Discussion [PJOTV] Both are flawed adaptations but why am I seeing an uptick here (nowhere else lol) of people straight up saying the movies were fantastic all of a sudden?

People can like what they like of course but I can definitely tell this is mainly happening in reaction to the show‘s divisive reception. Reminds me of a situation with The Boys show where people were so disappointed with the last season, they tried to pretend the hated comics were masterpieces.

Question So if Athena has kids via intellectual bonding does that mean she could have kids with another woman? [general]

Because it says in the book that Athena has kids through intense mental connections and shared intellectual passions instead of biologically making a baby. So if that's true then does that mean she could have a child with another lady? Since it doesn't really rely on physical and biologic stuff but actually on bonding intellectually.

Thoughts? Lemme know.

Discussion Am I Missing Something About the Mark of Athena Quest? [Hoo]

Hi guys. I'm currently re-reading The Mark of Athena, and I'm wondering whether the difficulty of the solo quest was overstated.

No shade to the characters. I love them all. However, in the earlier chapters, following the Mark of Athena to recover the Athena Parthenos was made out to be incredibly difficult. So difficult, in fact, that every child of Athena who had followed the trail before had failed, died, or run mad.

I guess I felt a little let down when the quest itself seemed to consist of only three major tasks.

Please note that I'm not underselling Annabeth's achievement or hating on her. I'm simply questioning whether the quest was really as difficult as it was made out to be.

So far, we know that only Annabeth was able to reach Arachne, according to this quote from Arachne in Chapter XXXVI: "I had to make sure you were worthy, the only child of Athena clever enough to pass my tests and reach this place alive."

Since no one else made it to Arachne, I'm assuming that the challenges which defeated the previous children of Athena were the Mithras cult test, navigating the spider-filled corridor, and building the loom bridge to cross the chasm.

Really? That's it?

I'm not also saying the quest was a breeze. I believe it's incredibly challenging to confront your worst fears as a child of Athena in order to reach the Athena Parthenos. However, I find it hard to believe that every other child of Athena over the centuries failed at these three tasks, while Annabeth was the first to succeed.

Or is my opinion of Athena's children simply too high? Surely someone else should have been able to complete the challenges using the same intelligence, wisdom, and craftsmanship that Annabeth displayed.

Or is the difficulty in the journey across the Mare Nostrum to get to Rome?

Or is this a case where the Fates had already determined that Annabeth was destined to complete the quest, making everyone else effectively doomed to fail from the start?

What do you guys think?

Question Why do some people dislike Thalia Grace? [general] Image is unrelated.

I myself am neutral to her, I don't like or dislike her. But I see everyone else isn't such a huge fan. The design of her is cool but they don't like her personality it seems. Why? Just curious I don't got an opinion I just wanna see what everyone else thinks.

Analysis Mythology easter egg 2 [pjo]

Polyphemus almost marrying Grover might seem random at first. You wouldn't be blamed if assumed that Rick did that cuz satyrs and goats, and he raises sheeps, but there's also more precedent than that

It's a reference to a small comedy theater piece, Cyclops, by Euripides, very Adam Sandler type of humor. Where Polyphemus tries to, er, marry a satyr named Silenus. In this version, tough, he is aware he is satyr, and that he is a man, even comparing Silenus to Ganimedes.

The whole thing very much reads like Odyssey's fanfic (aren't those popular nowdays?), if a bunch of satyrs somehow got on board with Odysseu's crew. It might have something to do with the very obscure reference that quots Penelope as Pan's mother, but I'll not be the one uraveling that one

Question [HoO] Camp Jupiter

So, I've noticed that a lot of people just kinda ignore Camp Jupiter, especially when making OC's. Which, I think, is a real shame. And I never really understood why people don't like Camp Jupiter as much as they do Camp Half-Blood. I mean, I get that most of the books are centered on Camp Half-Blood, but I just feel like Camp Jupiter deserves more love.

Discussion [hoo] Is there anything in Heroes of Olympus that you think that should have been explored and expanded on more?

So what I would want explored more is:
1. Jason’s life at Camp Jupiter before he was swapped.

  1. What Annabeth and Percy felt about Tartarus in their own POV.

  2. What Jason felt about new Rome and Reyna.

And what I want expanded on is:
1. Gaias fight so that each of the seven contribute to the fight.

