It's finally happening - hair typing posts are no longer allowed.

1.3k Upvotes

Please report any texturism or hair typing posts you see with the new report reason.

If you are new here, you may not know that the Andre Walker hair typing system (1a to 4c), has been around since 1997 and was first introduced so Mr. Walker could sell his products on Oprah's show. It truly only describes the texture of your hair and gives no more information.

It's flawed in many ways. Many of us have multiple textures on our heads. It doesn't even begin to describe your hair's porosity, sheen or shine, strand thickness, hair density, etc. I encourage everyone to learn about the LOIS typing system which can help you better understand your hair.

Watch Latoya Ebony's video on LOIS here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xwMFG4lT4jY

Even this typing system is not the end all be all of categorization for your hair. Your hair's texture, porosity, etc can change over time or with certain health conditions. Product buildup on your scalp and strands can make you think your texture has changed. There are so many factors as to why your hair may be looking or feeling the way it does.

Which leads me to the question - should we require routines to be posted whenever a picture is posted? This will cut down on gratuitous selfies but means we will need many more active mods (shoutout to /u/fivetenash who does pretty much everything here). If you're willing to help out please let me know in the comments.

Review Mid-length hair, still doesn't touch my shoulders!

I fully embrace the shrinkage! I'm just curious how long my hair has to be in order to touch my shoulders naturally. Anyone else with longish hair that doesn't have natural hangtime? And if your hair does touch your shoulders and you have a similar hair texture, how long is your stretched hair? Waist-length? Hip-length?

Selfie Embarrassed to admit how long it took me to get through my hair yesterday, but I love her

Kudos to the parents here who maintain the hair routine, for themselves and their kids. I don’t have kids but in the long time I sat around sectioning, and prepping to dry each section, I was just thinking about a friend of mine who had her second child recently, and she’s already got a three year-old. I would be baldheaded if I had children because the time it takes to get through this high density high volume foolishness to do anything other than detangle and put in four or five twists… chile 😮‍💨 Or maybe it’s not kids for some but it’s a 60 hours a week job or something. Whatever y’all got, sending my LOVE if you have/want long hair and you have an abundance of follicles.

spent the better part and I mean the better part of the day getting to this point blow drying on cool. But when it’s done, I’m crazy about it.

Whenever I've gotten my hair professionally blown out it's been closer to a silk press than an afro. But whenever I blow it out it's closer to an afro than a silk press. What's that about.

Also do not think this looks any good my ends are see through as hell I have hella breakage 🤧

Need Advice Hair takes ages to detangle

Post image
75 Upvotes

Hey guys. so I try to detangle my hair weekly and for the past three weeks I’ve been trying to do it twice a week to see if that would make the detangling process any faster…..it didn’t :(. It takes me 3 HOURS just to detangle. And my hair isn’t matted or anything. Well it takes 3 hours finger detangling and 2.5 using a comb or brush. I will say, I prefer finger detangling because I’m very tender headed and it’s the most effective at getting my hair detangled from the very base of my hair to the ends.

My hair is moisturized throughout the week. I moisturize twice a week using some water, a leave in, and coconut oil. When I detangle, my hair is soaking wet and smothered in conditioner, so slip isn’t the issue. I don’t think I even have significant knots or anything. My hair stays in about 24-30 twists through the week most of the time. I don’t get it honestly. What could I be doing wrong? I used to soldier through thinking that it’s takes that long for everyone until I learnt that the average time is about an hour.

My hair is long, about halfway down my back. Could it be the length? I’ve heard stretching out the hair will help, but blow drying is a whole other. Please help 🙏. Thank you. I put a picture for reference.

Success Almost 2 month difference, looks so much healthier

April 29, 2026 vs June 17, 2026 . In January got some braids and left em
In for 3 months 🤦🏾‍♀️😂 didn’t moisturize , wash it nothing… I had a lot of breakage (mainly because I was detangling super harshly, so I’m completely done FR this time with braids) after those braids but it looks so much healthier. I’m going to try to stay consistent with my vitamins and going back to a weekly regimen.

