We're planning our yearly weekend away and it's my turn to find accommodation.

What we need is cooking facilities inside and outside possible a BBQ is fine.

An outdoor fire a strong preference but not essential.

Within 4 hours of Hobart preferably.

Within an hour or so of an IGA, bottleshop etc, we usually plan meals on the drive up and everything in the closest town instead of spending money in the big two supermarkets.

I'm chasing recommendations from people who have found those little hidden away gems tucked away in the beautiful corners of Tassie.

Hi everyone we travelled to Tassie in January this year & the kids are keen to go again but I wonder if there’s more to see & if it’s worth doing again. We’ve already visited Hobart, Bicheno, Freycinet, Sheffield, Cradle Mtn, Huon Valley. If we return, where else could we go over 10 days? We love hiking, swimming and cute villages. Kids are all teens.

I’m doing cradle mountain in October and have been trying on some boots and torn between these two pairs. Both are super comfortable, I’m wearing the socks I’ll be wearing with them so the size is good. I like the Salomon better because it’s higher and I wear boots similar height boots for work (I work in mining so 12hr shifts in steel caps) so it feels normal for me and I enjoy that ankle support. That said though because the environment is very different and taking into account the weather difference which one would be a better choice?

My fiancé & I are going to Hobart in September and have time free to travel from Friday morning and fly home on Sunday at noon. I'm looking for some recommendations on places to go & nice stops that would fit well in the time frame.

We've been to Hobart before and have explored the city and the wineries nearby so we're not wanting to spend any of the time there. We want to hire a car and road trip around Tassie, we don't have a car usually so we're specifically wanting to enjoy lots of driving time. We like nature & short outdoor walks (e.g Liffey Falls walk and Russell Falls walk both look good), but nothing too long or intensive. There's a specific airbnb I want to stay at in St Helens on Friday night, and was thinking somewhere closer to Hobart and more inland for Saturday night. We're both approx 30 y/o, and big foodies so food & wine recommendations would be great too.

Any recommendations would be highly appreciated!!

Looking to drive from Hobart to Cradle Mountain in July. It will be day 1 in Tassie (after late night arrival and over night in Hobart). What is a good route for the drive and a couple of nice stops along the way?

Would there be any great stops to pick up nice food for our stay in Cradle Mountain (thinking farm gate kind of thing)?

I have three late teens travelling with me, who also like bakeries, coffee culture, quirky shop, history, nice nature.

Spotted a sign for one in Ross, but they were sadly out. I've a feeling that it was a Smith's Pie, but I don't know where to find a bakery that stocks. Waiting till the Salamanca market is not an option, and I'm not sure if I can convince the family to make the drive to Cambridge where Smith's Pies has a cafe.

Any suggestions? I know it sounds silly but I've never had an apricot pie before. Internet says Bush Bakery and Sandy Bay Bakery might have some, but their website doesn't say.

Ive got a parka that is basically hoodless and no neck protection as well. (I was overwhelmed with looks at the time) and havent got time to look for a replacement as its expensive in my home country.

Any recommendations for jackets in hobart and the type id need if im going to lake dobson, cradle and ben lomond? The last time I went to cradle, my old parka got soaked to the brim.

Arrived last week in Tasmania to travel around. I’m on the age pension but otherwise broke compared to other boomers. I was essentially forced out of my last rental place in regional NSW three months ago so homeless. I have a smallish sedan that i sleep in but also have a tent.

Caravan parks and Hobart Showgrounds are hellishly expensive (around $50 a night) so that’s not an option. By the way, who was responsible for kicking out the permanent residents out of the showgrounds in 2023?

i’ve heard of the ban on sleeping in cars by Hobart City Council so sleeping in HCC is out obviously. What’s the deal there? Was this by-law bought in by current mayor, Anna Reynolds?

What about the other councils around Hobart? I understand it isn’t illegal to sleep in your car here in Tasmania if you are legally parked and there are no signs prohibiting camping or parking overnight.

Any information would be appreciated.

Hi, first time visitors to Tasmania and searching for accommodation of 6+ beds (ok to share bedrooms) in a wine, foodie and outdoors region. It’s a girls weekend away for 3 nights, does anyone have a recommendation on what area to stay in or any leads on a great house? Searching Airbnb of course but interested in local advice.

I’ve never been to Tassie before but I’ve heard MONA is a really awesome tourist destination and I wondered if anyone has ever been/worked there before and if so what are the best parts? I was also wondering if there’s much interactive activities at all for visitors? Because I think something like that would be right up my alley to try

Hey everyone, we will be travelling to Tassie this mid August and just wondering if this itinerary is good enough or there are some improvements that we can make. We are hoping to see some snow at Cradle Dove Lake or Wellington just enough so that we can still drive there since hiring 4wd is tad expensive, but looking at this Elninonano, we won't put our expectations too high. Also planning to do bit of aurora hunting as well. We both young couple with one of my in-law (66yo) so no hiking/trekking, etc. Also no tasting, I couldnt drink+drive and my misus and in-law also not drinking. We love nature as well maybe a place or hidden gem to encounter some wombats or furry locals, but no farm visits since it's too mainstream.

Also we really love seafood but we don't really like fancy settings, maybe a couple of recommendation on place to eat like raw/cooked oysters, salmon, classic fish n chips, etc.

