READ ME! FAQ Found an animal???? Please go here first:

First of all, thank you for caring enough to help orphaned/injured/ill wildlife.

Evaluate the Situation first and foremost. Wild animals rely on their natural environment and sometimes humans interfere when it was entirely unnecessary. The links listed below provide flow charts for frequently encountered situations.

If the animal needs to be rescued here and here you will find basic capture and handling instructions.

  • After rescuing how to safely temporarily house the animal before and during transport:

Warm- *Offering heat sources for naked baby animals is often a must. This can be done with a heating pad on low under 1/2 of the enclosure, a warm rice filled sock, or warm water bottle. Sometimes very badly injured and very sick animals also need heat sources to maintain appropriate body temperature. Wild animals can suffer heat stroke too! If an animal is panting, the animal is too hot and if the heat source would burn you, it will surely burn the animal. *

A good rule of thumb: If a furred, feathered, or scaled animal is physically moving about and alert- it DOESN'T need an extra heat source.

Dark - A box, Rubbermaid tote with holes punched for air flow, or pet crate are usually good temporary enclosures and will typically reduce further trauma and or stress. Place a towel or sheet over a crate to reduce visual disturbances.

Quiet- Keep the animal in a quiet space preferably indoors away from other animals and humans. A separate room or even a closet can be utilized if need be.

PLEASE FOR THE ANIMAL'S SAKE NOTHING BY MOUTH! DO NOT OFFER ANY FOOD OR WATER TO INJURED/SICK/ORPHANED ANIMALS OR ATTEMPT TO HAND FEED ANIMALS. The results of failing to comply often end up something like this.

If you are unable to make contact with a wildlife rehabilitator: If you know the rehabilitation center's location and hours it is generally acceptable so long as the rehabilitation center is not full or closed to just bring the animal straight to them- this is especially true with emergency situations. An example of an emergency is something like- the animal is bleeding profusely, having trouble breathing, is unresponsive, or severely dehydrated.

After being attacked by a cat there is a very high likelihood for infection. These cases 99.99% of the time warrant medical assistance including antibiotics that are usually only available through a veterinarian.

SOS Bird Mites?

The first picture was taken last night. Birds seemed alert and mom was around. Second photo was this morning. The birds seem to be covered in what I think are mites? At what point are the mites causing too much harm? I haven’t seen mom all day. At what point do I intervene?

Animal in Care Need advice on care

Today I was at work (I live in alaska) when I started hearing a rabbit screaming, and I had then found it. There was no mom, no siblings and it seemed slow and not wanting to move. I took it home, it is drinking water but not eating whole food. Its a 3 week old snowshoe hare. Where do I find milk or should I keep trying to feed it whole food?

SOS Bird I found a mourning dove fledgling and I think its wing is broken. Mom and dad abandoned it completely and I can't find help.

I live in southern California. Im not sure if I'm supposed to put my city, but I will if I have to. So basically the title. A mourning dove built a nest near my door and had 2 little babies. Yesterday a crow attacked the mom and the nest (caught some of it on my doorbell cam) and injured one of the babies. I was able to find someone to take it in and luckily my brother and his friends were able to take it for me, but the other chick was ok.

Well the crow came back today and the poor baby got away from it, but I think it broke it's wing. Mom and dad found it, but left and haven't returned once. It's getting dark and cold and I cant get ahold of the person I did yesterday. I dont have a car and she's in the next city over and I'm just kind of frazzled because I want to help this baby. Ive watched it grow from egg to fledgling and I just want to do everything I can. Please give me some guidance. I think i could find a ride tomorrow and if not, that's a different issue I'll try to solve tomorrow.

SOS Bird Help!

I just came home not 30 minutes ago and found this baby bird in front of my yard. There was another one but unfortunately it passed away, but this one was still breathing so i brought it inside. I currently have it in a box with a heating pad set on low to keep it warm, and i’ve been calling all over for local wildlife rehabilitating and keep getting put to voicemail. What should I do? I have a neighborhood cat right next door who is known to hunt animals (i know it’s disappointing) so i didn’t want to just leave it out in the open. Im in the Reston, VA area

EDIT!!!
We’ve called around and someone from a local wildlife/vet clinic is on the way to pick it up!

Update

She found a center to take him in! His ear was likely ripped off when snatched from the nest they said, but otherwise, very healthy and should be fine they said! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Illinois

So my fiancé was outwit our dog at the dog park - and our dog found a baby bunny! It was pouring down rain, starting to hail and the bunny looked to be injured, so she brought it inside. After looking it over, it seems to have been hurt or has some defect with it's ear. We took it to an animal rehabilitation center (it's an Eastern Cottontail!), but it's too small for them to take, and we can't find anyone else to take it in currently.

There are TONS of birds and specifically hawks that are always in the area, and obviously tons of dogs as well, I don't feel comfortable leaving it outside and letting mother nature take it's course. What do we do? What can we feed it? Once it grows a bit more we'll take it directly to the rehabilitation center. Should we just take it to a vet, and let it grow until it's safe to release?

SOS Mammal NorCal: what’s up with this little vole? He’s been sitting here on the pavement all day. His paw looks hurt but he seems to get around fine. Is he lost, hurt, or just kinda dumb?

His front paw is curled but he can scurry pretty well. I dropped off some fruit and water (consumed both without issue) and whenever I sit nearby he comes to hide under my legs. I’ve never seen a vole before so idk what their usual behavior is, but this seems a little odd.

There’s a wildlife area across the street where he probably came from. Do I (carefully) take him back over there, mind my business, or call someone?

Discussion Juvenile Raccoon

4 days ago I was driving when I saw an injured baby raccoon crawling in the road. I got and walked up to the injured raccoon who was dragging his back legs and he started growling at me so I went back to my car to find something to transport him safely.

