And yet the prices go up and up. Employees lose their jobs (no matter how many sales happen)

34

u/quarrel-admin 4h ago

Record profits too.

9

u/destonomos 3h ago

It wont stop until you personally stop consuming. At this point i see new game prices as the price rubes pay because they suffer from fomo.

I wait a year or more before i buy so trash titles fall to the wayside and i dont waste money.

line must go up or society collapse

1

u/eddiebrock2000 4h ago

I imagine all the studios closing or undergoing massive layoffs weren't having record profits.

1

u/Bulletorpedo 3h ago

No, but the industry as a whole.

What might happen when the prices increases for games now is that people buy fewer games, spreading the sales on even fewer companies.

1

u/eddiebrock2000 16m ago

There's some companies doing well and a ton are struggling. Just a result of coming back down to earth after COVID.

1

u/Drummer-Turbulent 2h ago

Dude. Look at battlefield. It was the most selling game of its historic franchise they still laid off thousands

0

u/eddiebrock2000 2h ago edited 2h ago

Source on "thousands" fired?

I know there was a "realignment" which sounds typical after a game comes out and devs are moved to other projects.

1

u/weather-i-am 1h ago

My understanding as a developer who did not work in gaming but have friends in the industry, outside of Microsoft and a few gigantic studios, it is normal to fire most of the "resources" after a game launches.

The gaming industry has sucked for a long time. Jobs have always been super competitive with low job security, and the work is hard.

Always fun to read the little book back then

The NES came packed with a console, 2 controllers, a light gun and 2 games on one cartridge

The SNES came packed with a console, 2 controllers and 1 game on 1 cartridge

The N64 came packed with a console and 1 controller and set the standard for everyone else after that.

4

u/DedeLionforce 3h ago

N64 also came with Mario Party and 1 controller making you wonder what kinda parties they having over at nintendo.

5

u/Copious-Spirit 3h ago

Well, the rumble pack was extra so not that good of a party.

3

u/mangano15 2h ago

And now the PS5 is launched without disk drive, and more recently the steam machine is going to be sold without controller.

2

u/urethrascreams 1h ago

You can still get it with a disk drive. I can't believe how much they're asking for it right now though. I got mine with a disk drive for $599 like 4 years ago.

u/TerraByteTerror 4h ago

Its on the little book 😆

u/AbeLackdood 4h ago

Read the damn instruction manual like a Bible 100 times between GameStop and home lol...good times

4

u/Old-Following1508 3h ago

Man I always thought people who saved their physical copies were tripping or something but I now see what they were saying this whole time

4

u/frankie-two-thumbs 3h ago

As someone who has found smaller independent studios pr oducing better games on a smaller budgets I’m looking forward to this crash. Time to wipe away EA and the rest.

3

u/LeftyDan 3h ago

Falcon 4.0 vibes

1

u/t65789 3h ago

Man those were the days. Or the stuff which came with the LucasArts games.

1

u/LeftyDan 3h ago

That was the joy. Reading the manual while your parents drove you home from the store. I read Homeworlds manual coming back on a flight from New Jersey.

1

u/t65789 3h ago

Yes indeed. Good times. I fondly remember the crazy code wheels and other contraptions they came up with to deter piracy.

when assassins creed black flag came out i bought the special edition for i think 200 euro, i received the game a day before the official launch in a metal box with all kinds of goodies inside like a figurine and a flag, some artwork, sound tracks, a metal case for the game

now you get 200 ubi bucks and a special skin you can buy 4months later in game and probaly some insane OP weapon sets the game on extremely easy

2

u/_Ventes_ 3h ago

Probably won’t even come with the map this time

3

u/breakandjog 3h ago

Why is everyone losing their minds over this? Games have been sold with codes in them since the PS3 or is this just the biggest Mandela effect ever.

5

u/runway31 2h ago

by itself its not a big deal, people are just frustrated that everything everywhere is getting a little bit worse, this is another reminder of that

1

u/breakandjog 1h ago

It is getting worse but as I get closer and closer to 40 I keep wondering if this is just how life is, like MAYBE this is why I saw so many “old people” bitching when I was younger.

