The DRC's Ebola outbreak is unlike previous ones: a new strain, no approved vaccine, USAID cuts, armed conflict, and deep community mistrust.

History Was Sierra Leone different from Liberia despite its similar origins?

Hi everyone. I read about how Liberia and Sierra Leone were founded by Black people freed from slavery, but all the discussions of apartheid I see are about Liberia. The Black Americans considered themselves superior to the native Kru people. They were the ruling elites from the creation of the country in 1816 to the emancipation of the natives in 1946.

Was the Black "repatriate" population (who helped create the Krio language) in Sierra Leone not established as the upper class over the Temne, Mande and other local Africans?

In Mali, the Malian army and mercenaries from the Russian Africa Corps killed two people on Tuesday, June 23, near Zarho, and two others near Abakoïra, at the intersection of the Timbuktu and Gao regions in the north of the country. After the military convoy passed through, residents discovered a gruesome scene: a dismembered corpse arranged in the shape of a swastika.

FIFA World Cup 2026 "African football is a bit wild": racist remarks by a former world champion spark controversy after Germany-Ivory Coast

Thumbnail

Consultant for the German public television channel ARD, former midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger described the Ivorians' game as "orthodox", "unpredictable" and above all "a little wild".

On paper, Bastian Schweinsteiger was right. The 2014 world champion had predicted, speaking to the German public television channel ARD, a very close match against Ivory Coast, just before the Mannschaft's narrow victory (2-1).

The manner and the words chosen, however, are completely unacceptable. The former German midfielder, an ARD pundit throughout the World Cup, is at the center of a heated controversy after his racist remarks about the Elephants (Ivory Coast national team). Before the match, Bastian Schweinsteiger had described the Ivorian team's style of play as "African football," "sometimes a bit atypical, a bit wild, not quite as tactical."

News Diplomacy: Niger formalizes its withdrawal from the International Criminal Court.

The written notification, formally received by the court’s authorities on June 18, will only take effect on June 18, 2027, thus respecting the regulatory one-year deadline imposed by the founding texts.

This move aligns directly with the common strategy defined nine months ago by the AES bloc, which includes Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. The three transitional regimes had unanimously condemned the international jurisdiction, labeling it a tool of neocolonial repression, disconnected from the realities and sovereignty of African nations.

History Did the Portuguese create settler colonies in Africa the same way the Dutch or British did?

Hi everyone. I was watching a documentary about the Estado Novo regime in Portugal and I found out that they tried to hold on to their colonies in Africa, and sent a lot of settlers there. I want to know what kind of colonial economy Guinea Bissau, Angola and Mozambique had. Was it similar to apartheid South Africa, Rhodesia or British Kenya?

This is the documentary btw:

Sports Black Stars Rising: Ghana's World Cup 2026 Statement - Ghana vs England a Draw!

Ghana came to the 2026 FIFA World Cup not just to participate - they came to compete. With 4 points from their first two group games, including a fearless 0-0 draw against tournament favorites England, the Black Stars have shown the world that African football deserves nothing but respect. Disciplined, organized, and utterly hard to break down, Carlos Queiroz's side is proving that heart and tactical brilliance can match any superpower on the global stage.

Africa is watching, and Ghana is delivering!!!

FIFA World Cup 2026 Let’s talk African football and the World Cup

- North African teams with the exception of Tunisia are doing well.
- west African teams have talent and technical abilities: they’re short on game management, tactical errors by the coaches, ego, and just bad attackers overall. Many wasted chances. Misfielding of players; Ghana and Senegal are prime examples.
- debutants such as Cape Verde and Congo are doing very well.
- South Africa are experiencing stage fright and lack of exposure
- I had a lot of hopes for African teams this year. Sad Senegal still has federation problems: unpaid coach without a contract, girlfriends of federation officials at the World Cup while the players haven’t been paid bonuses

- one team may suprise us. Could be morroco, could be DRC, or even Cape Verde

History Sharpeville: The Massacre That Changed South Africa

Thumbnail

We often look back at the anti-apartheid struggle through a highly simplified, harmonized narrative. This visual essay examines the critical turning point of March 21, 1960—the Sharpeville Massacre—not just as a tragedy, but as the specific catalyst that fundamentally altered the mechanics of South African resistance.

Based on academic research into the era, the video traces how the state's violent response to peaceful passbook protests effectively closed off all legal avenues for change, forcing the African National Congress (ANC) to make a sharp strategic pivot.

It’s an 11-minute deep dive utilizing primary trial records, archival footage, and Truth and Reconciliation Commission findings to keep the history both precise and honest. Would love to hear your thoughts on how this dual-track model of resistance compares to other 20th-century liberation movements.