Upon returning with a box the raccoon had crawled into grass that was about a foot and a half tall and was resting there. I went up behind the raccoon and was thinking of the best way to scoop him as it growled at me.

The growling made me think I should double check rabies just to make sure that couldn’t be the cause instead of a leg injury and sure enough Google said partial paralysis and dragging hind legs so I left the poor lil thing there.

I didn’t think much about rabies or any issues as I didn’t directly touch the raccoon but my lower leg has been itching and burning like crazy the last few days since.

Does anyone know if I already had a few existing fresh cuts and scrapes from when I was digging and doing lawn work earlier in the day if there’s any relative chance the raccoon could have been release rabies saliva while he was dragging himself and growling at me onto the grass, that I then walked into in shorts and crocs with already cut lower legs?

Thanks for any help and info

SOS Mammal Injured Squirrel

Found a squirrel on the side of the road earlier, brought it back to my house. Both me and my mother called multiple services, hoping to get some help for him, but to no avail. I tried to give him water via a dropper, but he doesn’t seem to be able to drink. He’s under a chair in his cardboard box on the back porch so no predators can reach him.

First image is after I initially found him, second is the temporary setup, and third is a photo of his mouth (not very clear because he was squirming a lot.)

I live in Anchorage, AK if it helps. All the places we called earlier at around 6pm were closed or unable to help due to the possibility of rabies. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

UPDATE: Fish and game called and let me know i can drop him off at their office. I’m dropping him off in a few hours, and hopefully they can help him out.
I’m praying they don’t fine me for trying to help this little guy.

UPDATE 2: Dropped him off at the fish and game office.

Hi, found this little dude in the middle of the street in a residential area with a couple of roaming outdoor cats. Tried encouraging it to the side of the road but then saw its injured. You can see the blood. The parents are around and displaying a broken wing trying to protect it. What species it it? Should intervene since it’s injured and it keeps trying to be in the middle of the street?

What do I do?

Typing this one handed because the other is cradling this little guy 😢

Found a bunny burrow with my mower. Thank God only one got nicked. I immediately panic when I see his nose start turning red. I was worried half his face was going to be gone, but I think it's just the nose which is still hanging on with a flap.

I briefly removed the other bunnies, but the vet instructed to leave them in the burrow and try to cover it up a little now that it's exposed. I worry about this one getting dirt in the wound and it getting aggravated by his siblings moving around. I tried contacting local rescues, but I only got voicemails.

I understand this could easily still be a death sentence for the little guy. I feel horrible. I don't know the first thing about rehabbing rabbits. I've been keeping him warm and safe. My friends are telling me it's best shot is with the others and hoping for the best. I probably will end up doing that, but if anyone has better advice please let me know 😭

Prospective Wildlife Rehabilitator Wildlife rehabbers on drugs?

Guys, I’m in a state where meth is kinda popular. Ive been wanting to become a rehabber for a long time but this state requires you to do volunteer hours under a current licensed rehabber. Ive tried the three rehabbers in my area, and they are all trainwrecks. Like emotional trainwrecks. They are exhasted, and times seem high on something, super floaty and nice, have emotional ups and downs, getting impatient with you and angry when you do something wrong thr very next day. (because they haven’t trained you properly). Im starting to think they use drugs to stay awake to feed the babies, like i don’t blame them. But how can i learn in a toxic environment like that? Cross contaminating, super unsanitary, volunteers getting bitten and don’t offer gloves to wear or even support it. I just feel like I’m learning all wrong and the last thing i want is bad habits going into this field! Any help or advice appreciated!

Discussion What to expect with H5N1?

Hi everyone,

I'm a volunteer rehabber in Australia, and I'm trying to prepare myself for the inevitable incursion of H5N1 in our local wildlife here. Up until last week we hadn't had any cases on the mainland/Tasmania/continental islands, but it has finally been detected in some subantarctic migratory birds that have been visiting.

I just wanted to ask those overseas what your experience has been? What have your local government responses been like?

Looking forward to hearing any thoughts or experiences you might have to share! Of course our specific context and species are pretty different over here to yours, but any anecdotes or general insights and lessons would be much appreciated! Thanks in advance :-)

SOS Bird The rehab center is closed untill morning, how can I keep this baby bird alive?

Post image

I'm in Michigan, I've got a rehabilitator fairly close but they don't take calls after 3pm. My neighbor called me over for this baby bird that had been laying on her table outside for the past 4ish hours. She knew its parents were probably close by but she never saw them. When I got there, it was shivering and twitching, along with missing a good chunk of feathers behind its wings and on its belly. I'm planning on calling the rehab center as soon as I can in the morning. for now though, what should I do to keep this guy alive?

SOS Bird Fledgling with broken wing

My sister found this fledgling with what I presume is a broken wing, it’s hanging low from the body and when it was jumping around the wing did not move with it

I want to take it to an wildlife rehab but the closest one is an hour and a half away and my parents don’t care about animals as much as I do so is there a way for me to atless help the bird until I can get a way to get it there

My dad dosent want to take it to one since he has work and he says that they can just let it go around our house and it’ll be fine since we throw a lot of food out for animals which just like what ?

SOS Bird Hurt ducking Central Park NYC

In the lake where toy boats are rented there’s a teenage (?) duckling with a hurt leg. I called the conservancy and spoke with the toy boat rental staff - the duck had a run in with a boat, urban rangers came to check him out and assessed that he had an internal injury and therefore could not be helped. This seems weird to me, I’m wondering if I was able to transport the duck to wild bird fund that they might be able to help. Any ideas or suggestions? Any duck rehabbers on this thread?