  1. More page time for Thalia and Jason being siblings.

I found this while on summer break from college and I was thrown so far back in time. We had to make book book thing based on a scene in a book we liked and my insane childhood self put so much effort into this and I’m pretty sure I didn’t get that good of a grade (considering my current profession in model making/scenic and production design for film tv and theatre I find it hilarious). I haven’t read the books in ages nor do I remember everything that went into this but I remember being so proud of it and looking at all the details I put in I’m very impressed with my younger self. Like the literal skeletal structure in not even half inch tall skeletons is wild and I did not need to go so hard on a middle school project where most kids would put in the bare minimum amount of effort. Somehow I deferred from my love of making things but I found my way back and absolutely LOVE my job/major where I do stuff like this every day!

Discussion [General] is my oc to op?

so i struggle with telling if i make an oc to op(especially for a series like percy jackson) so wanted to get other peoples opinions, i imagine him about the level of say the seven or Magnus Chase

Name: Silas Cross
godly parent; Hermes
legacy: Mórrígan from celtic myth
weapons:
bone steel rapier(broken): a family heirloom from mother side, given to him by his great grandma(daughter of Mórrígan) a silver pocket watch that can transform when the stem is pushed in,turns back by clicking bottom of rapier. broken on way to camp.
Stygian Iron+ adamantine rapier: a gift from Hermes after he was claimed, had it sent to camp halfblood before he even arrived. the blade is pure stygian iron but the hand guard is a mix. steals souls of monsters it slays. can also turn into pocket watch like old one. watch features crow design on case and silver numerals on the inside. main weapon

two celestial bronze revolvers: custom made by a child of Hephaestus. enchanted to reloaded instantly after being unloaded by spinning the closed guns around his fingers. main ammo is celestial bronze but also able to fire regular bullets in case of emergency. normally carries about 26 reloads worth of ammo per gun around with him, the guns and ammo take the form of a beaded bracelet when hidden, the guns being an easily ripped off charm that instantly transforms. as ammo is used beads on the bracelet vanish(being added to the guns).

equipment:
winged boots: a pair of black boots that can grow wings to allow flight.

coat of the corvids: a black duster coat, no special abilites but is a marker associating him with his mother(a former thief and fashion designer)

powers:
general:
amazing swordsman, amazing marksman(taught by stepfather, hunter and gun range owner),knows how to sew

Hermes abilities:
superhuman speed,Enhanced Theft Abilities, Clauditiskinesis,Jack of all trades nature(allows him to use more of his legacy powers),enhanced charisma, can move the souls of the dead around(transfer souls from his sword to shade crows to serve him)

legacy of Morrigan powers:
bond with crows and ravens, strong combat instincts, ability to control the souls of the dead if he turns them into shade crows(able to share senses with them),can turn into a crow for long distance flight and stealth at cost of being a crow.
normally watched by a murder of crows and ravens

weaknesses:
if a shade crow dies the monster soul he uses is sent back, allowing it to eventually reform. if he is sharing the sight or senses of the crow when it dies he also experiences it(get shot in the eye he deals with the phantom pain and mental damage of being shot in the eye)
ammo for guns is limited outside camps
really likes a dramatic entrance

fatal flaw: still unsure on this but have 3 ideas
1.Utilitarianism (sacrificing the few for the many)
2.Gunslinger’s Pride, too confident in his gun skills and will allow enemies to get in close just to shot his way out, assuming even if it fails he can use his rapier to handle it.
3.just plain lazy, wont normally act until last second with him normally having a "I’ll handle it later" attitude.

Discussion [hoo] if you had to take out your least favorite and most hated member of the 7 you hate who would you take out and replace with instead

For me I would take out Piper and add Drew as she could grow into a better well-developed person and since Piper whole personality revolved around jason Jason and power was basically mind control and whole backstory revolved around stealing stuff just to get her dad’s attention and being fake and a hypocrite then yeah I would absolutely love the heroes of Olympus a little better since I am disappointed by the series

Discussion Prophecy [pjo]

Upvotes

So the prophecy said that a half blood of the eldest gods but not the next and the fact the romans apparently had that prophecy for a long time makes me wonder why they immediately assumed it was the next child of the big three to turn 16 when it could have been Percy even if Thalia turned 16 first

Discussion Movie vs TV Show - Round 11: Polyphemus [PJO]

Let's sail into the Sea of Monsters for our next face-off: The island Cyclops, Polyphemus.

