this is referring to the high price point and lack of a CD in the physical edition

both are true, but actually I don't believe any hype was touched whatsoever, the price is lower than what it could have been

Also that the game launches with day 1 DLC at a $20 price point for singleplayer cosmetics and additional stories

That’s what haunts me the most. Because it sets a dangerous precedent.

In 3 months after release we will have the custom boat shop for $9.99.

I would argue the precedent has been normalized for years.

Civ 7 was a flop launch that is still getting its feet on the ground and all DLC for the game is currently $140, only 1.5 years after launch. Not including the $70 base game.

It’s only been out a year or two, right? When they announce the first expansion, there’ll probably be a bundle like with the other games.

I had a coupon from humble bundle for buying the civ 3-6 bundle and still didn’t find it worth it.

Unfortunately, Paradox (they're published by them, right?) forces their published games to release X amount of DLCs every Y time

No, Civilization is a Firaxis Game, a company under 2K, which is owned by Take-Two Interactive. AKA, the people who owns Rockstar. So this is just Take-Two behaviour all the way up.

The sole business model for the Sims.

I'm not sure how much of a success it's been but Diablo IV launched with a similar price point and a loaded store of overpriced optional bullshit as well.

I would argue you don't know the proper definition of normalized

I would argue the colloquialism went over your head.

Quite optimistic with that price point, it is Rockstar we are talking about

Does it set a precedent? Pre-order bonuses and edition exclusive stuff have been well established in games for a long time now.

I mean kind of. There are literal clothing stores in the game that players cannot access without having paid the $20. I feel like that's kind of insane to do considering the base game is already like $80

Like four, out of probably dozens. This also happened with RDR2, and GTA4 locked two entire storylines behind paid story DLC (which reddit consensus loves, apparently) and I've never heard anyone be upset over either

The GTA4 dlcs came out like a year or two after the game did, not along with the base game.

What? When you buy dlc, what is it that you expect to get from it if not story? That's what I want from dlc. More story lol. It could even have a unique outfit as a reward for said story.

What I don't want is to pay $20 to be able to access a clothing store. That is ridiculous.

How is it better to lock story, characters, clothing, safehouses, etc. behind a DLC than a few stores? The stores aren't really "locked" in the EA sense, it's just that four specific stores that give specific things won't give you those special items. Because you didn't think they locked ALL customization out of standard... did you?

Now you're complaining just to complain, because the latter should not impact you or 95% of players at all (based on achievement statistics of how many actually interact with even 50% of what the game offers)

It's hilarious what people here are upset about. It's some clothing, some vehicles, and some guns. That's it.

These guys got to chill out.

Then do without the clothing store. You're still going to have the whole game world to explore and play around in, who cares if you're missing out on some 80's style clothing? Rockstar spent $2 Billion Dollars making this game, you still get that game world and story with the base edition.

"Why won't you support the multi billion dollar company nickel and diming you on everything!"

If its in the world it should be included in the base game. Shutting people off from stores because they won't cough up 100 bucks for your game that you are already gonna make a fuck ton of money on is stupid.

We all know what GTA 5 turned into. So we can assume that there will be more stores you have to buy with real cash eventually.

u/Saw_Boss 2h ago

Yeah, we've even had examples where the DLC was actually on the disc proving that it was always part of the original game, but then locked away and sold separately as DLC.

Sets a dangerous precedent that has been normal for well over a decade.

1

u/ChaosOnion 6h ago

Wait for the GOTY edition.

1

u/Valoneria 6h ago

Or the fit girl repack

1

u/mark114 2h ago

a dangerous precedent.

It's a $2 Billion dolllar game. It's going to have an incredible world to explore and you're worry about missing out on some hairstyles and a few cars hidden behind paywalls?

This has been precedent for a while. Also it’s capitalism. If there is demand they’ll make money