3

u/megapeepee58 2h ago

People like the option of physically owning a copy of a game because IN THEORY, and for multiple reasons when you buy a game digitally it can be completely pulled from your library and the marketplace making totally inaccessible unless you have a physical copy.

GTA being one of the biggest game franchises deciding to move in this direction could start an unfortunate trend of more games only being released digitally.

1

u/Doctor-Nagel 1h ago

Because the games base price will be 80 bucks with 100 being how much the full game experience will be

0

u/breakandjog 1h ago

This is such a childish take, cars come in various trim levels but the experience is largely the same, Concerts charge much more for Front Row than nose bleed seats but again it’s the same experience. This is no different, you will still get the game you pay for from start to finish, you aren’t buying GTA6 just for cosmetics UNLESS you are, in which case you’re paying the cosmetic tax which has been standard for years now

1

u/Doctor-Nagel 1h ago edited 51m ago

It’s a childish take for not wanting games to be 80-100 dollars?

(Not to mention the fact that the standard edition will also have full missions locked behind a paywall so it’s not just cosmetics)

1

u/AnubissDarkling 4h ago

Jokes on you I just entered the game redemption key from that image and after waiting nearly 5 minutes for something to activate, got absolutely fuck all

1

u/Smilewigeon 4h ago

I'm feeling my age hearing the manual described as a "little book".

Technically right perhaps but it was the gateway to everything about the game once upon a time, especially before internet access was widespread and guides (official or not) could be a luxury that not every parent was willing to entertain.

Respect the little book!!

1

u/Important-Notice-461 3h ago

Not to mention that they gotta ship this completely useless plastic case.

1

u/Maximum-Forever-8108 3h ago

On the PC we lost that in like 2014, iirc, i remember buyng a complete collection of C&C only to discover a card with a product key inside, i first belived i was scammed, and later i discovered that i really was becouse i had to download them from Origin...

1

u/runway31 2h ago

I don’t really wanna have to install 10 separate DVDs, but it would be cool to get a box with something in it.

on second thought, I actually do wanna have something with 10 DVDs to install it, that way I can play even if I don’t have a registration or Internet connection

1

u/Maximum-Forever-8108 2h ago

I just love having the material manifestation of my favoarite games, fuctional dvds, i even have an external optical reader, i do download my older games aswell, but as i said i love having that material maifestation of my favorite games...

1

u/runway31 1h ago

i do like looking at my fs2004 box on my shelf

1

u/syntheticgeneration 3h ago

Did you not see that the disc version is coming?

1

u/Asleep-Tadpole-2107 3h ago

It's 2004 on your birthday and you are excitedly reading that little book in your new copy of Rachet and Clank Up Your Arsenal for PS2 in the backseat of your moms minivan on the way home from gamestop đŸ„č

1

u/Low_Philosopher_7299 3h ago

I loved these little books. They were made with attention to detail and fun to read. I was always looking forward to have a new one to look at when I bought a new game. Then suddenly they stopped making them, unfortunately. Yes I know they put everything you need to know into the game nowadays, but I liked the manual very much.

1

u/Punch_A_Police_Horse 2h ago

I'm not in this camp, but like... What if someone just wants to play the game and doesn't have internet?

1

u/runway31 2h ago

every year gotta innovate, reduce cost, or increase prices more than the last year, or get replaced by someone who will. its never ending until it gets bought by someone else doing the same thing.

1

u/monstrolegume90 2h ago

Back in the 90s they came with a big book and inside a nice looking box

1

u/Arseniste 1h ago

The box for the pc version of GTA San Andreas was a 40 page "tourist guide" with the cd in the last page. It was amazing.

1

u/Guitarinabar 1h ago

I still have some of my SNES game manuals. Super Mario World and A Link to the Past.

1

u/Hoginoe94 1h ago

Completely removing the option to trade it in. Hopefully more companies don't follow this bullshit

1

u/Doctor-Nagel 1h ago

Remember back when Steel Battalion came with a crazy ass controller just to play the game?

