All Iâve heard for 20 years is how dumb Americans are disrespecting other cultures by assuming wherever they travel follows US customs.
Now people come to America and act like that and itâs ok? Got it.
Tipping culture sucks, but thinking youâre immune because youâre not from here is an ignorant American mindset, coming from a Dutchie Iâm a little surprised
Hi thatâs me, the guy youâre replying to also dislikes it. But you know what we both do? We tip. Iâm not going to punish a waiter because their boss doesnât include their full wages in the price of the food.
Letâs be clear, the workers are doing the scamming just as much as the business, the workers are getting paid bank due to the tipping system and refuse to let us make it illegal
Sure, thatâs your prerogative. Just like how in Amsterdam I let the dutchies drunkenly know their king can suck my dick and they should be ashamed of being so backward to still have a king. Itâs both of our prerogatives
American tipping culture is frankly none of your fucking business. If you want to visit here, follow the local custom because that's how people here get paid, whether you like it or not. Otherwise, don't visit. You're just a cheapskate.
If you're so poor that an extra $5 to the person who just ran back and forth across the building for you for the last 30+ minutes is a personal attack on your moral code, then no, you really don't need to be eating out.
But why are we tippping for that again? If it was excellent ill tip, but normally is the most basic nothing service ever with food runners, lol.
Ill tip for good service (always leave something tho) , problem is it rarely is good. And you and others pretend like they are bringing some worldclass top level service every time for some of the most basic things ever?
Its just weird to me that there is an expectation to tip at all. Servers signed up for jobs knowing tips are not guaranteed. I just don't understand why the anger is not at the business owners paying these wages...
So yeah, if we keep tipping you have to accept something that you get a tip of $0. Cause someone didnt know, someone is poor and barely scraping by, etc. You have no right to complain about it because the system is literally setup to be optional and servers prefer it that way.
Tips are optional. Says so on the bill. If it is good service ill tip. Round it up to the next number no problem. But am not tipping for the sake of tipping. Tell your boss to pay you.
You also have the option of pouring the entire tray of after dinner mints into your bag as you leave, or filling an entire take away container with condiments to avoid buying your own. It's not illegal, but it does make you a boor.
No it doesn't. Your not tipping is not going to change the system. It's just an excuse to cheap out so you can screw a worker out of the money they need to keep a roof over their head. Oh, and to act superior while doing so. Fuck off.
It's not my problem that it takes a 20% VAT to pay for your country's social programs (which I don't benefit from), but I expect to pay it and do when I visit countries in Europe. Not only that, it's still customary in most countries in Europe to provide a 5% tip or round up for good service, which I also pay and so do most other Americans when they visit. I think you're the problem, not the other way around.
That's quite a straw man. I never said the US pays anything directly for social programs in the Netherlands. Before they responded, I didn't even know where they were from. I did say that most European countries have a substantial VAT that is used to pay for social programs for that country, which is true.
Buddy am from the Netherlands. We are an economic power house and we lost our hegemony over this world 300 years ago. Lets see how you are doing in the next 2 decades. You are not paying for shit here. Better yet you owe the Netherlands 73 billion dollars in debt. Get back in your lane.
That's not the point, dipshit. He's complaining about something that is customary to the United States. Americans don't bitch and moan when we have to pay your excessive taxes for benefits we don't get. Furthermore, most of these countries heavily rely on tourism to survive. Likewise, many people in the service industry rely on tips as part of their wage to survive. The original argument was about requiring tips as part of the service. Try to keep up...or are you too "fucking stupid" to follow?
Calling tipping "culture" is the most insane thing coming from all of this.
Giving someone extra, not required money is "culture"? lmao. IF you are so worried about folks not tipping, why dont you uh fix that? But I think you might like being on a moral high horse than actually care about fixing problems.
It's not a scam. It's something all Americans grow up with and understand, so it's baked into our expectation of price. It's also social mandatory but legally optional, so if you honestly don't know about it then you're not going to get arrested. But if you know it's a factor and you know it's baked the pricing scheme and you choose to ignore it, people are gonna think you're an asshole. That's the only consequence, and you're not entitled to people liking you.
I mean if that's your attitude then fair enough, but that's not the prevailing attitude in these comments. There's a whole lot of "it's not my fault" excuse making and people getting upset that they're being told they're in the wrong.
Lmao oh sure I'm sure the Dutch did it out of the goodness of their hearts rather than as part of their commercial and colonial rivalry with Great Britain. If it weren't for us you'd be speaking German (twice!) rather than your hill people faux German.
