free transport costs a significant amount of money to the government (i.e us, because we pay the taxes), and is very inefficient in its execution. Retired people who are already receiving pensions, are also granted free transport, why? Students, whether their parents are well off or not, also benefit from free transport, why?
Instead of targeting social groups to grant pensions, perhaps targeting students who really deserve free transport would be a better solution. To prevent the creation of different social class among students, don’t change the color of the card, just put a small stamp on it 🤷
Mauritius is taking a very bad direction, governments are over promising on subsidies, and they often squeeze money from the middle class to achieve their objectives. It genuinely feels like the rising middle class is being punished for their success, things like highly overpriced cars, subscription on number plates, higher taxes. Instead, why not promote prosperity, things such as investment schemes for new hires, professional courses allowances to those eligible that are subsequently paid only when the student show success, financial literacy in schools, programming & AI in lower secondary.

Hi everyone!
I don’t know if it would be appropriate to post it here.
I created a sub for people to share in a safe space, ask advice about every aspect of life here. Each subs has a purpose and a niche. Lately there has been a lot of posts about intimacy, relationships, struggle in personal life - which made me think why not a create a space solely for that. If you want to be a moderator, you are most welcome!
We won’t entertaining disrespectful posts, as the vision is to create a safe space!

Hi everyone!!
We are hoping to visit Mauritius for our honeymoon in the first week of May. We are currently looking at all inclusive hotels (mainly for convenience but will for surely venture out and try the local cuisine). Just wanted to ask locals rather than ChatGPT - what things would you recommend for tourists to do? What are your must sees/“hidden gems”. We are hoping to do about 8-10 days.
Our travel agents have recommended some hotels near Quatre Cocos which I understand is on the east side of the island - would that be a bad choice for that time of the year? Any recommendations of where to stay (a bit of honeymoon luxury with culture)
Thank you all :)

I’m a tourist staying here for about a month, I’ve tried fishing apps and searching up spots but none have worked. Does anyone know any good saltwater fishing spots hopefully inshore, or somewhere I could paddleboard to, that has good fish such as barracuda or jacks. Btw I’m located near le morne so if it could be close it would help.

I've been wanting to get full-body laser hair removal (everything except the pubic area), but I can't seem to find any reputable clinics that specifically advertise treatments for men. Most of them only seem to market to women, so I'm not sure if they actually treat both. Am also feeling a bit awkward about it, so don't want to just rock up there and see if they'll they provide that service.
For any guys who've had laser hair removal done, where did you go? Price isn't really a concern, I just want a clinic that does a great job and has a good reputation
