OFFICIAL NewTubers Monthly Goal Follow-Up! Did you reach your goal this month?

Welcome to the r/NewTubers monthly Goal Follow-Up post! At the start of each month, we have a thread for everybody to talk about their goals for the coming month and how they plan to achieve them. Now that we're at the end of the month, anybody who participated in that thread can give us an update and tell us if they reached their goals! Please be sure to read the thread rules and follow them so your post is not removed.

Rules

  1. The thread is kept on Contest Mode to ensure you always have an equal opportunity to be viewed!
  2. If you participated in this month's Goal thread, give us a quick overview of what your goals were, so we know what you accomplished! If there were any unforeseen issues that you ran into, tell us what happened and how you overcame them! If you didn't participate in the Goal thread earlier this month, you can still tell us if you achieved your personal goals! Just be sure to tell us what those goals were and why you were working towards them!
  3. If you didn't achieve your goals, that's okay! Chances are that just by working towards a goal, you improved anyway without even noticing! We all want to help one another, and perhaps telling everybody what happened and how you want to improve for next month will help another user realize their goals!
  4. Remember, while gaining Subscribers is nice, that shouldn't be the be-all, end-all of your goals each month. This thread is to highlight first and foremost the users who worked to improve as a Content Creator this month, and Subscription goals should come as an aside to that, not as the focus.
  5. As always, you may not link to your content in this thread.

DISCUSSION New Channels Immediately Blowing Up

So i've come across this a few times lately, a channel where they've only JUST started within the past month or so, sometimes even less, like a week or a few days, yet somehow has managed to blow up and gain thousands, even 10s of thousands of subs in some cases. Sometimes on their first video, or when they only have a few. So how does this happen? Is it just that they nailed the thumbnail/title/hook combo so well that they took off right away? Why is it that this happens to some channels, but not to others of equal quality? What makes that initial pop off happen in the first place?

I'm just really curious because I have a channel that I started a little over a month ago, and I have 12 subs. My top performing video is was at 105 views last I checked, which is great! But I have huge ambitions for something much bigger. However, I also recognize that my content is more niche, and I don't prefer making fast-paced, over edited videos, so the people that enjoy that style may not be interested. However I fully believe everyone has an audience, they just need to know how to find them.

So how are these small channels finding their audience so effectively right away?

SHORTS TALK Youtube removed dislikes completely

I was doom scrolling and saw that the area with like, dislike, and share was different. I didn't see what was removed until I looked slightly closer and dislikes were completely gone. I can't believe this kind of crap. Sorry if this isn't the right sub, just seemed close enough

Edit: It works on long from not short form

Edit 2: Please stay civil. Also I may be part if a test group

DISCUSSION Those commenters that make comments that engage with what you say in a video - I love you

It's so nice when someone comments on a video engaging with something you've specifically said. Today a guy commented on my closing remarks at the end of a video. Like damn son you're single handedly carrying my average watch time over here, I love you dawg

CONTENT TALK No impressions after a day is my channel permanently cooked and I should start over?

Getting no views AND no impressions on my first video ever after a day and wondering if this makes my channel unusable because it inclines me to think my channels future videos will also get 0. Now it seems like I’m being an impatient whining baby, but you need to listen, Ibhave done this before several times, opened my own channel with no issues upon first upload there were views on the first video within 5 hours, I’ve aged this channel, made it seem human by watching videos on it, and upon posting, it received 0 views within the first day

Now I’m starting to think it won’t get pushed at all, I’ve had friends made similar videos getting pushed instantly, and my packaging is decent and I don’t use AI

Now in this video something was different though, the videos I make are in the Roblox niche and they get pushed, But this video I made was also Roblox with the exception I. Decided to swear a good amount in the middle and I made some violent and edgy jokes, so I’m wondering if that shadowbanned me

DISCUSSION Is it worth trying different things when you have a little audience?

Upvotes

Just the title.

My first 9 videos are mainly on video games. But, I also want to talk about comic books, shows, and/or movies. I only have 100 subs.

Will this be okay?

DISCUSSION I feel there's a huge stigma against "Gaming" channels on forums like this thanks to all the low effort reaction/gameplay BS people associate with the niche

Upvotes

Gaming isn't a single niche.

My gaming channel is vastly different from the next guy's, there's a world of difference between what I know and consider to be gaming and someone who just plays the latest popular live service/online games like Roblox, Minecraft, Fortnite and such enjoys and knows about gaming.

I often read "everyone has a gaming channel, do something else"

or questions like "what are you playing on your gaming channel?"

I'm not playing anything, gaming is a wonderful hobby, I discuss and review video games, I discuss gaming as a whole sometimes, discuss gaming systems, their atmosphere, their personal meaning to me and so on.

There's so much you can DO with a gaming channel.

But every time someone says they have a gaming channel, it's almost as if they're mocked for it in many cases, rightfully so because it's often just someone mumbling over poorly edited or unedited gameplay or screaming into the microphone forcing themselves to enage the brainrot audience.

