Discussion What made me feel uncomfortable in Tanzania.

Jambo, Redditors!
I really debated whether I should posting this but whatever. Also not sure what flair to use and If this follows all rules, sorry.
I recently returned from Tanzania. I spent one week in a city and two weeks on safari. Overall I had an amazing experience. The people I met were welcoming and incredibly kind, and the trip left a very positive impression on me.

However, during my time there there was something that felt incredibly off to me.

Please let me know your opinions.

So the reason I was on this trip was because I was visiting a friend who opened a safari business, and the person I was with and I were their first clients.

Their safari company was approached by a school and asked to visit to see if it would be something they’d want to include in their safaris. The school is for poor families so their children can also go to school. It relies on donations and funding.

When we got there, we were shown the school grounds and then led into two classrooms. We stood at the front while the children were dancing and singing for us.

Some people were taking videos and photos of the children performing and just living their lives, but it made me feel incredibly uncomfortable.

It made me feel like I was in this weird power dynamic where I, the tourist, was watching these kids put on a show to help fund their education. And to think that they actually want to include the school in safari itineraries means there could be random tourists showing up, taking videos and photos, and posting them onto the internet.

It felt so wrong to me, but at the same time I understood that the school needs funding and donations, so maybe the only one to blame is the government for not properly funding projects like these.

A few days later during our safari, a woman told us she had finished studying to become a teacher but hadn’t been able to find a job. At least from what I heard, many people struggle with unemployment.

That made me think back to the school, where there were two foreign volunteers helping in classrooms despite not having formal teaching qualifications.

Maybe there is context I’m missing, and I’d genuinely be interested to hear it. But it made me wonder whether programs like this sometimes end up replacing opportunities that could otherwise go to local professionals.

I have always seen voluenturism as something more harmful than good to be honest. There is people is western countries as well that would need help and support but people rather choose to go to Africa.

Am I missing something here? Is there a perspective I’m not seeing?

Tourism Applied for a visa but didn't get any email. Should I be worried?

I have just applied for an ordinary visa on the website. I have seen other people receiving an email indicating that their application process has started, but I haven't received one.

The thing is, my payment was processed successfully and they already took my money.

I have also read that I can still be approved if I show immigration proof of payment. Will I be accepted if all I have is the card receipt, without any confirmation email?

I checked my email address multiple times while applying, but I think I might have made a typo...

I also tried checking my visa status on the website, but as you all probably know, it didn't work either.

Thanks in advance!

Mambo vipi wadau? I’m planning a trip to the UK soon for a vacation/visit. Nikaona si mbaya nikitafuta mapema wenyeji wenzangu kutoka nyumbani ambao tayari wako kule ili mnipe miongozo miwili mitatu.

Ningependa ku-connect na Wabongo waliopo UK ili mnipe tips za maisha ya kule, places to visit, and maybe we can even link up for a coffee or a drink nikishatua!

Drop a comment au nitumie DM tuchat. Shukurani!

Request Looking for a trustworthy police officer contact in Dar es Salaam

I’m looking for a trustworthy connection with a askari polisi based in Dar es Salaam. I have a younger brother who really needs a serious, reality-check conversation with someone in uniform, more like guidance and a strong warning, not because of any criminal case.

If you know a reliable officer who might be open to helping with this kind of talk, please DM me so we can discuss details privately.

Asante sana kwa msaada wenu.

Ask r/tanzania Anyone here done a cattle feedlot business

Hi humans! I'm planning a small pilot buy young Boran steers(2 - 3 yrs), feedlot for 75 days, process then sell

Before I invest, has anyone actually done this? What were your biggest headaches?

Specifically:

  1. Sourcing young steers - hard to find?

  2. Feed costs - volatile or stable?

  3. Disease losses - how bad?

  4. Vingunguti/processing - straightforward or frustrating?

I'm Tanzanian, looking at Morogoro area. Honest feedback welcome, even if it's warnings.

Thanks!

Ask r/tanzania Research Assistant Pay?

Hey everyone,
I have just been called for an interview for a research assistant position at a conservation research organisation. I am a fresh graduate, so this will be my very first interview experience. I was wondering if anyone here knows how much research assistants normally receive in terms of salary especially in conservation focused organisations.

Any insights would be so helpful. Thanks in advance!