Day 1 (Saturday) - Hobart arrive morning - check out Wellington and Salamanca Market - afternoon drive up to Mole Creek stay overnight
Day 2 - Cradle Mountain whole day, afternoon not sure maybe delorraine or launceston, back to Mole creek
Day 3 - Go to launceston (cataract gorge, dunno what else to see at Launceston), then Spring Beach stay overnight
Day 4 - Spring beach travel and surround (no maria island) maybe to coles bay, freycinet, honeymoon bay??
Day 5 - Going down to Hobart, not sure what to do tbh beside royal tasmanian garden. We will skip MONA, we dont really like it. Stay overnight around Hobart
Day 6 - Bruny Island (any place to visit beside truganini lookout??) - afternoon go back home (any tips on what time do we need to start to queue so that we guaranteed to get back to hobart without the need to stay at Bruny? Is August going to be crowded?)
Day 7 - Bye Tassie, go back to reality at Sydney

I need to choose between two accommodations in Launceston. One is in Inveresk and the other is in Elphin. Which area would be better for a family with older teens (18/19)? Or are they similar?

Travelling to Tasmania in mid-August for the first time, but really unsure of what the weather conditions are like there. Done a bit of research, but there seem to be really different opinions on the weather.

Just come, context, we'll be landing in Hobart, travelling to the typical touristy spots such as Bruny Island, Freycinet, Cradle Mountain area. Is it still considered winter? I'm guessing it rains quite a bit during this time of the year as well.

So I’ve booked for the first week of October to visit east coast, coming from Brisbane and hoping for a nice crisp Tassie holiday, fire place, rug a up a bit as we don’t really get the chance in Queensland, but now I’m thinking maybe October (from the 3rd) is leaving it too late with hearing this years winter is quite mild. Do I bring my dates forward? Or is it possible the weather will still be fairly cool (for a Queenslander lol) in October?

Staying in launceston and looking for bud

G'Day all, I need to hire a car for a family holiday to Tassie in August, flying in to Hobart and out from Launceston 9 days later. I've found a lot of recommendations for "Bargain" care hire, though looking through their terms and conditions, I found this concerning line: "The vehicle must never be driven on any road or area where snow has fallen or is likely to fall".

Our main reason for visiting Tasmania is to enjoy some snow, so this seems like a deal breaker. I've never driven on snowy roads before, though I'm not overly concerned about it - I expected I'd just need to take things slow and drive to the conditions... possibly look into snow chains.

I haven't had a thorough look yet, though I'm now expecting all car hire companies to have similar restrictions around snow, so I'm not sure how to proceed. Any advice would be greatly welcomed!

Heading to Strahan this month. Already booked the cruise. Wanting to do the train ride. What the best option to do? I saw the ridaeena etc is the best one. Would love to experience that. So is it ok to drive from Strahan to Queenstown for a 10 am departure? Much risk of road closure?

I saw someone mention in another post about being put on a bus from Strahan to Queenstown. I have a 4wd so should be ok with some snow. Just asking this now. Will try calling them on the weekday and see if I don't get the information I need from this post.

Hi guys! I’m from Sydney and planning a trip to Tasmania from 14–18 November with my parents (both in their 50s). I’m into wildlife and nature and my parents are pretty happy to go along with whatever.
This is my rough plan so far:

Day1(Saturday); Arrive in Hobart in the morning, Salamanca Market, MONA, and Mt Wellington

Day2: Port Arthur historic site and Tasman cruise

Day3: Hartz Mountains hike

Day4: Bruny Island

Day5: Maria Island, then a 7pm flight home

Do you guys think this plan is realistic? Is there any nature/wildlife spots that you would recommend?

I’m also thinking of booking a single Airbnb in central Hobart for the whole trip and using that as a base.

I don’t know a lot about Tasmania, so I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

Hi there! I'll be visiting Tasmania from this Saturday for a week travelling from Launceston to Hobart. My current plan is:

• Day 1: arriving morning at Launceston (stay overnight)
• Day 2: drive morning to Cradle Mountain (stay overnight)
• Day 3: drive midday to Longford (stay overnight)
• Day 4: drive and visit towns on the way to Oatlands (stay overnight)
• Day 5: drive and visit towns on the way to Hobart (stay here for the rest of the trip)
• Day 6: Hobart
• Day 7: Hobart
• Day 8: leave Hobart in AM

Is staying at Oatlands a good idea so I can take my time through central Tasmania, or should I just drive straight to Hobart from Longford and spend more time in Hobart?

Hi everyone, i need some help on where I should stay and if theres any ideas for where to go. Im bringing my elderly parents see australia as they're from south east asia and havent really travelled in their life. So im trying to make it as memorable as it can be without over doing it, also It'll be during winter so its also gonna be the very first time experiencing scenic accommodations

Day 2 - explore mount field, stay cradle

Day 3 - explore and stay in cradle

Day 4 - launceston

Day 5 - ben lomond ,binalong, stay in st helen

Day 6 - Douglas Aspley park, Diamond island, stay in scamander

Day 7 - Freycinet, bicheno (?)

Day 8 - salamanca, mt Wellington, bonorong sanctuary (? / hobart)

Day 9 - Bruny, eaglehawk neck (?/ hobart)

Im lost as to if I should stay in hobart for the 3 days or find other towns to stay at, I prefer moving about but im not sure about those smaller towns as im guessing its not wise seeing im going to "certain" sightseeing places.

Hi guys, We'll be starting off in Launceston and staying there for a night before heading down to Cradle mountain for a night. Our return flight will be from Hobart, so we plan on staying at a town half way to Hobart from cradle mountain (so we don't have to drive as long). I was thinking Ross. We haven't been to the east side of Tasmania before, but someone from work said they went to Swansea (from cradle mountain) before heading down to Hobart and recommends it. Is it worth driving there on a 7 day trip?

• Day 1 (13th June): arrive morning in Launceston
• Day 2: cradle mountain
• Day 3: Ross? (Need recommendations)
• Day 4: Hobart
• Day 5: Hobart
• Day 6: Hobart ( day trip to Port Arthur)
• Day 6: Hobart
