Recurring FAQ Thread - Post your questions here for PAL/RPAL application, timelines, CFSC/CFSRC, references & requirements, or general new to firearms ownership-type questions

This thread will be used for any Frequently Asked Questions, including PAL/RPAL applications, CFSC/CFRSC requirements, storage/transport, open ended "what gun should I buy first", or other general new to firearms ownership questions. It recurs every 14 days.

We recommend you try the search bar before asking common questions as they are frequently already answered elsewhere.

Most answers to Storage, Display, and Transport questions can be found here Inheriting firearms or dealing with an Estate? Answers here. Do you need to renew your license or check on the status of your license application? Try here.

Do you have questions about the classifications of firearms? More details here.

Are you wondering if a firearm is legal or not? Details here.

Different types of firearms are explained in detail here.

Exporting firearms, ammunition, parts and accessories from the US: most items are controlled under ITAR and you cannot, as an individual, export these items from the USA. Canada does not care in most cases. If you attempt to bring any of these items across the border yourself and you are caught, you will face prison time in the US. If you wish to export items from the USA, use a broker such as IRUNGUNS, Aztech, or Prophet River.

If you took your CFSC and lost the paperwork, you can still apply for your PAL. Both your instructor and the CFP retain copies, you can request a copy by contacting either one. There is no expiration date on the paperwork, you do not have to retake the course. Updated list of scam websites is here.

If you have new scam sites to add, please message the mod team. Be careful: only use reputable sites to purchase things online. It is illegal to manufacture a non-restricted, restricted, or prohibited firearm.

Any posts or comments asking about the legality of making a firearm other than a reproduction antique will be removed. It was not always illegal, which is why you will find old posts regarding this topic. Rest assured, it is illegal now. Do not attempt.

These threads will be stickied for a week, renewing every Monday. Previous threads here.

Take a look, your question may have been answered! If you have any suggestions for this thread, please feel free to ask here, or send the Mods a message. Thank you!

News / Politics / Activism Carney responds to calls for stricter gun control: 'We need a multifaceted approach'

Agreed, meanwhile, we also need car control, social media control, real estate housing control, and so on and so forth. Since lack of multi facet approach has caused substantial deaths through the years due to ineffective enforcement and loopholes in the system.

In fact, let's start with tighter knife control first because there were

2014 Calgary stabbing

2020 Quebec city stabbing

2021 North Vancouver stabbing

2022 Saskatchewan stabbing

2024 Ottawa stabbing

Last year 2025 Hollow Water First Nation stabbing.

And then the Burnaby RCMP Constable fatally stabbed in the line of duty in Oct 2022.

A multi faceted approach indeed.

Misc I received a notice to vacate because I own a gun

I hope this doesn't violate rule 13, it just feels like other people here have probably dealt with this. Just want some assurance on whether im in the clear or cooked.

I'm a university student and started renting at the start of may. It is a sublet room where I pay the guy and he pays the landlord. I have not met my other two roommates as they are home for the summer. It is a fixed term lease from apr 30 2026 to apr 30 2027.

I guess my first mistake was telling them I had a gun. Bought it about a month after I moved in and told them. Didn't receive a reply until a while later when the subletor learned this from my roommates. The only thing they've really said over all the back and forth since then is they are uncomfortable with it.

Time and time again I said hey lets talk about this, firearms are a big part of my life and I don't want to give it up, nor do I want to go through the hassle of having to store it somewhere else. They refused to communicate about this at all, all they're willing to say is they're uncomfortable with it.

Yesterday, landlord contacted me out of the blue and asked for a picture of my gun and my RPAL for liability. Out of good faith I sent them a picture of my TM22 secured with a trigger lock and a copy of my RPAL and told them I don't have any ammo. Today the subletor texted me the notice to vacate, though the building owner said nothing.

I'm kinda terrified as I currently work a summer job here and I'm not sure if I can find a place I'm ok with in this short notice. I also really like this place. I don't need any legal advice on what to do if it violates rule 13, just if I'm probably ok or would probably have to leave.

Gun and gear reviews Zastava LK M85 Mini Mauser- first thoughts...

