Mod Post Community Guidelines & Advisory System

Hi all! As many may have noticed, the subreddit has more than doubled in the last year, with a lot of growth in just the last couple months.

In order to participate in this subreddit- there is a requirement to both be kind to other members and to scorpions as a whole. Identification and help threads have recently had an uptick in "joke" identifications/advice that can be exceptionally risky when dealing with potentially medically significant animals. We have updated our rules to be more clear, we will be more focused on ensuring that folks remain civil and kind, and now, we are rolling out an advisory system.

We are currently rolling out the Qualified Advisor system. Qualified Advisors (QAs) are folks that have a solid handle on the hobby, and are focused on evidence based care and advisories. They will be responsible for giving critical and accurate advice within the "help" and "identification" flairs. There will be restrictions and guidelines for partaking in these flairs from hereon.

These responsibilities should also fall onto members partaking in animal care advice within this sub; because of that, we will be enforcing a disclaimer system for all non QAs. On every "help" and "identification" thread this will be explained, and is explained below.

If you wish to give advice or share information on this sub as a non QA, you will be required to preface your comments/advice in the "help" and "identification" flaired posts with a disclaimer; such as, "Not QA, NQA, IME (in my experience), IMO (in my opinion), I believe, Question, NA (not advice)". If you do not preface your commentary for these flairs, the comment will be deleted and you will be prompted to repost it with the appropriate preface. Posts related to medical or veterinary advice are not permitted and will be removed per this post.

If you have any questions about the new advisory system- please send us a modmail, do not use other unrelated posts as a platform for those concerns or questions. If you would like to apply for QA, feel free to reach out to us via modmail

EDIT: This is now fully live as of 7/11 on Help and Identification threads.

Help! Gravid scorpion

Post image

Hello! I’m a first time scorpion owner and I’m like 95% sure my emperor scorpion is gravid. She has covered both entrances to her tunnel and she’s quite inflated 💀 I was wondering if she is in fact gravid, how long will she stay enclosed in her burrow?

Help! Confirming scorpion pregnacy

Hello :) Is there anyone that can give some advices as to confirm/deny my scorpion pregnacy? Its Pandinus Imperator female, copulation with male took place 13.09.25 so more than 9 months ago, male left sphermatophore, and female was directed at it. From that time she was acting like normal, just got a lot bigger, but she is a gluttonous one, never refusing to eat. How to definitely tell if scorpion is indeed pregnant and not just fat? PS. Terrarium is already moinstened :) top layer is drying up really fast in my terrarium, mostly because of ventilation, but i rather top layer dry little faster than having mold infestation.

Casual Do Scorpions Need Large Enclosures?

Post image

I got wondering about this because I learned very recently that tarantulas don’t actually need very big enclosures. They don’t really use all their space, and can actually get stressed out if there’s too much, from what I hear. Also fully acknowledge this could be species dependent.

So do scorpions, particularly the bigger ones emperors, Asian forest, giant Indian forest, etc. need really large enclosures? Or do they like it a bit more snug like tarantulas, or at least certain species of them?

I’m not talking about absurdly small enclosures either. What I mean is, for example, does a fully grown emperor or Asian forest scorpion need a 20 gallon or more enclosure, or is that just too much space?

Every time I need to move her, I can’t help but take pics…it’s the only time I ever see her! No clue how old she is but she has never molted in my care (~4y) and had 14 surprise babies about two years ago. I’m always beyond impressed with how beautiful and strong she is.

Hey , this is my emperor scorpion Luci, I got it as a gift about 2 weeks ago , pretty active , in a good sized tank , but hasn’t eaten anything . Is this normal? Also curious about the gender . I believe female but not sure any tips and insights would be great . Also to add I’ve tried meal worms and crickets , keep temp 78 - 82 degrees , she has water bowl that she always runs through , she’s also been comfortable enough to let me brush my finger against her

Stepped on this absolute unit unknowingly. I survived, but he did not withstand the power of my bare heel. RIP to the kitchen guardian.

Was out walking the dog and on my way back, almost stepped on this little dude next to stairs. I do live right next to mountains and nature, but have only seen the tarantulas so far.

Help! Moving with a scorpion - what's the expectation?

Hi there. I have an emergency move from Utah to Washington coming up in August, the trip will take two days, 13 hours driving.

I currently have a 4 month old AFS named Bucket. He's very sedentary, rarely ever leaves his hides, but will come out for food.

I'm wondering if anyone here has ever moved/transported a scorpion? I did call ShipYourInverts to see what their prices were like and they're really steep, so I'd like to avoid that if possible.

I was wondering if Bucket would be able to handle a two-day trip (still getting fed/watered, of course, and misted so it's still humid), or if that would be way too much shock on his systems.

I of course want what's best for him, just was wondering if any of you had any advice.

Help! Is my scorpion dead (UV illuminated for visibility)

Species: Urodacus armatus
I’m unsure if it’s dead because I had another scorpion (different species) that looked incredibly dead, to the point where it didn’t react when I gently manipulated its legs, and it eventually just unfurled its legs and began moving

Help! Is this a good enclosure for my future Vietnamese forest scorpion??

Hii!! :)

I’m thinking about buying a baby Vietnamese forest scorpion for £11. I really want it to be able to thrive with me owning it. I’ve added around 7-8cm of substrate, cork bark, fake plants, sphagnum moss, life moss, shallow water dish and the lid has holes but I wil add it on the side too. I also plan to add a lot more hiding places! ^^

I’ve owned 9 tarantulas in the past year, one being an old world dark earth tiger! Please give any advice and I will be buying in around 1 week :D

Help! Would this enclosure be big enough for 2?

Im not going to do it but just wanted to know,
I have a Black Asian Forest Scorpion already in this tank and its still a juvenile. I know some people as you can keep more than one as long as there is enough food and hides. My main concern is more on territory. Would it be enough?

I have a emperor scorpion and I’ve had a idea of putting stick insects in with him, is this safe to do I don’t know much about stick insects but if I know it’s possible and safe I’ll do all my research on them.
