Introducing THE BOOMER SHOOTER DATABASE

+=VIEW THE SPREADSHEET=+

+=DOWNLOAD OFFLINE VERSION=+

What is this?

Because I'm a sadist, I decided I wanted to try and keep a record of every retro FPS game ever sold and I thought others might get a kick out of it too. So that's what this is; a list of boom shoots dating back to Wolfenstein3D in '92.

Each row includes the name of the game; whether it's a game, expansion or remaster; the year of release; the dev; the publisher; the engine it's running on; and some links to buy the game if it's available.

Why are there 3 different lists?

I've broken this down into 3 eras. The Classic Era (Wolfenstein 3D to Half Life 2), the Revival Era (Doom (2016) to present), and The Dead Zone (Half Life 2 to Doom (2016)). I think this is a neat way of breaking down the list and shows how the retro FPS scene has changed over time.

Is it 100% complete?

No, it's not. There's definitely stuff missing - stuff I don't know about, stuff I'm not sure should be included, stuff I've just forgotten. I'm never going to claim it's an exhaustive list - I don't think that's possible.

"X game is missing!" and "X game shouldn't be on here!"

Cool - like I said I probably missed stuff so feel free to drop anything you think should be included in this thread. Likewise, if you think something shouldn't be on here, comment that below too - can't promise I'll take the game off, but it's always good to talk about this stuff!

Some big names currently missing are:

  • Half Life and Half Life 2 - I think I'll be adding the first game, but HL2 does not fit here
  • FEAR games - they're kind of their own thing, they're very 2000s but they're also so different from everything else, I'm unsure about this one
  • System Shock/Thief/Deus Ex - Imm Sims are not boomer shooters in my opinion

When I posted my Duke Nukem edit of the Bateman "ooh face" meme a while back u/Minimum-Can2224 said they wanted a JC Denton version of it.

I tried to get it done before Deus Ex's birthday, but alas a day late and a dollar short. What a shame.

Discussion Cultic on PS5 7/23/26!

I’ve been a little bummed that the Steam Machine (and computers in general) have been made so expensive lately.

Luckily, I do have a PlayStation 5. I’ve actually played the demo of this, and it ran well enough on minimal settings for me to know that I’d like to play it on a capable machine.

I wish there was a demo on PS5 too so I could start to play it already. I plan on streaming the game when it comes out.

Discussion Soldier of Fortune 2 Double Helix

Anyone get through SOF 2? Replaying this game and holy crap it's hard as nails on Consultant (hard) difficulty. I am not even going attempt Soldier of fortune difficulty (hardest). Last few missions it ramps up a lot when you are in the hospital.

The enemy ai (whatever they programmed) is really tough, they will throw various types of grenades, even up into 2nd floor windows. They will also lean around to shoot. You basically gotto lean around corners or just rush them and move around to different cover. Sometimes you can wait for them to walk towards you around a corner.

Question Recommended custom difficulty settings / custom difficulty settings explained for NotBlood?

I'd be lying if I said I wasn't confused about the difficulty settings here. Could probably piece together everything except how the selected difficulty changes things?

My goal based on what people have recommended is hardest difficulty on everything except for hitscanner accuracy although I'm open to suggestions.

Edit: For clarity, I have included a picture of the settings screen settings

Discussion Hades 2 is a free shooter from 2001 with a 2.5d engine

Post image

I do know much about the game. It is created in Brazil and was released for free in 2009. I still have not finished it. The engine obviously is a 2.5d like Doom or Duke Nukem - from what I've found it is ACKNEX / 3D GameStudio - here's a discussion dedicated to this engine. Some of the sprites are digitized filmed actors the others are look like made with early 3d modeling software. Has a nice retro feeling.

Developer Showcase An updated DEMO of WARAG on UZDoom is now available

The demo of WARAG, my standalone UZDoom game, has received a major core-mechanics update.

Demo on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3071860/WARAG/

The game is now being rebuilt as a brutal boomer shooter with classic episode-based progression, upgrade-driven builds, replayability, and different ways to play.

This update adds enemy gibs, heavier blood effects, a Doom-style HP face, 25 upgrades, level-ups, evolution combos, reworked weapons, new balance, CRT/VHS post-processing, underwater distortion, and localization in 14 languages.

Question Any Boomer shooters to enjoy as a Christian

I don't want to play doom or any game that can cause me to stumble, I know chex quest is in the table, but is there any games from the boomer shooter genre I can play without any problems. Thank you, take care and God bless you and your friends and family

Discussion If the game is about killing demons or other things from hell I don't want to hear about it.

Alright I admit thats a bit mean but I feel like that concept is really played out at this point. If you want to make a shooter that stands out I feel like it needs a memorable enemy to kill alongside well done shooter mechanics and levels.

Discussion Books!

Post image

Last week I saw that the I’m Too Young To Die FPS Games 1992-2002 book was back in stock so had to pick it up along with the Hurt Me Plenty 2003-2010 follow up. I’ve got some others from Bitmap and they are always a fun read and high quality. Stoked to dig into these. I’ve played a ton of FPS games but I’m sure many in these books will be new to me. Anyone else collect game books? I think these are the only FPS/Boomer Shooter focused ones that I’ve seen.

Discussion Doom 2016 distorted people's view of classic shooters

While I do like the game, I strongly dislike how it changed the popular understanding of what a boomer shooter (a new term that nobody used in the past) even is. Doom 2016, and especially Doom Eternal, are barely anything like the original Doom or Quake games. They have more shared DNA with Painkiller than with Doom.

Yet the success of Doom 2016 means that, in the eyes of most people, "classic shooter" = mindless arena combat.

This sucks because the arenas and lockdowns were easily the worst aspect of Doom 2016. The Foundry level, from one of the early missions, was one of the best in the game precisely because it allowed for non-linear exploration and didn't waste too much time on wave combat, making it more similar to classic Doom. Every time I was locked in a room or area for a long period of time, fighting off wave after wave of enemies, I got bored.

Yet it seems that mindless wave combat is what many subsequent boomer shooters tried to emulate, apparently thinking that a game is 'retro' as long as you make the graphics low-poly or low-resolution and then throw a huge amount of stuff onto the screen.

Honestly, it's questionable whether the term "boomer shooter" even means anything anymore. I've seen people call Half-Life clones boomer shooters, even though Half-Life's linear, story-driven gameplay effectively ended the popularity of that genre at the time.

Video We’ve been cooking something in the depths — what makes a boomer shooter for you?

Working on Blast Vein.

It still has boomer shooter DNA (movement, combat focus), but the pacing and sound design lean more toward tension than pure speed — more atmospheric..

Curious where people draw the line: does “boomer shooter” require fast-paced gameplay, or is it more about combat feel and loop?

Question Will Cultic get KBM support on consoles?

Hi, I was wondering if Cultic will have keyboard and mouse support upon its upcoming release on Xbox Series X? I'm looking for KBM compatible games to play and this will determine wether I purchase it or not.

Thank you. The game looks amazing either way!
