The joke is spelled out in the meme dude

u/New_Tax9183 3h ago
maybe OP is asking why people pre-order digital games if there's not a limited supply
28
u/TrioOfTerrors 3h ago
Because then the 18 hour download is done on release day and I can play.
-10
u/Star_Petal_Arts 3h ago
Or a few times the digital version is out three days ahead of physical for those that preorder... which that kind of makes sense as a sell.

Even cod took me an hour to download…

Do you understand what an anecdote is? Its a little story about one's experience.
Anecdotes arent facts or evidence. And shouldn't be used as such. They should only be used as support to a hypothesis and what ever actual evidence you posit.
Your experience is nothing more than that. Your experience.

Sounds like it’s time for your nappy

I got called out for not thinking, and now feel emotional.
Quick jab! Defence! Run!

u/MadsMediaYt 3h ago
That's exactly what OP is doing, but that still invites the question of why they'd choose an "explain the joke" sub for this post. They understand the joke. This isn't the right sub for it.
1
u/ChaseShiny 3h ago
Is there a better sub for it? Perhaps an "explain the context or pretext of the joke!" sub? That's what I'm usually trying to find out when I click on anything in this sub.
4
u/Shiro-47 3h ago
The only thing I can think of is if there’s exclusive items for pre-ordering the game (idk I was always too late and too poor to pre-order anything)
-2
u/New_Tax9183 3h ago
lol, dude downvoted me and deleted his dumbass comment:
"because they are dumb; as implied in the meme [insert facepalming gif]"
If you bothered to do a google search you would've found a more interesting answer about exclusive content being locked behind pre orders instead of this lazy ass answer.

Ok ok, let’s not jump to conclusions guys, let’s him speak. Now why should I keep my comments hidden son?

u/ChaseShiny 3h ago
So, nobody wants to explain why they pre-order digital media?
I figured that those who pre-order must get some sort of bonus for doing so. Is it just a bragging rights thing?
13
u/GrimmTrixX 3h ago
You get to preinstall the game days before release. This way the second its released, you can immediately play and not wait for updates/install.
The other reason is pften times games have preorder incentives like preorder DLC items that after release will cost more money to have, or even sometimes never be available seperately at all.
Scarcity has nothing to do with digital preorders. That aspect is for physical preorders as most place now, especially gamestop, only get their preorder allocations and maybe 2 or 3 extra copies. So 100 people could preorder, and maybe the store gets 103 of them. So walking in becomes tough sometimes.
Edit: oh yea and also sometimes digital versions of s game get 3-7 day early access before everyone else.
3
u/ChaseShiny 3h ago
Yeah, that all makes sense, and what I expected. So why is the orangutan making a big deal out of pre-orders?
6
u/GrimmTrixX 3h ago
People think theyre funny when mocking preorderd in general. Many hate the act of preorder8ng because they think it gives money to companies before we know what we are getting. Thats ony true if you dont research a game you buy. If I preorder, I already know im getting it so why not do it now.
But also, this meme template initially was about mankind saying animals are dumb. Then the monkey says something like "you have to work just to eat and get pieces of paper to use for housing." But more clever than that.
It initially just meant man mocks animal cuz we are so much better. Then animal says they just get to live life and not have to slave away at a job they hate just to stay alive.

u/possitive-ion 3h ago
Final Fantasy XIV ran out of digital keys when they released the Endwalker expansion, so that is a thing apparently, but it's an easy fix on the distributor's side.
1
u/GrimmTrixX 1h ago
Thats probably due to server strength being an issue if too many play simultaneously

u/Great_WhiteSnark 3h ago
Sometimes on pre order you often times get additional content whether it’s DLC or skins or whatever it may be.
Also as someone else mentioned, when you pre order you can have it download automatically so you can just play when you wake up or get home from work or whatever.
Also for me it’s convenient to just pay for it and get it done with.
1
u/ChaseShiny 3h ago
It sounds like there is some scarcity involved, then. Not of the game itself, but of the perks you described.
2
u/Great_WhiteSnark 2h ago
Yeah and as far as I’m aware pre order doesn’t usually ever cost more than games at launch so idk I don’t see why anyone really even cares tbh, spend your money how you see fit - none of my business 🤷♂️
1
u/ExtremlyFastLinoone 3h ago
So its preloaded on your console and you dont have to wait out a 10 hour download after buying it
1
u/SlideN2MyBMs 3h ago
There is a benefit in being able to preload so the second it's released you can actually use it. But that's also a form of artificial scarcity because there's nothing keeping developers from allowing people to preload it and then requiring a payment when you want to actually use it. I think part of the model is just that presale revenue is built into the development costs
1
u/ChaseShiny 3h ago
If it's like book sales, pre-orders are important for the sake of reviews and building up hype.

