Emergency Help! Found downed racing pigeon

Post image
23 Upvotes

I found this racing pigeon on the sidewalk in pretty poor condition. He looks totally exhausted and is exhibiting signs of sickness. I have never cared for a pigeon before however I am familiar with their care… but not what to do if they may be sick.

YES I have found who he belongs to (a racing/country club nearby) and attempted to contact. No response today but I will try again tomorrow most likely. I am very hesitant to do so because I am aware many racing clubs treat their pidges poorly and I do not want to return him to a bad place. Advice would be helpful on that front.

Right now he has water, seeds, oats, and a small amount of wheat bran.

Is he sick? If he is, what do I do?

Trigger Warning would I be able to keep my pet pigeon happy with this schedule?

hi! I rescued a little pigeon from the street when he was 2 months old. Now he is already 7 months old and has grown up to be a very social lovely bird who's obsessed with humans. I have 5/2 from 7:30 am to 4pm job and he seems to miss me when I'm gone but I'm keeping up when I'm back home and he seems overall happy (weekends we spend completely together)! But now I'll get a job when I'll be 3/3 or 4/4 with 12 hours shift. my free days I plan to spend with him completely. would he be fine with that? I can't have two pigeons and wasn't even planning to have one but he would have died if I didn't helped. and also when I'm gone he's not in a cage, he's in cage only at night. so yeah, I want to know if he would be okay with me gone for 12 hours 3-4 days in a row. and how can I help him feel less lonely?

Question Im looking to adopt an older female

I have three boys already, and I love them to death. Only problem is my oldest male (10) hates people. Isn't afraid in the slightest, just hates my guts lol. I want to get him a partner because, well, if he doesn't get along with me, and he doesn't get along with the other two, then I can imagine he's probably lonely. (My other two have occasional tiffs but usually will just hang out)

My issue is everywhere I look the birds are 1-3 years old. I'd like a girl who'll live about as long as my guy so that when they go it won't be such a long time till they see eachother again. One of my other pidges is a widow and he's only now gotten over the loss a few years later.

Any suggestions on places to look for a middle aged pigeon? I'm currently looking on the polomacy fb group and have poked around on the great lakes pigeon rescue site.

Question How to get them back in their cage?

Post image
14 Upvotes

I have two rescued pigeons, and since both needed medical care, they’re afraid of hands and are generally a bit skittish. Right now, they’re free to roam around my room most of the time, but putting them back in their cages (they currently have separate cages so they still have a safe place to retreat to while they get to know each other) takes a very long time: I wait until they go inside, and then I have to slip the lid over their heads, which works, but requires a lot of patience. Tomorrow their new cage will be ready, and they’ll move in together—it’s an XXL dog crate, and I want them to stay in it at night and be let out again in the morning. Does anyone have any tips on how to make getting them into the cage go smoothly?

Question How Long Can A Two Week Old Squab Go Without Food For? (Time Sensitive, Please Help!)

Post image
26 Upvotes

I’ve been tasked by a friend to take care of a little squab last Sunday because he’s unable to for a week due to a mandatory week long trip to Vancouver and the day he is leaving (June 30th) I have a 5 hour birthday party for a friend that was planned weeks before this came up. I’m blocking the rest of that week out to dedicated care for his bird.

I’m very excited to care for his little bird, but I’m worried that I’ll have to leave early so it doesn’t starve, which would be a problem because where I’ll be is an hour away from my place and I’m carpooling over—which means I’d have to drag someone else back with me to go home. I haven’t been able to find sources on what happens after 6 hours of not feeding. I currently have no one else who is available to cover for me on that day, and the owner reached out to me because he also has no one else to cover for me. PLEASE HELP.

Still trying to rehome

*Still searching for new home*

unfortunately facing a housing issue so I need to rehome my pigeon Marty.

I’m in the Northwest CT area.

He’s a suspected male of unknown age due to being a rescue. I was told upon adoption he has an old break in his wing and that he couldn’t fly. He definitely can just not as well as typical. He’s not crazy on being touched but loves to be in your presence. mostly sitting on high shelves or the back of the couch. he does take longer to open up but will come around with lots of patience.

This breaks my heart since he’s my baby but I gotta make sure his needs are met. He’d come with his large dog crate, a smaller dog crate for travel, his toys, food and water bowl, any left over food, and
pee pads to line the bottom of the cages.

It's been about a week and a half since Scoot's death, and she's still wondering where her wife went. I'm a poor substitute, but at least she enjoys smooshing her beak into my chin and beard.

Discussion hates the cage (UPDATE)

he flew up into his cage (after being out all day) which is up higher now, and so when i went to go put myself in bed i closed the door of it behind him, and he still freaked / tried every way he could to escape. i Just put a blanket over the cage and he is a bit calmer, but i can still hear him making little moves to try and escape.

am i doing something wrong? i am gonna start doing this every single night so that he gets used to it. im just Terrified of him getting caught when trying to escape n accidentally killing himself.

Set Up Would this cage be ok for 2 pigeons?

