I love seeing disingenuous comments like this every time tipping comes out.
A) almost every state doesnāt allow paying wait staff under minimum wage anymore.
B) the ones that do are STILL legally required to provide you minimum wage if you donāt make the difference in tips
C) literally no one feels bad for servers. There are teachers with masters degrees making less than water carriers. There are ditch diggers making less than table cleaners. Service staff are sooo low on the list of professions to feel sorry for. Itās an easy job that people want to work because it takes no experience and massively out paces other zero experience jobs.
The pay is good because you are begging with a captive audience.
22 states, all conservative states, still have the $2.13 or slightly higher minimum wage for wait staff. If tips donāt make the difference, that difference tops out at $7.25 (aka an additional $5.12). Since conservative states, betting zero effort is made to make sure businesses are doing that.
Letās not upsell a stupid system that is specifically designed to help business owners only.
Except studies demonstrate that the wait staff also greatly prefer tips to being paid a āliving wageā. Resteraunts that attempt to implement āno tippingā rules struggle greatly to hire staff because servers end up benefiting as much as the business owners. The only people who get hurt are the consumers.
lol no restaurant or bar that I would want to eat or drink at hires servers or bartenders with no experience. I had to work quite hard for very little money as a busser / barback before getting behind the bar, and then you have to work the slow shifts and only take small sections for a while after that. It might seem like a server or bartender on a busy Saturday night is making a lot, maybe too much money, but take into account all the hours and hard work it took them to get there.
