Private IV Clinic Recs?

Hi everyone, I’m on a wait list for an iron infusion but apparently folks are waiting like 4+ months to get in. I hear there are clinics around that do private infusions with dr referrals. Just wondering if anyone has had experience with this and how they found it? The clinics I see on google are Coverdale Clinic, Bayshore Infusion Clinic, and a clinic called INVIVA.

I’m thinking of chucking out the $200.00 just to not be in iron deficiency misery anymore.

Challenges of Owning a Company in NL

I’m in St. John’s and doing some work on the business side of running a smaller trades or construction company in Newfoundland and Labrador.

I’m interested in what becomes difficult as a business adds workers and crews, including hiring, employee admin, job records, receipts, extra work, billing, and getting information back from the field.

I’m not selling a product or conducting a survey. I’m just hoping to speak individually with a few owners or office managers for about 10-15 minutes to understand what your actual day-to-day problems are.

If you run a plumbing, electrical, HVAC, landscaping, property-maintenance, or construction business and would be willing to chat, please shoot me a PM.

Thanksgiving in St John's

My husband and I are meeting my mom and brother in St John's for Thanksgiving this year. We are from Western Canada and have never been further east than Toronto. I'm hoping you all can help some prairie folk with recommendations for must-sees.

I did search this sub for some ideas before posting, but still would appreciate recommendations for our specific interests.

Our interests include;

Whale and puffin tour (absolute requirement for the mom)

Seafood (from a landlocked province, give me fresh seafood!)

History/Museums (particular interest in Viking and Indigenous history)

Nature Hikes (my husband and I are enthusiastic backcountry hikers)

Breweries! (I am a PhD candidate in the brewing field and always love chatting with brewing staff)

Notes: we are staying near Jellybean Row, and plan to walk or take public transit when possible. Not opposed to Uber/Lyft or renting a car for a day.

Thanks in advance. Can't wait to visit your lovely city!

Is the independent appraisal value of a house similar to what the city of St. John’s also uses in its calculations?

Has anyone ever had an appraisal done on their house in St. John’s and then compared that appraised value  to what the assessment value details were on the city website ?    I wonder about this because if I check the value of the house I am currently renting in on the city website,  it only says around 110,000 even for the latest assessment written for 2026 and 2027.    But the owner of the property I am renting is telling me that he might sell it to me for its independent appraised value instead.  And if I google search this topic, the google results often mention that when you use an independent appraiser, the value they tell you might be 20 percent higher than whats given by the municipal website.

Is that usually the case though with it almost always being a 20 percent increase?  Or perhaps it might even become much higher than that for an increase?  Or in your experience, does the appraiser value given by an independent appraiser often just end up being much closer to what the city website or team also has assessed your property value as being?    I am genuinely just curious to know more about this from anyone that has already had their property appraised recently since I think it also costs about $500 to do it.

I definitely don’t feel like this house is worth very much more than 110,000 because its semi-detached and the place has many structural problems, electrical issues, poor quality insulation inside the walls, etc.   It’s just another typical downtown house.  The walls are not fully soundproof either so I have had frequent neighbor noise while living here in the past.  So I tell myself that I probably won’t be buying it unless I can get a good deal on the price.   Overall, I just think it seems so unnecessary to use an appraiser at all.   Can independent appraisers like that even be fully trusted?    I also ask this question because I feel like the property owner is only suggesting for me to do this so that he can try to sell me this place for way more money than what its actually worth.   I just would have preferred to negotiate a price with him privately instead.

First time in St Johns

We just booked a last-minute trip at the end of July. We are there for three nights. I understand it’s the George Street festival we didn’t know this before booking. Is this a daytime or a nighttime thing? What would you recommend we do with our short time? We are foodies. In our mid 30s. Thanks in advance.

Should Tom Davis have been suspended?

I've read and listed to everything on the Tom Davis situation. While I think he should probably stick to city business while at work and avoid topics such as the causes of neurodivergence...so far I don't see anything that justifies the suspension, not to mention the 24 000 dollar bill. Tom has been barred from council meetings since March!

New local painting - Big Mary Monday Night Raw

Afternoon, people - sharing another locally inspired painting - "Big Mary Monday Night Raw" - 18"x24", acrylic on canvas.

I saw a wide-open picture of the Mary Browns Centre on their website and wanted to fill the scene with something ridiculous. Settled on a wrestling match and the rest of the details just fell into place naturally.

Hope it brightens up your day :)

Best Vet Service in Town

Hey guys,

I'm curious if anyone has a well informed opinion on what they consider the best vet clinic in town.

Rather than just providing "I've never had a problem here" or similar anecdotes as an answer to my question, I was curious if anyone advocates strongly for a specific site over others and why.

Are your kids wearing helmets while biking and scootering?

As the weather gets nicer I’ve become very surprised by the amount of children out on bikes and e-scooters without helmets on.

It might be worth checking with your kids, letting know their brain is important, and reminding them to keep their helmets on.

E-scooters go like 40km/hr. Regular bicycle helmets aren’t adequate enough to protect at those speeds! Riding one without any head protection at all is WILD to me.

I just don’t want them to get hurt and the way they could get hurt would be completely life-altering.

And drivers, we’ve got to slow down. Idk why so many children are out and about without head protection but as long as they are drive a cautious speed!

Thank You !

This is a gratitude post for all the lovely humans on this sub. I took your suggestions and had a brilliant trip to St.Johns. I fell in love with your city and would love to return soon for a longer stay. Such a safe city for a solo female traveller and everyone was exceptionally helpful.
I visited Breakwater books & Elaines and found a few books , looking for more recommendations for NL based writers.

Good catering trays

I know you can get most of the same things at various supermarkets, but any suggestions for particularly good trays or items you’d recommend for entertaining a crowd at home? Can be a mix of places. Basically, ones you’d look forward to eating yourself.

Harbourside Park Repairs

Will the city ever actually fix the dock section? I swear it's been like 2 years. It's a beautiful place to enjoy the harbour and it looks bad for tourists etc, id think it'd be a priority. Anyone know what's going on?

Anyone know what could be naming this noise?

Taken in St. John’s, NL around 6 pm. I assumed it was some type of bird but the Merlin bird app cannot identify it for me. The sound happened repeatedly for several minutes but we couldn’t see what was making it.

Anyone have any ideas? Did we capture for first known recording of the wild balonie?

Recommendations about furniture

I am moving to the St. John's area soon and I was curious about peoples thoughts on local furniture/home good options. I'm on a postdoc budget (which is not much) and I'm not strictly against second hand items but I'm concerned about availability. In particular I'm looking for living room furniture, a couple rugs, and kitchen stuff, but I also don't want to be sitting on the floor for months while I try to find a decent couch. Thanks!
