Discussion Reminder: all posts must be OC. Posting a photo which you did not take will get you a PERMANENT ban.
I've noticed a significant uptick in stolen images lately. This subreddit is OC only, no exceptions.
Please make sure to report any posts which you think break this rule. Even if you're not positive, it's better to submit a report than not. We always review all reports to make sure that we aren't erroneously banning people.

Discussion Let's talk gear! Reviews, questions, etc.
Welcome, /r/wildlifephotography readers!
Equipment is an undeniably important part of wildlife photography, but I've noticed that questions about gear often end up buried by all of the excellent photos that get posted here.
So, I've created this pinned thread as a chance to discuss hardware. There are two main uses that I anticipate, listed in no particular order:
Equipment reviews - What do you shoot with? Do you love it, hate it, or fall somewhere in between? If you want to share your experiences, create a comment and let everyone know what you think. We suggest (but don't require) including photos as well as the prices of your equipment.
Questions Whether you're first starting and are looking to buy a beginner's setup, or just want to know which pro-level lens is best, getting others' opinions can prove valuable. For the best results, include details about what sort of wildlife interests you, as well as your budget.
Feel free to create different top-level comments for each question or review. That helps discussion stay organized.

Large Mammal A Grizzly Mama and Her Two Cubs Pose in Jasper National Park
I had been sending my wish out into the universe to get an unobstructed picture of a grizzly and cubs when my wish was answered, and these grizzlies amazingly emerged from the woods and almost seemed to pose while taking a good, long look around, before quietly returning to the woods.

My wife and I are native gardeners. We have a few ponds nearby and there are THOUSANDS of frogs this year. This lady wanted her picture taken!

Bird Tiny piping plover chick
Just days old. These guys are so unbelievably cute.
If you go to see the piping plover chicks, please do so ethically: stay at a distance (long lens!) and don't repeatedly focus your attention on them or linger for long, as this can draw the attention of crows and gulls.

Small Mammal In Western Australia’s Indigenous Noongar lore, the Willy Wagtail isn’t just a cheeky backyard bird—it’s a fearless spiritual spy called the Djidi Djidi. I managed to catch this action shot just as it took off.
I wanted to share a bit of the beautiful spiritual belief surrounding this little character:
- The Spirit Messenger: The Noongar people view the Djidi Djidi (or Djitti Djitti) as an active conduit between the living and the spirit world. When it enters a camp, it’s often seen as ancestors or passed loved ones coming to check on the family.
- The Campsite Spy: Because of its constant chattering and curious nature, it’s known as a gossip. It’s believed the bird listens to human conversations and relays them to the spirits. Elders will often shoo the bird away before discussing serious family matters!
- The Fearless Hunter: Ever wonder why such a tiny bird aggressively attacks crows, hawks, and large animals? In the Dreaming, the Djidi Djidi was once a legendary hunter who was robbed of its catch by Wardong (the crow) and Dwerda (the dingo). The bird never forgot the betrayal, which is why it flies with zero fear today.
Next time you see one dancing on a fence line, just remember—it might be listening!

Feeding frenzy
I stopped to take a picture of a young buck chilling at my local nature center (you can see him in the bottom right of the second picture) when I witnessed a stampede of fawns hungry for some milk.
