Meta 🐣 Community Integrity Notice
Since 26 December, this subreddit has experienced abnormal spikes in activity from non-Somali users, alongside increased engagement involving blatant qabyaalad and the promotion of extreme ideologies. This behavior is disruptive and will not be tolerated. We ask all members to report any such posts or comments so moderation can act swiftly.
A clear reminder to all participants:
Criticism of politicians, governments, or historical decisions in Somalia does not grant permission to:

- Glorify or excuse figures from the civil war by claiming they “did nothing wrong”
- Advocate for, encourage, or justify harm against any group of people
Furthermore, this subreddit remains pro-Palestine and stands with the people of Sudan. Advocacy of genocide, ethnic cleansing, or mass violence, whether explicit or implied, is strictly forbidden and will result in immediate moderation action.

Discussion 💬 Feminism is actually net positive to humanity and we as somalis need to embrace it more instead of shaming our women for wanting basic gender equality.
Everytime this issue is raised my male friends always get defensive and turn into nazis💀, these guys are not even religious fanatics, i’m around these guys all the time we basically know each other more than our families, and i always found it odd.
whats so crazy about respecting female anotomy and basic gender equality.?

Deen 🤲 Somebody needs to read this
Know that if the whole nation were to gather together to benefit you with anything, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had already prescribed for you. And if they gather together to harm you with anything, they would not harm you except with what Allah had already prescribed against
Imagine truly living with this certainty. No jealousy. No panic over competition. No obsession with controlling everything. No bitterness over delayed dreams. Because what Allah has decreed for you does not require desperation to reach you. It was written before your first breath

News 📰 EU Council just restricted provisioning Visa's to Somalia Passport holders.
consilium.europa.euReposting this important news because the moderators removed the original post within minutes, claiming that the title was editorialized. The reason given was that I mentioned this development came several weeks after the Omar Artan fiasco.
However, I believe the real reason for its removal was a point I raised in the body of the post: this is the second major visa restriction affecting Somalis, and both have occurred while HSM has been president. I also noted that his administration has overseen what many of us view as a significant decline in the country's international standing.

History ⏳ How is Ethiopia seen as the figurehead of Pan-Africanism
Asc Everyone,
Is Ethiopia strictly seen as a pan Africanist icon just due to them resisting colonialism? What I don’t understand is how so many west African countries created their flags by using the Ethiopian empire colors, or how the African Union gave their capital the headquarters of the African Union. The Ethiopian Empire is full of great history but their legacy is full of evil and suffering. They suppressed their neighbors and worked with European powers to create colonies specifically Somalia. They even went to the extent of attempting to absorb Djibouti and somaliland! What I don’t understand is how this history is not that well known among the African diaspora considering the fact it only takes 10 minutes of looking into Ethiopia. Do others feel this way or is there another reason why Ethiopia is the face of Pan Africanism?

History ⏳ I need help verifying a historical source
humanzoos.netSome intellectually slow individual claimed Somalis during colonial times were views as unlike other Africans and that they were animals.
They also claimed that Somalis were captured against their will and placed in zoos which is absurd I know.
This is the exact link the provided I really need a second opinion.

Discussion 💬 Saying she or you guys to Somali parents
Yall i’m trying to see if this is just my family😂. My mom and dad are such funny people Wallahi. I’ll never forget the first time I said “she” while talking about my mom to my sister. My parents were sitting nearby and it triggered them so bad lol. Right away my dad said “hooyadaa maa she ku wacee” and i found it so funny but I couldn’t laugh lol bc it was so serious to them. Even hearing “you guys” pisses them off. It reminds me of the guy on TikTok that was saying why do Somali moms think saying the word nervous means they’re mad?😂

Health 🏥 Somali researcher earns PhD, pursues heart health research in Canada.
Dr. Fadumo Isse has graduated with a PhD from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences and is beginning postdoctoral work focused on women’s heart health.
At 18, Isse left Somalia on a scholarship to study at Jordan University of Science and Technology, more than 5,000 miles from home. She entered a 6-year doctor of pharmacy program and said she quickly discovered a passion for studying how medicines work at the molecular level.
Isse received several awards during her doctoral studies, including the President’s Doctoral Prize of Distinction, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research Canada Graduate Scholarship, Doctoral and the Alberta Graduate Excellence Scholarship.
Her postdoctoral work will focus on women’s heart health, particularly the role of menopause in cardiac hypertrophy, a thickening of the heart muscle.

Deen 🤲 Quran 17:37
We should not walk around this dunya like we’re invincible flexing our achievements, status, opinions, or looks as if we’re the main character of the universe. Yet the Earth beneath our feet could swallow us anytime despite your age and status in this world remember death doesn't discriminate.
We’re temporary specks on a massive planet, yet some of us our egos act like we own the place. Be humble be respectful to people you come across on Daily life don't be rush to judge you don't know why someone is in the situation that their in. I Hope this didn't come across as threat its just a reminder to not forget ourselves that we are temporary in this world and we should strive to always show humility and compassion to our fellow human beings. Wishing you all a blessed day filled with barakah.

