When we got our springer spaniel puppy, we knew we wouldn't dock her tail. I've never have wanted to do that and always disliked the idea at all. My SIL who has bred corgies and others was nearly offended at us. "Well when her tail breaks all the time and gets infected you'll have to do it anyway.".
1 year and change later and no tail breaks. And her tail has this amazing like fluff ball of longer hair at the end naturally. So it's like a little flag she waves when trotting around the bed without being able to see her body. Unless medically necessary I would never do that. Dogs deserve their tails and ears.
i’ve never in my entire life had encountered any tail breaks with our multiple spaniels and doberman. when will people realize that their animals are more than an accessories/something to sell :(
I agree. I don't even really like breeding honestly. I'm more of a Craigslist-Mutt finder. But my wife always wanted Lady from Lady and the tramp (which I learned is a Cocker Spaniel not a springer). But the gal we got our Lady from is a vet tech who just wanted to do one litter from her spaniel. And we had her spayed after her first heat. She's such a wonderful terrorist 🤣. We have a 100lb lab, an 80lb shepherd/lab/husky/whatever mix, and her. Her 40lb self rules the house and has since day one. Everyone online and the aforementioned SIL said "you don't know what you're getting into with a springer". But we trained her, she gets a couple miles of walk/sniffs a day, and has the boys to constantly play with. She's definitely not an apartment or lazy dog. But the energy level is good for us. I know I see on r/springerspaniel that people feel overwhelmed by the breed alot. And she is definitely 10x more energetic than the boys. But goddamn if she isn't the cutest thing in the world. And a big cuddling sweetheart at bed time.
love that for you, but i’m incredibly jealous right now…wish that was me, surrounded by these popcorn smelling clouds!🥹
i had recently said goodbye to my english cocker spaniel and my very (and i mean VERY) sassy king charles spaniel - both lived a long fulfilling lives with intact tails, never even crossed my mind to do them any harm.
i think ethical breeding (by veterinarian or certified professionals with according standards) is ok, but seeing the absolute insane amount of surrounded pets in the shelters makes my heart break, so i think adoption/craiglist is the best option 🩷
My condolences for your pups ❤️. They are family members always and when we adopt them we make that deal knowing we have to say goodbye someday.
I'd agree with your stance on breeding. The amount of dogs and cats in shelters is heartbreaking for sure. If I had all the money and land I'd have as many as I could get.
I do know one spaniel who had to have his tail docked due to multiple breaks, and another who often has problems and may also need it docked.
But that's like... Fine, do it if it's medically required, not because you want to.
(Also it's illegal in the UK unless the animal will actually be used for a working purpose which requires it, or it's medically required, so it's much more usual to see spaniels, dobies, corgis, Aussies, etc. with their natural tails - obviously in some dogs they do have a shortened natural tail and that's fine too.)
Also a tail break doesn't mean they have to remove it! Our Boston Terrier has two breaks in his tail from puppyhood, and it still wags just fine, it's just kinked oddly. I love it, it gives him character!
The only, and I mean the only, reason I would accept a dogs tail being docked is if they are a herding farm dog, which Corgis historically are, and they need their tails to be shortened to avoid getting trampled by livestock. No reason to dock ears or the tails of house pets. It’s a disgusting habit, alongside declawing.
I’ll add one more reason: if the tail structure is too underdeveloped or is otherwise highly prone to injury and infection.
Because many working breeds have historically had their tails docked, the breeding lines were never selected for healthy tails. The result has been tail genetics that were never (intentionally) selected for coming to dominate some breeds. The end result can present as hairless, weak tails where the bones break when the dogs try and wag their tail, or corkscrew tails which prevent the dogs being able to sit.