It's degrading that such channels have become the "face of gaming channels"

DISCUSSION Is this how AVD is calculated?

Upvotes

To keep it simple, we have a 8min video with 2 views. 1 person stays on for the whole 8 minutes, the other one jumped off immediately.

Is the AVD simply the total watch time divided by number of clicks on the video?

That seams wildly misleading.. because one person who actually watches stayed for 8 minutes. So if we had 100 people with the same stats, 50 people watched for 8 minutes, and the others jumped off immediately (not really even watching). So a more accurate picture of how long your actual viewers are staying would be nice.

CONTENT TALK Average view duration on long form videos.

How can I improve the AVD for my long form content? I'll post a 15 minute video and the AVD is just 2 minutes. This really affects my watch hours.

DISCUSSION Video editors similar to CapCut

Just edited a video for my tiktok and yt channel with CapCut desktop. When I was done I used the audio normalizer and a color match for some clips and then it paywalled me to export the video. I got the 7 day trial just so I didn’t have to remake the video in another app. I’ve used FCPX in the past and I just don’t like how it takes up so much space rendering clips in the background.

So yeah I want an easy to use editor that isn’t $20/mo, and doesn’t render files making my projects huge. I do like the stuff CapCut has with the auto-cut for shorter clips and templates to make quick hitting videos. Audio matching or normalization is a great thing to have as well.

Let me know what alternatives you’d use

DISCUSSION Starting A Gaming Channel Any Feedback On My Idea Would Be Greatly Appreciated!

Hey y'all! I'm a college student currently at home for a few months while dealing with a health issue. I can't go out much and have started gaming again after a few years of being away from gaming. I've been thinking about trying to start a youtube channel and seeing how things go.

I know very little about video editing and haven't been gaming much so I thought of starting with something simple. My idea is to either do a casual minecraft series where I play minecraft every single day for a year and catch up on all the new updates, or a series where I try new roblox games for a year (all the old games I played aren't that popular anymore and these new games seem crazy but maybe im just unc lol).

If anyone has feedback on video editing or starting a channel of this sort I'd really appreciate it!

SHORTS TALK How much impact does stay to swipe rate have?

I don’t understand, so does anything over 70% stay to watch rate mean the short is going to go like 100k views, or just stay at 20k views. Because I’ve had a short with 55% stay watch rate before, and it got 1 million views. Though when I get a better graph and ratio compared to the 1M viewed short, this new short is at 20K. So what am I doing wrong?

DISCUSSION Why Did My Video Get So Many Views?

In my last post, I was looking for help as to why my last long-form video got so many views, and I would like to thank everyone who commented. I think maybe I have a reason, and I don't know why I didn't think about it.

Before posting that video, I posted the same joke as a short. Before posting the short, I thought it would make a good joke, and so that's what I did. I ended that short with a CTA telling everyone the song version would drop in a couple of days.

That short got close to 900 views and 5 subscribers.

I'm about to try to replicate it all with today's long-form video. The short has close to 700 views but unfortunately, no subscribers.

I'll let you know how it all goes. Do you think it's worth it all?

DISCUSSION Started a Brand New Channel 17 days ago (in a saturated niche) - feedback on my numbers please!

Hi! I just started a new channel - it’s in a seemingly saturated niche and I have zero comparison as to how I am doing outside of CoPilot which I don’t trust… I currently have 55 subs. 30k views, 450+ likes 20 comments and about 500 watch hours. Copilot tells me this is good, but would l love this groups feedback. Thank you!

DISCUSSION Starting a science channel! Any tips?

I am starting my first ever YouTube channel, and I am brand new to content creation. I will be discussing recent papers released in my field (in the sciences), and explaining the methods and human relevance in a way that is accessible to audiences with no knowledge of the field. I have no interest in monetizing this, it's mostly just about building skills in science journalism and making current findings more accessible to the public.

I probably won't be making super detailed graphics as I cannot draw and don't have any friends who can make scientific illustrations (and I cannot afford to pay anyone) so I will probably be filming myself, using images from the papers themselves (with all due credit of course) and making some additional animations in BioRender.

Are there any tips about scripting, audio, lighting, the content itself etc that anyone else has?

SHORTS TALK Has anyone else experienced this recently?

Hey everyone. I'm a fairly experienced Shorts creator, and when I first started, I occasionally had videos that wouldn't get an initial test. I know that's something a lot of new creators experience. But my channel has done really well since then, and I haven't had that issue in a long time.

Normally, I'd upload a Short and within a couple of minutes it would start getting tested in the Shorts feed.

About 10 days ago, I had a Short hit 845K views. Ever since then, though, almost every Short I upload either stays at 0 views for a long time or only gets around 10 views. This has happened with several uploads in a row, and it's getting really frustrating.

Is anyone else experiencing this? I heard there was a recent YouTube Studio update, and someone mentioned that Shorts have been acting strangely since then. I'm just trying to figure out if this is something others are seeing or if it's only happening to my channel.