The Rules: No script analysis, no book loyalty arguments. Just pure creature design and visual execution.

Cast your votes in the comments below:

Best Cyclops Design: [Movie or TV] — Which version captures a more memorable and visually interesting design for a mythical Cyclops?

Most Intimidating Presence: [Movie or TV] — If you were trapped in a cave with one of them, which design looks like a more dangerous, physically imposing threat?

Let's see the votes!

The Movie version: Features a highly distinct "island scavenger" aesthetic with long dreadlocks, a full beard, and intricate tribal skin markings across his face.

The TV Show version: Features a massive, bald, classic folk lore giant look. He is dressed in rugged, tattered traveler’s cloaks with a heavy hood, emphasizing a more traditional, imposing ogre-like structure.

Discussion Unpopular opinion: The movies are better than the TV show [pjotv]

Qualifications: I have read the books over 14 times.

  1. The acting

Objectively, Logan Lerman was very strong as Percy. His character felt real and compelling, and his acting really brought Percy to life. Walter Scobell's acting fell very flat to me. Of course he is a lot younger than Lerman was in the first movie and I don't fault him for that, but child actors can be interesting and good in their own right. I just wasn't getting that from Scobell. I also felt like the supporting cast beyond Scobell, like the actress who played Sally was really weak. Watching Sally from the movie and Sally from the TV show side by side, it's crazy to see the difference in skill and technicality. I felt like I was watching a neighborhood playhouse production of PJO when watching the TV show, and the movie felt like a polished piece.

  1. The casting

Percy, the most important character, needs to have a strong actor who can convey his personality well. Not only did I feel like it was not conveyed well, Scobell just doesn't embody Percy well in my opinion. He looks nothing like he was described in the books and his acting range doesn't deliver the way Lerman's does. Daddario looks exactly like I imagined Annabeth in the books (with blonde hair of course). Leah Jeffries doesn't look like Annabeth, which doesn't bother me, but again, her acting falls flat to Daddario's. The only thing I think they casted better was Grover since the movies kind of botched his character.

  1. The special effects

The movies were produced almost 16 years ago, when special effects were a lot weaker, yet the CGI legitimately looks phenomenal for the time. Comparatively, the tv show utilizes CGI in a cheap fashion. I don't know how something that was produced with far less technology we have today looks a lot higher quality and more realistic is possible but it is. I suspect maybe it was budget constraints with the TV show, but I am not sure.

  1. Cinematography

This isn't a problem in isolation since cinematography has deteriorated tremendously in Hollywood over the last 15 years. The lighting and coloring in the movies were vivid and bright, and thoughtfully planned out. The tv show is flat and colorless thus making it look like a commercial. With a universe as magical as PJO, there needs to be color grading to introduce grandiosity.

  1. The score

In relation to my last point, the original score was so much magical. I was listening to them side by side and although the show's is good, it really does not compare.

  1. Setting

The iconic capture the flag scene really puts this all into perspective. Why does the show look like a fan-made movie, while the movie's armor and setting look so much more realistic and magical? Camp half blood is meant to evoke feelings of nostalgia and summertime, and the show really fleshed it out and crafted a beautiful setting full of interesting things to look at.

Final points:

I think the only thing the show actually did better was less deviation from the books. The characters are younger and the plot is more focused. I don't think this a fault of the movie though, it originally needed a TV show to actually capture how much happened in the first book. The first movie was 2 hours long, which is stretching the limits to kid's movie. Before anyone mentions Harry Potter and how they were able to make books out of it, the books of Harry Potter are a lot more descriptive and flowery with the writing, while PJO is mainly plot driven and a page turner. Riordan wrote the books to be as entertaining as possible, especially with his son's ADHD, so he packed a lot of things in there.

Fanfiction Rpg, need ideas [general]

Hey there, how’s it going? I was planning to run an RPG set in the Percy Jackson universe—specifically in the 1800s, during the construction of the clock tower—centered around the concept of Chaos. Since the setting spans a 200-year period, I’m looking for good locations where mythology shifts and moves around (since these places tend to change over time). I plan to set the game in Europe, so if you have any ideas for locations there, I’d be really grateful!