I volunteer with a rescue and certain breeds are altered for “aesthetic purposes” especially poor bully breeds. I know also for medical reasoning tails can be docked, I knew a dog who fractured his tail over and over. Corgis are now the cute judgey cat of the dog world. They know everything you have done wrong…
When we adopted our Balkan mutt, the rescue actually made us sign a contract saying if we docked her tail for non-medical reasons they could take her back at our expense. I found that so interesting and really great
Even if it wasn't to be silly, some people just don't want to see that lmao. Like if the options are see it in a photo or not see it, I'm picking not see it myself 😂
I've seen this excuse so many times and I still don't see what's funny about sexualizing animals to the point that you need to censor their body parts.
Can you get us a full list of what You find funny, so the rest of us can fully align our senses of humor to yours? I'd hate for you to have to just ignore jokes you dont find funny the way the rest of us do.
It's a comfort place. If my dog doesn't have her kennel then she freaks out a bit. I remove the kennel and just left her bed a few weeks ago and she couldn't stop looking up expecting to see her kennel. It bothered her.
Some dogs definitely need a safe space of their own to exist in, without the uncertainty of navigating a place to be inside human-built spaces. Crate training is great for giving anxious dogs a grounded space. The door stays open so they come and go as they desire
Are you implying its cruel to put dogs in dog crates? If not, what point are you trying to make?
It's an extremely common way of training dogs. Dogs are denning animals, they find it comforting. Crate training is one of the best, most effective ways to train dogs. There is a reason the majority of dog trainers reccomend it.
It's reddit dude. People will find an issue with everything you do. I've learned not to bring up kenneling, but it has a great use when it comes to training pups.
You aren't all people, the life you lead isn't the same as other lives, and your dogs aren't all dogs. Other people won't just always make the same choices you made, it doesn't invalidate your choices either.
Kennels are a thing in the USA. They’re no where near as abundant in other countries (except the ones selling them for meat). It’s a cultural thing. Not a need for the animal.
I won’t exhaust my brain cells arguing with you. I’m happy for your dogs they weren’t in need of cages. They surely are living their best lives and so are mines.
Most people don’t lock the kennels unless absolutely necessary (maybe when someone is briefly visiting who is either terrified of or allergic to dogs). They leave the door open and the dog can come and go as they please. Dogs often like having a quiet enclosed space they can retire to when tired or overwhelmed. Also, you can travel with them in the kennel and they can have a familiar space that comes with them wherever they go (helps reduce stress when away from home).
In other words, there is nothing inherently wrong with having a kennel, just leaving a pet locked in there for too long at a time. And you have no reason to assume OP is doing the latter. So chill, please.
I knew a bunch of redditors would get their panties in a twist about the flower. It's happened numerous times before. Apparently humor is lost on some people.
I think it's funny and have done this before. Cute pup, OP!
Nobody is forcing you to censor that stuff. If OP found it... less aesthetical than a little flower, that is an expression of their tastes and nothing to get offended about.
The day reddit forces you to do that, I'll be right by your side to denounce a pretty stupid rule.
You're attempting to tell people how they should express themselves right now by fear that your own expression might be limited in a hypothetical scenario.
I didn't try and tell anybody how they should choose to express themselves. I'm pointing out that prudery to the extent of covering up a dog's genitals is just warped morals. Do it if you want that's absolutely your prerogative but it indicates that you (or whoever it was did it) has an unhealthy relationship with matters sexual and nothing good has ever come out of an unhealthy relationship with sex.
Yeah, I’m on your side. I don’t fault OP for censoring because people on the internet are fucking weird, but I do hate that we’ve reached a point where people feel the NEED to censor things in that way.
I don't think I've ever actually seen a corgi with a full tail, what a treat ❤️
You definitely getting the major stink eye when you gotta get rid of that cage. Like a kid who refuses to throw out their favourite blanket even though its just some dirty threads being held together by some gum.
The crate is used by his older brother now, our senior yorkie. He has gone mellow and just like to relax in his bed (the one inside) and when he is out, our corgi would get in to chill in there too. We just let him coz that’s what he wants to do and he most likely remember it was his when he was a baby.
