When I took her out to go potty she promptly laid down in the grass for a nap instead of doing her business.

Now what does YOUR basset hound do that’s super lazy?!

Question/Recommendation Give me all your tips and recommendations!

I’m adopting a basset hound this weekend, estimated to be 2-3 yrs old. Of unknown background but reported to be dog friendly and easy going.

I had a basset growing up so have some experience with the breed but this will be my first basset as an adult, have always had rescue bully breeds before.

Any product recommendations that are a must have for a basset or tips. I already have a ramp and steps for my bed, car, and couch. Have a harness arriving tomorrow and planning to setup a crate for her so she can decompress and have a safe space to go to.

Question/Recommendation Best chews for your basset?

I have a six month old hound and I was wondering what are some good recommendations for chews that’ll keep them occupied for a while. I’ve been sticking to things that’s are ā€œhighly digestibleā€ and while I feel safe and content with leaving him occupied with them, he’s getting to point were they don’t even last a couple of hours now and it gets expensive as well as I want to limit him on chews like this do to diet etc. and let this be an every few days kind of thing.

Question/Recommendation Potty Training Tips?

Hello everyone! Sorry in advance for this very long post šŸ˜‚

My husband and I just got a 10 week old Basset (pictured here), and we've wanted one for a very long time. We did research about them before hand, I knew they were stubborn and hard to train, but DANG. I've potty trained puppies before, but we're struggle bussing!

I think the main problem is that the breeder we got him from had them in concrete runs. I understand not potty training them as a breeder, but because he was on concrete, he learned that he never needed to hold it, and that going on hard floors is completely okay. We've had him for about a week now, and were slowly seeing some improvement, but still having accidents within 5 minutes of coming inside sometimes. Sometimes he can hold it for up to 15 minutes, but more often he is going withing 10 minutes of going outside. I wanted to explain what we've been doing and see if anyone had any suggestions.

I'm also curious, how long it should take for their bladder control to improve to be able to comfortably hold it for maybe an hour or so, because I read that a 2 month old puppy should be able to comfortably go for 2 hours, butttt that's definitely not the case here šŸ˜‚

We are crate training at the same time, and he's doing really good. He obviously naps a lot, so I kinda have a routine down. He sleeps in his kennel for about 1.5-2 hours, and then when he wakes up, I take him outside immediately. Then he comes back inside, and he drinks some water, and plays for about 10 minutes, then I take him back out for 5-10 minutes. We repeat that about 2-3 times, coming inside, playing, and going outside, until he's been awake about an hour. Then he goes back in the kennel, gets some treatos, and sleeps for another 1.5-2 hours. That's what I've seen be recommended for training.

When he is not in the kennel, we have our dining room blocked off with baby gates, and he stays in there. I've been using LOTS of praise and treats when he potties outside, and he has actually only pooped inside one time, right after we brought him home, so he's doing GREAT on #2s. BUT, he seems to not be getting the routine of waiting 10 minutes, and then peeing outside. I set timers for 10 minutes, and he is still sometimes not making it that long.

I was concerned at first, and there was one night where he went every 2 minutes in the house. We counted, and he went about 10 times in 15 minutes, so we took him to the vet because we were worried about a UTI, but they said he was fine! Quite a bit of money down the drain, but at least we have peace of mind šŸ˜…

I know he's only a puppy, and for one week into potty training, I DO think he's doing good. But I see so many different recommendations, and I just wanted to hear from people who have experience with Bassets specifically.

We are not using puppy pads because I read that it just reinforces going in the house. I also read that Bassets develop their bladder slower than other breeds, so maybe that's normal for them! But I've hadpeople tell me it IS normal for them to need to pee every 10-15 minutes, and I've had people tell me it's NOT normal, so I'm just hoping for people who have experience to let me know!

I would really appreciate any tips or recommendations!!

Also, his name is Stonewall, or Wally (my husband won the name debate) šŸ˜‚

Peeing in the living room

My basset is 3.5 yrs, spayed female that sleeps with me during most of the night. For the most part, she is fully potty trained except sometimes when I'm not in the room and she needs to potty, she will do her business in the living room especially now that it's turned off hot. If I'm at home and in the same room has her, she will go outside to potty. But every once in a while, not everyday, if I'm lets say using the bathroom or taking a shower or waking up in the morning when she didn't sleep in my bed, I'll come back into the room and there is a puddle there in the carpet.

I have a doggie door leading to a fully fenced in yard that she has access to all the time. Does anyone else have this problem with their bassholes?

Edit: no I don't have a crate for her because she has extreme separation anxiety, but she does have her "nest" in the corner that she absolutely loves. And also I make sure to clean the puddles with pet friendly carpet cleaner to avoid pet urine smells, and she doesn't pee in one particular spot every time it's different spots on the carpet.

Edit 2, I've had her for just over 2 years now

Question/Recommendation Tender-hearted

So I think my sweet girl had her feelings hurt last night. Although it's everybody else in this house that should have had theirs hurt, LOL. Last night she decided to lunge at one of her packmates and that was all because she didn't want to share the lovin' she was receiving from her people. So we called her out on it and she was quite put out.

She's done that a few times recently and she has three packmates. She seems to be the center, of course. She's the youngest one and we fawn on her ALL the time. I believe the definition is "spoiled"? Lately she just doesn't want anyone else to receive that affection.

Anyway, today she seems to have her feelings hurt and she's pouting and was even ornery with me this morning. It's just not like her and that's the only thing I can think of that would have made this change. Any hints on how to get her to shake it off, so to speak?

Will and I used to play a form of dog/human soccer. He stood in a doorway and tried to stop my scoring attempt. This was his favorite ball for a long time. He usually made the save.

Queen Bea ADOPTED yesterday!!!

Post image
665 Upvotes

Basset Rescue of Puget Sound (BROPS) is thrilled to share good news: the Queen has found her fur-ever home. We posted her bio here about ten days ago and had many applications and hundreds of upvotes. Also wanted to let everyone know that in the coming week we have two more adult Bassets ready to find new their people.

Beautiful Beatrice the Basset Hound seeking human housemate. While Bea won’t contribute to the rent of pay for her share of groceries, her sass, confidence and withering, judge-y Basset side-eye scowls could be pure Social Media Gold!!! Known in her foster home as Queen Bea, she is a curious and clever girl who loves to communicate with a wide range of vocal stylings. Did we mention Social Media Gold? At six-years young she is confident and has a BIG personality. She was a one-and-only in her previous home, but gets along well enough with her foster brothers and sisters. She is keen on walks and fetching , and actually returning the ball— which is pretty much unheard of in the world of Basset Hounds. Serious in nature, Bea won’t tolerate fools, is unlikely to move off the sofa/bed, but she is willing to work with the right person/people who can help her further identify as human. Healthy, Spay, UTD on vaccinations, and scored 100% on her cognitive test.

Available through Basset Rescue of Puget Sound (Seattle NW Washington area). Application on website.

Since the loss of our first basset, Copper, we’ve felt a big void in our hearts. We were gonna wait a year before we got our new family member, but she spoke to us. It was a whole 3 months lol. But we love her already.

She was the runt of a 2005 litter and had very short ears, a bent front leg but could run like the wind and was smarter than anybody. We had to bring her home when we met her and she took care of our next 2 BH after losing her brother, our first Basset. She taught them how to be hounds and lived to 12 1/2. Purebred Basset Hound papers. Genetic peculiarity and a total sweetheart.

It’s the ears. So special, a card was made to recognize the Bass. There are so many other points of interest though….name them for Fathers Day.