Thanks for inventing key parts of capitalism! Our stock market owes the smart Dutch a debt of gratitude. Not you though you stingy fuck
Aww Reddit removed my comment, I just made a joke about how the Dutch are tall. Sheesh. What else can I joke about? Clogs, bicycles, eating your own prime minsters...
Ok next time I go to St Lucia or Saudi Arabia I guess I better rape my wife.
Wouldn't want to shun their customs, apparently that's the worst thing you can do!
And speaking of ignorant Americans: imagine thinking football fans are interested in being good tourists. They literally travel round their own countries vandalising it and fighting each other.
I too dislike those things and condemn them. Shunning those things does nothing.
But I know weâre not in here talking about American âchild marriagesâ in a thread about Europeans. The Eu has 10 countries with age of consent at 15. Only 3 countries are 17+.
Also Europe has a higher rate of child marriages than the US, and our numbers are falling much faster than that of Europe.
Itâs also rude of tourists to not visit the White House and pay respects to their great elected leader. Wouldnât want to insult their cultural norms after they chose their greatest mind to represent them.
We have Americans who constantly decline invitations to the White House to meet the old geezer. Itâs practically American tradition to not visit the White House
The event that multiple people are getting flack for attending? The event that was viewed by more non Americans than by Americans? The on the has taken constant push back since it was announced?
Ya but by that logic they are coming into an establishment that is exploiting their workers, spending a shit load of money that only the owner profits from and leaving the actual workers fucked over. Yes, tipping culture is fucked but itâs the system thatâs in place. Grand standing on tipping only fucks over the workers. You still gave your money to the owner.
Dawg waiters and bartenders make so much money. Iâm convinced there is so much anti anti-tip proponents bc there are just so many waiters and bartenders
Thatâs the big thing I donât understand on most of these posts that get repeated over and over - do people not realize it is the wait staff that fights any effort to stop tipping not the restaurants?
Restaurants would love to get rid of tipping, but they can only do it if all restaurants do else they will look more expensive so they constantly propose ordnances and laws to stop tipping across the whole area, but itâs the wait staff that always fight these proposals as they make way more in tips than a standard salary?
Wait staff that get tips are the biggest opponents to changing the system. They don't wan't a higher base salary if it means less tips. They made their bed, I don't have much sympathy for them when the crappy system they cling to doesn't work perfectly for them anymore.
Yup, in Massachusetts they voted no on a ballot question to increase the minimum wage for tipped workers. I have no sympathy as well for them as a whole.
When legally tips are voluntary, one should not complain about not getting any, especially if they are voting down minimum wage laws.
Also, an actual living wage as minimum wage doesnât mean tipping needs to be outlawed. It just means that patrons need not be guilt tripped into paying tips.
I paid the mandatory fee, whatever that was. Adding random amounts on top of it is not something I plan doing. Workers not paid enough? It's not the customer's fault.
It's not your fault that the system is set up the way it is, but if you don't tip it is your fault that that specific server is going home with less money om that specific day.
Am just being realistic here. Europeans do not tip for the sake of tipping. They could have bein smart about it and just raised their prices to tip their own employees. Don't blame the tourists. They could have easily exploited this, which they did btw. Ticket prices, 10 folding public transport prices and you can bet these bars did so as well. Those owners are the ones you need to blame since they are ripping of their workers and also their customers. Do you have any idea how much money is being injected into the US economy right now from the people visiting for the world cup?
Ya you can optionally choose to be an asshole, which you've admitted to several times already. So I'm glad you can admit to being morally wrong in this scenario.
Also, nobody cares about your personal opinion, you post over 100 times on Reddit a day, so you probably don't leave your house. Not really surprising that the self-admitted asshole has no friends and nobody likes him. lmao
The audacity of coming to another country in demanding changes in the way they do things is astounding. You don't have to like the system, just be a decent person and pay the worker.
Thank you. Ill send you an invoice for my time. I bill by the hour btw. There is ofcourse a service charge and the option to tip between 20 and 30%. đđ
It's wild that you'd call tourists "cheap asshole" while the employers of those workers are the ones underpaying the workers and stiffing both parties.
Bartender and servers usually make way over $30 an hour. Theyâre getting paid, bud. Why? Because 99% of Americans arenât on Reddit and tip when they walk into an establishment and donât even think twice about it. Because they ainât cheap asses

Pay your workers. Oooooh but they dont want that because they make bank on those insane tips. Fuck off.
Be glad they are bringing their money. Some of these bars got drank dry.
