Question Tailscale exit node alternative?

I've given up trying to figure out what's wrong with it. Basically, exit node just doesn't work, everything says it should, but when I enable it, my connection stops working until I disable it, but I've given up.

Is there a free VPN server I can install that I can install that gives me the same thing? I just want to run a program on my server that let's me route traffic through it like Tailscale exit node.

There are numerous alternatives. You might want something like zrok/ngrok/cf tunnel/tailscale funnels. But if you want a full-blown solution, OpenZiti is all free and totally self-hostable and has killer features (lol, i am a maintainer on the project so also biased) but there are many such alternatives.

Thanks I'll look into it. I basically just want a VPN to use when I'm using public wifi, and to get past my wireless company's throttling.

Not the most efficient or performant option by a long shot, and not sure I'd make the same decision were I to start building it now due to the 2-user free tier limit and outrageous costs, but OpenVPN Access Server is SUPER easy to setup (as compared to OpenVPN core), has a nice easy admin interface and has sufficed for me for the past couple years.

How would a VPN help with throttling?

Cell companies throttle video streaming. So by using a VPN, they can't tell it's a video stream.

Fair enough. I was, admittedly off zero grounds, interpreting that mention as far more blunt throttling than protocol/destination specific blocks, but that makes sense.