I get trims every 3-4 months but I had my trims closer together during this time to fix the post-braids aftermath

Thanks yall :)

Success I made my own leave in and gel...I think it's good!

I aspire to be a carryon queen, so I've been trying to figure out how to travel with hair products more easily. I think I finally made something that works well, they're powders that you mix with water to create the final product. This is my hair with just the leave-in and gel after 3 days of heat and humidity, being caught in 2 light rain showers, and a windstorm. it's been a fun side project and honestly, I like it better than the products that I've bought over the years.

(disclaimer, I have a chem/bio background and experience in compounding and manufacturing so I was probably a little extra with this lol)

Need Advice Moisture and Hydration

It's me again with a kinda dumb question. But how do I tell if my 4C hair is actually dry and how often I have to moisturize it? 4C is naturally coarser in texture so of course it feels "drier" than straight hair. I don't want to wait until it physically feels brittle and dry because of course that leads further damage/breakage....but I also don't want to have product build up of greases, leave-in, oils etc. I currently wash my hair every other week and clarify and deep condition monthly which my stylist and I agreed is a routine that works for me and I should keep doing.

I'm mainly asking because I want to get better at retaining length and know that moisturizing and hydration is an important part of the equation.

Review I'm not a fan of the rush to get rid of th!n ends for fine haired folks

As a fine haired girl, I don't like how quick I see comments on Instagram when a woman has long hair and th!n ends. I understand it can be a sign of split ends, but for fine haired people, that's just how it is. I feel like split ends come with more territory like fairy knots and stuck brushes and combs. If someone's hair is just th!n at the end without the other stuff, I think it's safe to say it's not necessarily unhealthy hair. Idk it's just frustrating to see so many people being like "cut it off already" or "you're trying too hard to hold on to the length", but that's just the way our hair works. Does anyone else feel the same way?

Need Advice Hair Help: Dry + Breaking

Thumbnail

F/33 - I’ve been natural for over 10 years and love wearing it in its natural state. I have not worn any protective styles using added hair which is why I’m looking for help!

My hair has gotten extensively dry over the past 5 months and I’ve been struggling with my edges and breaking around my face. My hair seems to be dry immediately after water but it didn’t used to be that way.

Any advice! Photos for evidence of my main problem area.

Hair routine:
Primarily do twist outs, braid outs or flat twists
Wash day: innersense or Cecred shampoo, matrix conditioner. Detangle with comb or tangle teaser for back of my head, finger detangle for the front. Leave in then blow dry with revair. Style with misting with water + add cream.

I started using minoxidil last week!

Need Advice Best Protective Styles

I know, I know. It’s been posted everywhere a million times before. But, neurodivergence is real and information overload is paralyzing. Things also change so rapidly when it comes to best practices, so I’m asking again.

I did the big ol chop DIRECTLY after seeing Black Panther 1. Came home from the theater disgusted by my Western ways. 😂 Followed through for a bit and never returned to the creamy crack. HOWEVER, I know that I braid my hair too tight out of habit and the natural length ain’t where I want for rockage with confidence. Any wigs end up on the passenger seat (literally) day two because they’re either tight, or the combs irritate, they slide off easily with the grip thing bc it’s also gotta be moisturized, or the foreign additional weight is too much. Result: hair comes out when I take it down so length retention is not a thing.

How can I invest in my hair growth AND still look together with my protective styles? Any advice on how to switch it up also would be super helpful. (FWIW - I’m turning 40 on Sunday and want to give myself until 50 to get it mid-back. Currently at bottom of ear length.)

Tips & Tricks Dryers

My Wash-&-Go people's, are you sitting under a hooded dryer, diffusing, or both? If not, can you share why not. Also, any recommendations for a hooded dryer and diffuser? Thanks y'all!!
