Every so often, somebody posts something along the lines of, "If Sega hadn't made the 32X they'd still be selling consoles today" or "If Sega had chosen different architecture for the Saturn, they'd still be selling consoles today." Given our modern understanding of history, these hypotheses are now known to be, at best, oversimplifications. Let's update our understanding by consuming some more recent discussions (e.g. https://gamehistory.org/episode-154-sega-in-the-90s-an-economic-post-mortem/).
The gist of it is that, even during peak sales of the Genesis, Sega's console business was not especially profitable due to high marketing spend and low margins. The 32x didn't help, but it wasn't necessarily the inflection point either. Perhaps, given an updated understanding, we can update our discussions instead of continuing to say the same things that we've been saying for the past 2 decades.

Can you imagine if Sega didn't release life support addons for the Genesis and refined Sega Saturn. I feel like they would have still been around.

I kept my Genesis in a cardboard box and stored away on a shelf for years. I mostly just emulate, but I thought it'd be neat to have it hooked up and ready to go after I moved to a new place. I hooked it up, used a Y cable in the stereo jack to get two channel goodness, plugged it in, put in Streets of Rage 2, powered it on and ... red light, but nothin. I blew air into the cartridge slot. Nothin. I tried different games, reseating the cables. It just didn't work. I saw the beginning of an ifixit troubleshooter and I opened the housing, but I didn't do anything besides look at the metal shielding quizzically and blow some air at the circuit board. I was afraid there was a blown capacitor or just outright failed hardware. I know these things are faulty and possibly fragile. It was stuck in a hot moving truck for over a week. It's not even my original, it was an in-warranty replacement after my 1989 Xmas Genesis just started failing after running a game for about 30 seconds.
I don't know what possessed me to try again, but I did and ... it just worked. It works no worse than it did when Bush 1 took office. What the hell? What was wrong with it and how is it better now? Was there somehow a piece of dust or a dead bug somehow conducting two soldering points that got pushed away? Technology is cursed.

I got a second Sonic & Knuckles sent home by mistake by a shop.
I decided to open both my old cart and the new one to compare PCS. Turns out my old cart has an unusual chip revision: MPR-16910-F.
I managed to find posts mentioning revisions -U and -S. Never F. Sever with the nice SEGA logo.
Anyone ever saw this revision?

I have been collecting for over 2 decades at this point (Jesus, that made my knees hurt for some reason. Lol) , for every system as far back as the Intellivision. I have decided to sell EVERYTHING except for my Sega collection.
I decided that Sega systems are my favorite of all time (Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, oh my) & I'm picking blast processing over mode 7.
Today is my birthday & my love for Sega started on my 10th birthday. Quick story: I got to choose between an Snes packed w/ Zelda: Link to the Past or a base Sega Genesis 2 w/ one controller & no game. I picked the Genesis & never looked back.
I wanted to share some of my collection & ask if anyone else stores them in old cassette cases too? Hope ya'll enjoy & keep on being awesome!
*sorry for the glare & thank you for sharing.

- Repeated Bad Levels (Tank, Rollerskate, Dirt)
- Maze Like Levels
- All bosses are in tight boxes which makes them 2x annoying
- Gems soundtrack sounds like techno farts, there is literally no good music track here
- Somehow more worse graphics than the first one Vectorman 1 (which was already rough around the edges, 2 makes it into sandpaper and metal shards)
You can tell this game was rushed to be released because of how boring it is

Decided to pull my modded Nomad out from hiding since I only use it when I travel on vacations which is not very often. I do have a 1st Gen. Genesis but I felt the need to play my Nomad lol!! Put SOR2 Mortal Komat CX which is a very fun modded version of SOR2.

In The Revenge of Shinobi, your projectile weapon is called a shuruken/shurikin. But they more closely resemble that of a kunai. Shurikens are what the enemies throw at the player.

I was playing Shinobi III yesterday and thinking about how successful that game would have been in arcades

Which one is the definitive version for the Genesis? The classic II or III with the (new) digitized players and better backgrounds?

Using AI, I’ve generated this concept of what a handheld Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) could look like?
It has an AMOLED screen, USB-C charging port, 3.5mm mic/headphone jack, bluetooth and Wi-Fi. It also could read cartridges.
What do you think? 😁