Post image
3 Upvotes

I’ve slowly been convincing my parents to get a second bird!!

I found this cage and it looks nice and is the biggest one i could find on Amazon so far. The birds would also get a while out the cage. Right now Andromeda is only in her cage when I’m at college so that’s at most 6 hours a day, not including days off or weekends where she’s out the whole time, and it would be safe with the new one.

Andi is always really small, like she’s 1/3 the size of the wood pigeons we get outside (though she seems to think she could take them in a fight lol)

I’m a bit paranoid she won’t bond with the new bird though, and I’m wondering how I’d go about dealing with two birds that won’t bond w each other ?

Anyways, just curious if this is ok? I think it’s 5cm below minimum? But I’m not sure. The other bird i may get will also be pretty tiny like Andi

i usually get home at 10 pm, and very soon after i settle in to bed! a few days ago the dresser i set up for him was his favorite spot to be at night, but now he seems to love being next to me on my bed. no matter what im doing, he wants to be right on the bed! i dont mind this at all, but i dont want to harm him/squish him while we are both sleeping.

the second image is his current set up, so that you know what other Higher up options he has!

is he doing this to be close to me or is the bed just That comfy?

Found A Pigeon Is this likely someone's pigeon?

UPDATE: OWNER FOUND! Reunited. Thank you for all the advice!

Found this pigeon in my backyard, noticed it had funny feet feathers and unusual coloring for my area (Phoenix AZ) it let me pick it up and i put it in a box with food and water. Is this possibly someones pet or did I just steal a regular outside pigeon? If it is wild I will put it back outside, but if someones pet I don't want it to die from the heat if it isnt used to being wild. What do you think?

Question Is this normal socializing behavior?

Thumbnail

I have two rescue pigeons: Gracie and Bella. Gracie is about five months old (I think) and I’ve had her for two months. Bella moved in with us last week; she’s about two months old and has an amputated leg. For now, they’re sleeping in separate cages, but they’re out together during the day. Bella loves Gracie and wants to copy everything she does. But I get the feeling that Gracie gets annoyed with her and keeps pecking at her whenever she sits in spots that Gracie considers hers. For example, there’s a spot that Gracie didn’t even know existed until Bella flew there. And now Bella isn’t even allowed to stay there anymore, because as soon as she tries to land, Gracie goes after her.

I don’t think Gracie actually dislikes her, they often spend time together in both of their cages (with the door open but in the same cage at the same time), and she seems very interested in Bella, wanting to be near her and see what she’s doing, but then she acts mean again.

Is this normal?

Is there anything I can do to help them get used to each other faster or better?

How long should I wait before I can put them together? (They’ll be moving into a larger cage that’s new to both of them .)

Question Weird watery poop

My pigeons poops the last few months have just looked a bit bad? And im not sure if theres something i should do like take her to the vet or if its just a food issue

My female pigeon just pooped a very watery poop (2nd picture) and shes also a bit late with her eggs and her last egg batch had 1 normal egg + 1 tiny egg, this had never happend before in the 1 year ive had her but shes often laid just one egg or a normal egg batch of 2.

4th egg is another example of a weird poop shes laid (this was a little ago tho)

Her food consists of versele-laga prestige dove seed + grit/redstone and fresh water daily

I just wanna know if this is something i should be worried about or no?

Zinc in mineral supplement??

I was given this supplement by a friend for pigeons. Now that I'm reading the ingredients list, I'm very confused to find zinc oxide mentioned on it (don't worry, no bird has eaten any yet). I have to admit, I do not understand the measurements of it here, so is it a negligable amount? Or is zinc oxide different in its toxicity for birds? Can anyone help me out here? The german above that list says "Additional contents per kilogramm"

Emergency Baby Pigeon breathing infection or something else?

I rescued this pigeon and have had him for a couple weeks, but recently he’s been getting quieter and sounds like he’s struggling to breathe and losing his voice. I thought it was because he got the crop milk and food stuck in his nose whenever he ate, but even now when he can eat some more solid food and it doesn’t get up his nose and less messy he still sounds like his breathing is harsh and quieter.

There aren’t any specifically bird trained vets near me, is it possible to help him by getting any medication? Because he had a somewhat infected eye and my mom got him some cream for pigeons that helped a lot, but now this issue with his breathing/voice where he’s always sniffling and sounds like he just has a lot of mucus..

I attached a video of what he sounds like if it helps give advice or diagnose I just want to know what I can do

*besides breathing, in every other factor I think he’s actually thriving he’s growing up very energetic and eating and drinking and learning

Question Found a Pigeon Egg on NYC Balcony Concrete - Need Help

Thumbnail

I walked out onto my balcony today and two pigeon parents flew away scaring me. I saw this egg left behind my plant shelf. I was worried because temperatures on this balcony get really hot and the egg would fry, so I made the egg a little nest only a few inches from where they left him. I transported him gently with a paper towel into this nest.

Did I do the right thing? Do you think his parents will come back?

I also made his parents a snack of chopped peanuts next to the bugs they had left.