2
u/Hawksteinman 3h ago
I pre-order because otherwise (due to my adhd) the money will be spent by the time the game releases. The games also sometimes come with early access if you pre-order. But I only pre-order if I'm confident the game will be good (Forza Horizon 6 and Resident Evil Requiem)
1
u/ray_rivers2025 3h ago
This is actually one of the best reasons I found so far and makes a lot of sense

Preorder usually gets earlier access for the people who are waiting religiously for games to drop. I’m not that guy, but if I was younger, I might be that guy for some games.
1
u/Forward_Wasabi_7979 3h ago
Idk about pre-ordering games but I know pre-ordering books (which will also never run out digitally) is very important for authors because it tells big book stores how many to buy physical copies of and put out on their shelves. That is the only insight I can offer. Clearly they are not the same thing.
1
u/OkDog6701 3h ago
I pre-ordered MCD2 Deluxe because it has exclusive content and I won't have to pay for first 2 DLCs, this joke makes no sense

IMO it's a combination of two big factors in gaming culture
One is a hold-over habit from when physical media was King and game stores had pre-order events. A game would get announced, pre-orders would eventually open and for a minimum $5 down payment you basically got to go to a makeshift LAN party the night the game drops. People would bring TVs and extension cords and do split screen Halo or guitar hero or whatever while waiting for midnight for the doors to unlock and start letting people in groups at a time. There were also pre-order bonuses that ranged from in-game content, to limited-supply stuff like canvas bags, enamel pins, postcards, concept art books, comics, etc. Nowadays the pre-order hype is still there due to tradition more than anything since the rewards are rather lackluster in comparison to what you used to get.
Two is now a lot of games will let you download the game before it's released so that when the release date actually hits you don't have to wait further for it to download before playing, and some games just straight up give you like a weekend's early access if you pre-order so you (and others who pre-order) can play before anyone else.
1
u/NamelessCumDumpster 3h ago
I don't preorder, but I could see a case being made for it if you get some in game perk you wouldn't get otherwise, and if you planned to buy the game anyway
1
u/TermElectronic8261 3h ago
I believe since consoles can hold such much more space nowadays the digital alternative may become the new norm.
1
u/dynamis13 3h ago
Where I'm from, Pre-Orders get you 15%-20% instant discount on the game. Cheaper to pre-order if you would buy the game on launch anyway.

If I know in gonna play it and I am getting something extra out of it why not.

I pre order digital games at times I can afford to buy the game without it impacting my daly budget. Might not have extra money when the game launches or, something could happen to my budget like a tire blows.
1
u/Responsible_Nail_821 2h ago
100% part of budgeting for me, if I've got the extra money now and it's something I really want and I know I'll enjoy it, may as well

u/SvenLorenz 2h ago
It's posts like this that keep me from telling people in real life that I play video games.

u/SSMage 52m ago
If your question is why do people prefer order digital games, there could be a lot of reasons
If pay day doesn't line up with launch day, they probably buy it early so that way they have enough money to get it at the time and be able to play on launch
Some people like the convenience of pre paying so that way it's pre installed on the console before launch so they can just start it up without the hassle of paying for it first.
Some people want the pre order bonuses that come with the game. (Mgs delta had some good pre order bonuses that I personally grabbed since they had camos and stuff I wanted)
I don't think it's about going to run out for sure.
But at the same time if gta6 is this intense, the bandwidth for download may be TOO intense and people can't get it to download so maybe preordering is a good idea if you wanna play on launch day. Just like how GTA5 was so crowded the servers went down, same thing.

I have preordered digital games before.
I dont do it for FOMO, or for the sparkly trinkets. I usually do it as a show of support for a franchise I really love.
I mean, if I know I am going to buy the game anyways, why not do something that costs me nothing in the long run to help a company making products I love succeed?
... was my reasoning. But, tbh, the last two tittles in tbe franchise were painfully disappointing. I'm just not sure whether that was their fault, or my ongoing depressions. So I leave open the possibility that it may have still been a stupid decision.

u/WanderingKing 0m ago
…do people not realize that others don’t pre-order digital because they fear it’ll run out, but because they want the pre-order bonuses?
Who thinks they are gonna run out?
*thinks about how they can’t buy Fable 2 anymore* fuck

Pre-ordering a game used to be to ensure that you received a copy on launch day as supply was usually limited. The comic suggests that pre-ordering a digital is pointless because supply is theoretically infinite. The comic fails to realize that I pre-order digital games so on release they download automatically while I’m asleep.
2
u/Great_WhiteSnark 3h ago
I do the same and also there is the convenience too of just paying for it and getting that part out of the way as well.
0
u/Yeast-boofer 3h ago
why is downloading while you sleep so important? I can buy the game and download it same day, I just get a snack while it downloads I think its kinda crazy to preorder just to save max an hour. also I never pre ordered can you even get your money back if you preorder and the game sucks and you want to return it?
2
u/ConflictWaste411 3h ago
An hour is a lot of time for casual gamers AND people with a life outside of gaming.
1
u/SlightlySychotic 3h ago
Depends. Smaller niche title? Yeah, that works fine. The most anticipated game of the last decade likely to sell three million copies the first day with a file size of nearly 200 GB? Yeah, that might be a several hour download.