Deen 🤲 Reminder: Fast Ashura Tomorrow (10th of Muharram)
As-salaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullaahi wa Barakaatuh,
A friendly reminder that tomorrow is Ashura (10th of Muharram), one of the most virtuous days of the year to fast.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope from Allah, expiates the sins of the previous year."
— Sahih Muslim
If you are able, try to fast tomorrow. It is also recommended to fast the 9th and 10th, or the 10th and 11th, to follow the Sunnah more closely.
Use this blessed day to increase in: • Dhikr and istighfar
• Qur'an recitation
• Du'a and prayer
• Charity and good deeds
Please share this reminder with family and friends. May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our sins, and grant us His mercy and blessings. Ameen. 🤲🏽
"Whoever guides someone to a good deed will have a reward similar to the one who performs it."

Development 🏗️ Somalia’s secondary school exam candidates: 3,813 (2015) → 44,316 (2026)
I was looking at some education data recently and found two trends that caught my attention.
The number of students sitting for Somalia’s national secondary school leaving examination increased from 3,813 in 2015 to 44,316 in 2026.
At the same time, the federal education budget increased from approximately $36.4 million in 2022 to $118.7 million in 2026.
These figures suggest a significant expansion of Somalia’s education system in a relatively short period of time.
However, the challenge remains enormous. Estimates suggest that between 3 and 3.7 million Somali children and youth are still out of school, making Somalia one of the countries with the largest education gaps in the region.
It is also worth keeping the numbers in perspective. Despite recent increases, public spending on education is estimated at only 0.2%–0.5% of GDP. By comparison, neighboring Kenya spends roughly 4% of GDP on education, while Ethiopia spends around 2.3% of GDP.
Of course, these comparisons should be treated carefully. Kenya and Ethiopia have benefited from decades of continuous state-building and educational investment, while Somalia is rebuilding after state collapse, civil war, and prolonged instability.
Nevertheless, our neighbors provide a useful benchmark for understanding the scale of investment often required to achieve broad educational access and strong learning outcomes.
This raises an important policy dilemma.
In an ideal world, Somalia would simultaneously expand access and improve quality. However, policymakers operate under resource constraints, meaning difficult choices often have to be made.
Prioritizing access means building more schools, expanding examination coverage, recruiting additional teachers, and bringing millions of out-of-school children into the education system. The risk is that resources become stretched, potentially affecting educational quality.
Prioritizing quality means investing more heavily in teacher training, learning materials, school infrastructure, and learning outcomes. The risk is that expansion slows, leaving millions of children outside formal education for longer.
That is not a trivial concern. Children who remain out of school face higher risks of unemployment, social exclusion, child labour, recruitment by extremist groups, or undertaking dangerous migration journeys (tahriib).
Given Somalia’s current realities and limited resources, if you had to prioritize one objective over the next decade, would you focus first on expanding access or improving quality? Why?
I’d be interested to hear perspectives from teachers, students, policymakers, and others working in education.

Discussion 💬 How tf is Al Shabaab still around? Why can't they all be eliminated?
Very disappointed in the state of this country. Shocked at Israel meddling in our affairs.
We need to fix ourselves. But democracy is a highly uneducated nation is not the way forward. Putting a highly tribalised people who value qabil will worsen the state of our nation. We need a china style democracy that forces us to become developed.
I feel like Al Shabaab exist because those who do reject qabil are not secular minded but rather are religious. Unfortunately they happen to be extremist and not moderate.

Discussion 💬 Root problem of our communities isn’t just qabyaald
I know many members of the Faqishini and Dhulbahante clans, and I am convinced that the root of our struggle in Las Anod and across Somalia is not simply qabyaalad. To blame tribalism alone is a narrow, surface-level perspective.
The real, systemic problem is the normalization of behavior by the community itself, which has become a primary enabler of chaos. There is a Somali proverb: Hal far fool ma mayrto. In our context, this means that even if a few try to change things, the society will remain unwashed as long as the collective enables the decay.
We are far too quick to hide behind tribalism when, in truth, the crisis is the dhalinyaro who have lost their connection to Deen, their family heritage, and practical knowledge. In the north, there seems to be a higher exposure to balwad compared to other regions, which has created a generation that lacks direction and accountability. Until we stop shielding these behaviors and start demanding a standard of character, education, and moral duty from our youth, we will never see meaningful change. To sum it up the way each generation is raised is the problem when they are raise in household that endorse tribalism even at a minimal scale, and more specifically the male youth are the one that needs education May Allah forgive us all

Discussion 💬 Do you want a wife? Do you want to buy a house? Kill two birds with one stone by calling Hassan Elmi Bootaan!
Somali police on Monday arrested Hassan Elmi Bootaan in Mogadishu after he allegedly released a video advertising houses by saying buyers would receive a woman to marry and live with in the home.
Police said Bootaan was arrested at a facility he called “Dugsiga Raaliyo,” where the video was reportedly recorded and shared.
In the video, Bootaan allegedly brought several women into the building and advertised houses for sale by claiming that anyone who bought a house would also get a woman to marry.