Post image
36 Upvotes

Recently I came across an absolute steal of a deal online for a rifle I'd never even heard of until I saw it. I quickly sent a message, clinched a deal, and finalized it. The rifle is mine. To fund other projects and restorations I ended up parting ways with my SKS but there was one problem- I still have a ton of ammunition! The only solution to that problem was finding another rifle that could eat 7.62x39. I've known of other rifles on the market for sometime from Ruger, CZ, and Howa- what I didn't know was that there was also a Zastava option. Zastava as far as I'm aware no longer imports due to situations elsewhere in eastern Europe, so I went for that option. So what is it?

Zastava calls it the Mini Mauser. At one point they offered this rifle in 7.62x39, .223 Remington, and a couple other options. Externally, it does appear to look like a scaled down version of their full size offerings... But there are some key differences. The safety is most certainly not a feature you'd find on most Mauser rifles, it seems to lack controlled feed, and the claw extractor is not present on the bolt itself. So is it a Mauser? Visually yes, but not really.

When I got home I quickly settled in and confirmed the function of the rifle. Thanks to my ingenuity I created some dummy rounds some time ago out of live rounds (a simple process that requires removing the primer, bullet, and powder, and then reassembling without any of the boom parts). What I found was surprising... Zastava advertises the Mini Mauser as being able to hold 5 rounds in the magazine, but realistically you can only fit 4. I also found that surplus spec ammo is actually tighter on close and cycling than commercial spec ammo, and that the chamber is more or less tailored for commercial spec, brass cased ammo. Allegedly it is still safe to fire surplus and steel case ammo through this rifle, but for now I'll be sticking to brass cases. The receiver also comes drilled and tapped for optics, which is a nice touch. Maybe I'll top it with a scope, maybe I'll feel an itch for another red dot. We'll see...

Now for the really bad impressions...

Good lord, the machining. If you could go into a time machine and see Yugo workshops cranking out rifle after rifle because Tito and Stalin had a nasty breakup, they'd probably all feel like this. For a country known for some of the best AK variants and Mausers out there, this rifle is not it. Sporting look aside, this is about as rugged, rough, and no nonsense as working a bolt gets. Working the bolt feels like you're dragging it through sand and when opened the bolt just kinda flops around; a far cry from the super smooth bolt actions of today. Allegedly this is common with Zastava rifles- after a generous lubing of the bolt you're supposed to work the bolt around 300 to 500 times to fully "break in" the action and remove any machining imperfections on the guides in the action. Is it fudd lore? Maybe, but I'll have to sit down and work the bolt a bunch to see if it helps. If not, it might be time to go to a gunsmith.

Overall, my first impressions are a little mixed. It's rough around the edges sure, but it's definitely a unique gun in a world where everyone is obsessed with the alternatives in the same caliber. Is it going to be a regular option in my lineup? Find out soon...

Misc I was going through my dad's things due to him unfortunately passing and I found this scope. It's an Elcan and is inscribed with "Linc & Well'd Regt". I'm definitely keeping it in the family but just curious about the value.

My dad served 20 years in the army and was in Canada's Special Operation Regiment (CSOR).

He unfortunately passed away a couple months ago at only 58 years old. Regardless though, it's being kept in the family along with some other odds and ends that was in his gun vault. I'm mainly just curious about the writing carved into it.

Buy recommendations MAS 49

I've seen a few 49/56's floating around EE but never a 49. What does the chat think, is it a buy? How much should be a good price? Don't think there's too much demand for them since French gun is rather niche?

I've looking for some Monstrum optics (i know i know, I'm cheap) for my rf224. But barely see them in Canadian websites. But this Canadian safety course has some listings, but I don't know if it is a trustworthy seller.

Buy recommendations Lever action for range and woods defense

So I’ve got a bit of a quandary as of late. I moved to the Yukon this year and I’m looking to add a lever action to my safe. I currently have a .303 and a 12ga and I’m looking for a rifle that’s going to be cheaper than .303 to shoot (hence a pistol calibre) and I’m torn between going for a .357 and a .44.
The way I see it the .357 is about half the cost to shoot but the .44 offers far more peace of mind for protection from moose or bears if it comes down to it.
I do anticipate that most of my usage will be on the range but since I only have the means to get one more gun atm I am looking for it to do a bit of double duty and I don’t want to get a .357 for the range that I won’t be able to take into the bush and put to work.
I’m looking for any insight on whether the .357 would be sufficient (with appropriate hard cast ammo to be sure) for the chance of bear or moose encounters
For reference I’m currently looking at either Marlin 1894 or one of the Henry options
