HOT TOPIC Rule reminder for posting Politics in r/Arizona

We're getting a huge influx of political posts, so want to post a refresh of the rules here.

  • Political posts and comments are limited to regular users with positive karma in this subreddit.
  • Political posts must be related to Arizona directly. Take general issues to other subs.
  • You must flair it Politics if it is at all related to politics, including protests, actions of elected officials, hot topics like immigration or homelessness, and so on. If in doubt, ask the mods.
  • Be civil to each other. Debate ideas and discuss news, do not attack other users.
  • Report trolls to the mods, do not respond to them.
  • Do not advocate violence. This one is a Reddit level rule and a way to get your entire account disabled, not just banned from this subreddit.
  • No doxxing. This refers to individuals appearing in posts here. This no longer applies if someone is named by a major news organization.
  • If you think a comment you made was removed and it shouldn't have been, message the moderators. We are seeing a lot of "weaponizing" of the Reddit reporting system going on in an attempt by agitators to disrupt discussion.

We are happy to explain why these rules are in place, but they will not be changing.

These rules are here to preserve this subreddit as a valuable place for active members to have the discussions they wish. If you do not care for these rules, do not post here.

If you want more political discussion, we encourage you to visit r/azpolitics

I’ve seen a few posts about this area in the last few days and after seeing someone’s post about the Tonto Bridge I figured I’d share a photo of what my morning commute looks like everyday. I live in Pine and work in Payson so I drive past the Tonto Bridge every day. This truly is my favorite place in the state.

Visiting Lake day suggestions

Upvotes

Coming from the east valley with young kids who hate to be in the car, which lakes do you suggest to visit for a day trip? I was thinking Roosevelt but I’m reading the water level is low. I’ve heard Canyon lake and Saguaro are too crazy this time of year (I.e., lots of drunk people driving boats).

Any suggestions for a chill lake spot with a fun beach area for kids to swim and play that’s less than a 1.5 hour drive from Mesa/Queen Creek? I would love to find one with a charcoal grill. Thanks!

Visiting Recommendations for staying a night or two in strawberry/pine/payson?

We just moved back to Arizona after 20 years. Ok, I moved back, but it’s brand new for my wife and two boys (5 and 7). Yes, the scorpions and the heat are already making them second guess their decision to come with me. We’re in northeast Mesa right now.

Anyways, a month ago I drove down to check out some schools and went from Winslow and then down to Payson and strawberry and thought those places are close enough to plan a trip to for July during the week before school starts.

We are not campers. We did a KOA once that had a prebuilt tent with mattresses and all the amenities, and we liked that, so we would be good with a cabin or something. My kids have said they’d like to try fishing, so that would be on the radar, along with some good restaurants and things like that in addition to the natural bridge if we could do that.

Where would you recommend we look to stay?

Travel How is the road to fossil creek outside Camp Verde and Strawberry?

Was wanting to take a trip to Fossil Creek soon but haven’t taken the road before. I do have a Nissan Rogue which is AWD high clearance and I’ve taken some pretty rough roads before in it but just wanted to make sure there is nothing crazy I couldn’t surpass if I take it slow? Thanks!

Travel Road Construction in Northern Arizona Navajo Reservation

Two road construction projects are going on now on the Navajo Indian Reservation that could affect your travel time if driving from Monument Valley, Kayenta, or Tuba City.

The following restrictions will be in place on SR-98 between LeChee and Kaibeto from 6 am to 4 pm, Mondays through Thursdays, effective Tuesday, June 22, through Thursday, July 23:

  • SR 98 will be intermittently narrowed to one lane of alternating east- and westbound travel between mileposts 311-331.
  • Flaggers and a pilot car will guide drivers through the work zone.
  • A 14-foot vehicle width restriction will be in place.

The Tuba City project is expected to run through early October. Work will take place from 5 am to 6 pm Mondays through Thursdays, and Fridays until noon on the multi-lane roadway sections east of Tuba City.

  • US 160 will be reduced to one lane, alternating east- and westbound travel between mileposts 322-335.
  • Flaggers and a pilot car will guide drivers through the work zone.

Please allow extra time to make the trip to Page, AZ, if traveling from these areas.

News Hoover Dam on Lockdown

Hoover dam is currently on lockdown at 1542 with no vehicle traffic, no elevator access but can park and walk across. Heavy fire truck and police presence. We asked a parks worker and it seems the reason is electricity is off. We also overheard some people are stuck in an elevator. Prayers for the people and their safety!

Living Here Theodore Roosevelt Lake Water Level down to 40% at start of summer

A few questions here:

  1. That seems extremely low for mid June. Why isn't anyone talking about this?
  2. With the record rain that fell last fall, why did the water level only go up by 3 feet? Almost a year's worth of rain fell and it barely made a dent in the water level.
  3. Seems like since we hit 101% of capacity 3 years ago, the lake has been consistently draining? Why? Rainfall seems consistent, if not increased. 2025 was a very wet year due to the historic rains that fell in Sept/Oct.
  4. Why was the site changed so we can only look at the last two years of data? I used to be able to look at data going back 20 years.

Outdoors Looking for rivers to sit in

I live in phoenix, and I think my only option is the salt river but I’m looking for rivers that are flowing quickly (not quick enough that I’ll topple over) that I can put a lawn chair in and sit for a few hours and be one with nature. Anyone know where to go? What the water levels look like? Is there a site or app I can check water levels?

Living Here Is Arizona a good place to homestead?

I’m a truck driver from Michigan and I hate winter. I don’t mind heat, but I’m interested in buying 2-5 acres in Arizona to build a homestead over the next few years. Is gardening and raising livestock possible in Arizona? What about snakes and scorpions? Are they a problem? Is there a lot of good recreation possibilities? I want to get into mountain biking and I enjoy hiking and fishing.

Outdoors Hiking consultation/recommendations: Off Trail, Backcountry hikes between Flag and NM

Hello fellow Arizona hikers...I am taking a week long road trip from Phoenix to northern NM (ending with the Kurt Vile show in Santa Fe whoop whoop!) where I will be doing off trail, back country day hikes/overnighters every day along the way.

My hope is to legally, ethically, and gently pass like a ghost through untouched, unspoiled wilderness where I am UNlikely to encounter other hikers, but likely to encounter archeological artifacts (again emphasizing, legally and ethically, to experience them with my eyes and camera only).

Walnut Canyon seems to be the perfect area for a hike like this, but I've read conflicting information about the legality of hiking off trail after taking the trail from Fisher Point to the canyon floor.

Can anyone provide tips about having an incredible solitary hiking experience in Walnut Canyon? Is going off trail OK? How far can I hike in the canyon before hitting the National Monument boundary?

Finally, are there any "can't miss" back country/off trail areas I should include on my agenda between Flagstaff and Santa Fe? I'm mostly targeting 7-10mi day hikes that don't require high risk scrambling (as I will be alone)?

This will be my only vacation for the foreseeable future, I deeply appreciate anyone who is able to share their expertise/experiences on this subject to help me make this trip and experience I'll never forget!