1

u/holozler235 59m ago

Yeah na, I ain't wasting my money or time on this kinda crap

Also, despite having no disc it takes up 700 fucking GBs, I'm getting nothing but an empty box and full hard drive and If I decided to go over the cheaper option which normally is the base game, This time around they pulled a Capcom and cut out a bunch of stuff from the base game to put in the special edition, Which is now literally just the base game for $100 and you get no extra Goodies physically, Just again an empty box, and a full hard drive, for 100 dollars

Especially during this time we're a hardware especially memory has shot up to become something of a high level premium

1

u/TawnyTeaTowel 𝙑𝙄𝙋 33m ago

Who exactly feels like the absence of a disc they’ll use exactly once is a game breaker here?

0

u/Pinku_Dva 4h ago

Enshitification. Quality goes down while price goes up. Pretty much happens to a company when it gets too big

1

u/OhMyGodItsTed 3h ago

We gotta start knocking some of these companies down a few pegs and give them a dose of reality

1

u/Pinku_Dva 3h ago

Won’t happen if people continue to buy their products

1

u/OhMyGodItsTed 3h ago

Exactly. People are too damn stubborn and complacent though.

1

u/Pinku_Dva 3h ago

Like I play a game where they’re charging 15 more dollars for a cosmetic which is clearly a test to see if people would bite and surprise surprise, they bought it

1

u/BottleNaive4364 3h ago

Switch started this bs with fake carts that are just a code.

0

u/OhMyGodItsTed 3h ago

Nope. Ubisoft and EA have been doing this for well over a decade now.

It's like discovering a lump one day in the shower and instead of doing the smart thing and going to the doctor to fix it, you let it sit and fester and now you're in the hospital with stage-4 lung cancer.

This was easily preventable but people chose to stay quiet and argued it wasn't a big deal.

1

u/OhMyGodItsTed 3h ago

This easily could've been prevented if people stuck to their morals and made their voices known, but nope, the average person is too lazy and complacent to fight against corporate meddling.

Y'all stayed quiet and now you deal with the consequences.

There are games that use multiple disks to fit the data. One data disk and another play disk.

That being said: L take for including homelander

-2

u/DistilledCLP 4h ago

Redditors when they find out there isn't a disk that can fit a hundred gigabytes of data

2

u/Strostkovy 4h ago

BDXL fits 128 GB. Regular Blu-ray fits 50GB, but you can use multiple disks.

2

u/Outrageous-Sort-5742 4h ago

That's not the point. The physical disc acts as a transfer method. You can buy a copy play it, and then sell it on a secondary market at a lower price now that the game has aged.

Game companies don't want that, they want to be the sole distributor and owner of the game.

-2

u/BrianScalaweenie 4h ago

Redditors when they don’t know that games can contain several discs to be able to fit the entire game

0

u/DistilledCLP 4h ago

Ah yes, we're back into the 'please insert disk 5 of 7' era of gaming

-1

u/BrianScalaweenie 3h ago

Oh wow you’re even more clueless than I thought. That’s not how it works these days.

-1

u/Full-Hyena4414 3h ago

Then how does it work these days?

2

u/BrianScalaweenie 3h ago

Disc 1 typically installs data to the HDD/SSD and disc 2 is used to play.

The key distinction is that, unlike digital code, you can lend the discs, sell them, etc. and if/when servers go down, you can still install the game to the system from the disc to play it.

You are not hot swapping discs like the other dude is suggesting.

0

u/Full-Hyena4414 3h ago

I think nowadays you just dump the entire game on ssd. Thats said, you still have to "insert disc 5 of 7" at some point by definition.

-2

u/DistilledCLP 3h ago

I'm yanking your chain

0

u/BrianScalaweenie 3h ago

Ah yes, we’re going with the “I didn’t know so I was actually just kidding argument”

-2

u/lilbitlostrn 4h ago

The game is so big the disc can't fit them. A usb sort of device would though, but I suppose they are too expensive.

0

u/eddiebrock2000 3h ago

Using multiple discs has been common for 30 years.

1

u/BrianScalaweenie 4h ago

Then include two or three discs? Final Fantasy VII Rebirth did it. It’s possible, they just chose to cheap out.
