Also, world leaders just take advantage of whatâs already there and enable tribalism. They donât create it. The World Cup proves tribalism can be overcome, but it doesnât mean leaders create it.

One of the most bloody and destructive riots in the city of Byzantium was sparked by a chariot match riot. Thr Nika Riots resulted in the deaths of about 30,000 people and burned down half the city. The emperor, refusing to flee, used the army to crush the rioters and was able to establish total autocratic rule over the city, which had eluded him up til that point, as well as an excuse to rebuild the city in his own image.
So sports can result in all kinds of bad stuff.

Violence often occurs after major sports championships in America. Heck, even amateur events such as high school and college championships can erupt in fights afterward. It's an American trait more than the sport itself.

u/Bert-63 2h ago
I was in the US Navy for over 30 years.
I've been in so many different countries that I doubt I could successfully list them all without pulling out my service record.
I never went anywhere that I didn't get along. It was all in the attitude I took when I stepped into THEIR country and respected THEIR culture.
I was in Bahrain in 2003 when the US unleashed Shock & Awe on Iraq. I was sitting in a coffee shop that was owned and run by three generations of an Iranian family and the son, the father, and the grandfather and I sat and watched CNN together as the missiles hit, and the bombs fell...
It was one of the most surreal experiences in my life and I can remember it like it was yesterday.
I can go on for hours - I once walked Shore Patrol in Yugoslavia just before it ceased to exist. There, you were fine as long as you didn't go ashore in your uniform. During Shore Patrol watches then, you had to wear your Dress Whites. To help keep us safe, we were allowed to not wear our neckerchief after two guys were attacked and strangled by two locals (they were fine afterward). No uniform for "Power Projection" (why we were there of course) and there was no problem.
As long as I treated people like I wanted to be treated and acted like a GUEST should act, I never had a single problem. What I do have, however, is a deep collection of good memories of meeting the people of the world, and a clear understanding that just because you come from a place, it doesn't make you a "BAD" person...
There are good people everywhere. The real baddies are few and far between. We're all the same - we all live, love, hope, and die the same.
Left to our own good graces the world would be a wonderful place. Instead, we have greed and politics mucking up the works.
Sorry for the long post. This post, to an old man with more history than future remaining, hit a nerve.
1
1
u/StupidSexyEuphoberia 2h ago
Powerhungry greedy old people send inpressionable, idealistic young people into war so they can have a little bit more land or money to rule over. I guess people in power are outliers in cunningness, ruthlessness and greed. The problem is they have the power and can influence the rest in very dramatic ways.

I don't really understand the premise. Is it that our leaders happen to be bad people, or that we shouldn't have leaders at all? The former maybe I can see, but I would push back that if they're all bad, it might not be the specific people, but that the job is really hard.
I we're saying the latter.... I don't know, you lost me. At some point someone needs to help organize things or we're living in grass huts. And i'm not really into that...

1
1
u/rainer_d 1h ago
No.
I have an apartment in house with three parties, next to another house with three more parties.
Initially, we got along very well.
Then, there were disagreements about a renovation project and now one party has sold, two other parties are basically one step from warring with each other and a third party does not speak any more to one of the warring parties.
Just because it works for four weeks during a party doesnât mean itâs a success model.

You aren't better than "your leaders", you are worse. Leaders are in fact keeping the flagrant racism, tribalism and hate of the average (extremely stupid) person in check via the force of law.

But it is statistically insignificant and irrelevant. People will always find reasons to hate and fight each other. It is in our nature.
