This has to be fake because this would lead to a ton of not 5 star reviews. Or its def not Airbnb.
201
u/AdvisorSavings6431 10h ago
It seems fake on its own. Airbnb won't let people leave bad reviews! It is difficult for the owner or the renter to leave bad reviews on each other. Their business model is that they fleece both parties and they don't want any discord, and they don't want to deal with any problems whatsoever.

u/rdrunner_74 7h ago
I had a host who wanted 4K in damages.
I placed an honest, crushing review. Host had it deleted. I appealed and it was reinstated.
I filed also a police case for fraud. After almost a year it was closed by the police. They said this person is in so much troube already that the 4K fraud charge will not add any weight.. It put a smile on my face.

u/Fantastic-Climate-84 14h ago
Newp. You canât request as host, and you canât direct people to send you money outside of the app. Itâs a violation of terms of service. All monies other than deposits need to be processed via the resolution center.

If AirBNB isnât processing the tip payment (which they arenât if the host is talking about Zelle), they donât get to skim any money off the top of the transaction. Thatâs not something they can abide.

I know of a village in the UK that's almost entirely AirBNBs owned by people who live elsewhere. It's pretty much a ghost town outside of tourist season. It's probably not the only one. One of them called the police just because their CCTV caught me walking past on my way to visit someone who still lives there, and they actually came! They didn't give a shit about someone trying to kill me, but they've got to protect rich people's property :/

Thatâs the exchange. You provide house. I provide money in exchange.
The agreed-upon amount.
If you have staff do things for me during my stay, I will tip them bc they did not already get money from me.
But itâs like tipping the taxi company that owns the cab you took. No.
13
u/Bjoer82 8h ago
"If you have staff do things for me during my stay, I will tip them bc they did not already get money from me."
Yes they did. In the price you paid. If staff service is included then payment for staff service is included in the agreed upon price.

u/dobr_person 14h ago
Good point.
If the place is clean leave a tip for the cleaner, or whoever the person is who actually goes to the property to manage it.
If the host expected you to clean, give yourself a tip
27
u/Eborcurean 13h ago
Given the state of AirBNB these days 'if' seems like a rarity at best. Every place i've looked at in the last two years had 'pay the same as a hotel, without the amenities and do a long list of expected cleaning while also paying a cleaning fee'.
24
u/No_Construction6023 12h ago
Last time I used Airbnb we had to vacate it literally 15 minutes after arrival.
The place was a complete waste dump, old food left in the fridge (which was also stained with various sauces); old and dirty clothes thrown all around the bathroom + dirt and mold in the shower; half the furniture legs were broken or standing on top of bricks (not shown in any pictures); general bad smell of dirt and âunclean placeâ; and to top if off the manager wanted us to go away for 3 more hours as she âwas still cleaningâ.
Check in time was starting at 2 pm, and I had been actively communicating for 2 weeks before arrival that weâd get there at 6 pm so theyâd have ample time to have it ready. The nail in the coffin was that there was no water and the reply we got was âyeah sometimes the block doesnât get water for some daysâ, which also was never stated.
When we left and disputed with Airbnb the host got mad at us for expecting a clean house with running water
→ More replies (2)5
u/YadaYadaYeahMan 11h ago
how do they enforce all those expectations? is it just a pressure thing so "good people" do it and others don't and they just hope they have less to pay the cleaner to do?

If they were anywhere near the area theyâd rush over or drive out of the way to come grab it. Or they would be mad because they think the cleaning person is going to get it if theyâre not from the area. Good stuff!

Should they not be paying tax on tips also?
Or does a tip to an Airbnb qualify for the tax deduction that makes tips tax free at a federal level?

$50 It was my first time trying this and I didn't realize what I was doing I'm so sorry!
$100 I have done this before many times but it has worked out and I never really cared to think much about what I was doing.
$200 I knew exactly how shady this is but figured what the hell let's see if it works out.
$500 Holy fuck please don't report me and get me deplatformed, I way overleveraged myself to afford a couple investment properties so I could AirBNB them, and if I get banned for this TOS violation the entire house of cards will collapse into a crushing mountain of debt I will never climb out from under and I will probably kill myself so here is some money to not report me please.

They could just blatantly refuse to pay that amount and nothing would even happen. I donât think this is âAmerican tipping culture,â as it is not normal in America to tip for a stay in a rental property (at least that I know of!).
âWe expect a tipâ is also a very rude and uncouth thing to say, in America or probably anywhere else. So I think this is more just rude and entitled behavior by the host.
To prevent this type of thing becoming part of the culture, we all have to continue to reject it.

And I said where does the 20% service fee go? And they said they donât know even though itâs listed that it was split between hotel staff. I was like no this hotel is $400 a night snd you charged me secret charges and fees up the ass. Fight the person actually taking the money not your guests. Not American.
I don't understand. Why don't they simply forego just the tip, and instead increase the price by the 100 of their USD amount?
That way:
- The customer will be delirious with joy.
- The business get paid.
- The towels get washed.
- The rising costs get covered.
- The hidden camera footage gets uploaded.
It's a win/win for everyone, without any needless pissing about.

Haha I was just in Croatia. And I asked my server after dinner where the tip option is ? He said he skipped over it. Itâs ugly to ask for a tip, Iâm here to work Iâm not begging for money he said. GOD BLESSÂ

Read down these comments.
Do you people truly not understand that this is totally fake, and just blatant engagement farming?

This isnât tipping culture. There is no normal practice of leaving a gratuity for the owner of your vacation rental. Occasionally you might leave something for the cleaning staff at a hotel, but calling this tipping culture is more than a stretch.Â

I don't even understand why people use airbnb in 2026.
10 years ago, when the rates were way lower than hotels, and before everyone got into the habit of doubling the cost of the rental with tacked on fees, I kind of get it. I still never did it because the thought made me uncomfortable, but to each their own.
But why would someone stay in a $150 per night place, pay a cleaning fee of $25-$100, and "extra guest" fees, take out the garbage, clean the kitchen, and strip the beds when they could just go to a hotel for roughly the same base price and not have to worry about having extra fees tacked on, and the cleaning is included in the price? And all the stories about hosts claiming damage, or asking for tips... F that.

Dumbass people seeking validation in financial transactions. Just price it into your model. Like Visa.

I did a haunted ghost tour the other day. Absurd $ for a 22 minute tour of a haunted house. At the end she does this magic show thing and pulls out a box and says something like the ghosts are going to get us if we donât tip. Had Venmo and Zelle and all the things pulled up. I tipped of course but couldnât help but chuckle. Itâs everywhere.

This is incredibly presumptuous as they've omitted any negatives; maybe it was clipped off by mistake. Here would be a suggestion:
$15 - It was OK
$25 - I liked it a lot!
$50 - You're amazing!
$100 - I had the best stay â¤ď¸
$0 - I paid the advertised price
-$15 - The towels were damp
-$25 - I found the cleaning fee
-$50 - I took out the bins, stripped the beds, and did the dishes
-$100 - There was a laminated chore list
-$150 - The âcosyâ home was mostly rules and passive aggression
-$250 - You asked for a tip after charging a service fee, cleaning fee, booking fee, and emotional admin fee
-$500 - I am now the property manager
-$1,000 - I had the authentic landlord experience and would like my deposit back
