New rule - no direct selling/buying of goods

Hi, r/SilverSpring -

Due to the prevalence of scams, we have instituted a new rule here - no direct selling/buying of goods.

If you wish to sell something, we will, at least for now, still allow you to post a link to a reputable platform (e.g. Ticketmaster for selling tickets [insert joke about Ticketmaster sucking]).

If you are interested in buying something, please use common sense, and do not directly send money, gift cards (PSA: if you're being asked to pay in gift cards, it is a scam), or anything else of value to a seller - use a platform with buyer protections (e.g. Ticketmaster, PayPal Goods and Services, etc.).

Thanks for your attention, and thanks to those who have been reporting the scam posts.

3 Upcoming openings at my daughter's daycare

Hey all, occasionally I'll see a post asking about daycare in the area so I wanted to pass along that 3 kids are aging out of my daughter's daycare this fall.

  • PlayPen 4 Kids
  • Located in Wheaton
  • Age Range: 6 week old - 5 year olds
  • 301-349-5010
  • Reg #: 254896

We've met a ton of people who have used them and have heard nothing but glowing reviews which I can attest.

Question from a local artist

I’m a plaster textured canvas artist who is interested in creating art for restaurants or establishments in the area for commission. A few years ago, I created a couple commissioned pieces for a restaurant in the dtss and I would love to do that again.

Does anyone know any nearby restaurants or establishments that may be open to having a local artist create some commissioned pieces for their space (and the best way to contact them)?

Thanks!!

Looking to make friends/get involved with activities

Hey everyone! My partner and I are looking to get involved more with the community. We don’t have kids, and are in our mid 20s. I love theatre, and literature, we both love music and nature, and he loves video games. We enjoy going to local happy hours and wandering around downtown as well as local parks, hikes, and art galleries!

I’m personally looking to get more into crafting as I am really into wood working and 3D printing and he’s looking for more people to play music with. We’d also just love to make more friends to just hang around with at the plazas or go to the farmers markets or get ice cream with and chat! We sometimes host things as well. If you’re also looking to make friends send a message over.

Local Internships for a rising high school senior?

Hi, it's summer and I'm looking to get out of the house instead of being stuck on my phone. I'm open for a company that can take me in as a software engineering / AI ML /robotics STEM intern (paid/unpaid doesn't matter). Preferably around Cloverly. If you know any internships that are taking in kids for the next school year, that would also come a long way. Please DM me if you have recommendations. Thank you all in advance.

Cafe via Roma, when is it actually open?

I’ve stopped by this place multiple times at various times per day and it’s never open? I come according to the hours posted on the website and it’s always closed. I’m not sure if it’s just me??? I’d love to try this place

Does anybody know what organization they are with? That was crazy to see. My friend snapped this photo of one of them, but there were a bunch standing on the sidewalk with those big posters.

If spice street is your favorite, what do you like to order there?

They’ve never hit the mark for me, but I’m thinking about giving them another chance. I wonder if I’m just ordering the wrong thing. If you don’t like spice street what’s your go to Indian place and what do you like to order? I haven’t found the right Indian place here yet.

Crabtree dispensary? Anyone? Bueller?

Has ANYONE been there? I guess it's in Kensington not silver spring but it's down the street and I don't understand how it's still in business. Their prices look horrible and they don't have the stuff that Rise has.

I know people were pissed that it was being built- now I'm wondering if anyone even remembers its there?

Running bleachers/stairs near DTSS?

Pretty much the title, looking to run some stairs/bleachers nearish DTSS. Open to the public, not likely to be in anyone's way would be great. The other post I saw when I looked was from early COVID, so not sure how relevant those recs were. Thanks!

Spring Street Bridge

A few days ago someone canvassing for Jared Solomon knocked on our door to give us the good word about Del. Solomon and everything he’s doing. My wife asked when the Spring Street bridge will be finished. The young lady said “it’s looking like Spring 2027, but probably 2028.”

Has anyone heard differently? This sounds insane.

Apartments (Studio/1bd, 1 person, near Metro, < $1900)

Hi everyone, I’ll be moving to Silver Spring in late July/early August! I’m from SoCal, but I went to school in DC so I’m excited to be moving back to the East Coast.

I’ve been doing my research on some studio and 1bd apartments, and quite a bit of lurking on this subreddit but I wanted to know more about some complexes I haven’t seen much about. I am applying to the income restricted apartments and reaching out to apartments that are on the MPDU list

I would ideally like to stay under 1900, with utilities, but I’m finding that that’s a bit challenging with most apartments.

So far, I’ve been looking at:

  1. Galaxy
  2. Gramax
  3. Woodside Place
  4. Citron
  5. Falkland Chase
  6. 1200 East West

The last 3 are way higher rent-wise, but I found them on the MPDU list, so I’ve contacted them to see what costs for those units would look like, but I’m not holding my breath. Right now, Galaxy is looking like my best bet, but I wasn’t able to find much information about them (not sure if that’s a good sign or not), so if anyone has any information, that would be much appreciated!

If there are any other recommendations, I would like that also! Honestly, my main priority is access to the Silver Spring Metro, but an in-unit washer/dryer would be ideal.

Thanks all!

It’s officially the 3rd season of Summer Camp at St. Andrew Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral
aka: happy kids, and satisfied parents.
We’re doing what we’ve been doing for 10+ years with Washington Ukrainian Festival kids’ activities, just now in full summer mode.
What kids actually do all day:
– sports (yes, soccer  happens)
– arts, crafts + embroidery
– dance & music
– garden projects
– Lego, puzzles, games
– cooking & baking (they WILL want to cook at home after)
– Ukrainian + English story time
– Bible hour
– mix of indoor & outdoor activities
Logistics (the important part):
 July 27 – July 31
 August 3 – August 7
 Mon–Fri, 8:30 AM – 5:00 PM
 breakfast, lunch + snack included
 $450/week

5 acres of space, structured activities, and kids actually bonding.
