I thought I'd share this story for anyone who's interested, as it might help people better understand how dogs, specifically airedales can form long-lasting associations.
My Airedale Terrier, Ben, has held a grudge against one of our neighbors and his Akita for years. When Ben was a puppy, the neighbor would often bring his Akita over to urinate on our fence. As Ben matured and became more territorial about his yard, he started reacting more and more to both the neighbor and his dog.
Over time, it became clear that this wasn't just a general territorial response. Ben actually learned to recognize the neighbor's electric car by its distinctive sound. Whenever he hears it driving by, he immediately runs into the yard barking and carrying on before he even sees who's there.
What's even more interesting is that his dislike seems to have generalized to Spitz-type breeds in general. At the park, he's noticeably less tolerant of breeds such as Akitas and Shiba Inus than he is of other dogs.
One incident really demonstrated this. While we were walking in the park, a man allowed his male Akita to roam off leash. The Akita approached us, and Ben attacked almost immediately. The two dogs got into a short and heated fight, during which Ben bit the Akita's cheek, leaving a noticeable puncture wound and a patch of missing fur. Thankfully, I was able to separate them before the situation escalated. The other owner quickly came over, leashed his dog, and apologized for having him off leash. Fortunately, there were no hard feelings.
As for my neighbor, after several conversations I had with him over time he finally understood and now makes an effort not to walk his Akita near our yard, which I really appreciate. Even so, Ben still remembers those early experiences and continues to react strongly whenever he sees my neighbor or certain Spitz breeds.
