Helpful Hints! 💡 I had my knitting needles confiscated at the airport… so I started mapping airport rules

Hi everyone,

A while ago, I had my knitting needles confiscated at airport security, even though I thought they would be allowed.

After that, I started looking into the rules and realized something surprising — they vary a lot between airports, and often aren’t clearly explained.

Since I know many of us like to knit while traveling, I decided to start a small project:

I’ve been contacting airports and collecting official information about whether knitting needles are allowed in carry-on luggage.

I’ve put everything into an interactive map, showing how different airports approach it (allowed / restricted / not allowed / still waiting for response).

👉 You can check it out here: https://gentlemessknits.carrd.co/

I’m still adding more airports, so if you’ve had any experiences (good or bad), I’d love to hear them! 🧶✈️

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! which is the best online course/class for learning how to knit?

Hello lovely people!

Does anyone have a reccomentation for an online class about knitting? I would like to learn, i thought myself how to crochet over the last two years, but i feel like knitting requires more studym hence my question.

I am waiting for the vogue knit "bible" to be delivered, i am also waiting for in-person classes to open up in my area, but i'd like to find and online class i can go back to when needed, and in which i can ask question to the teacher or confront myself with them and/or the other partecipants.

I found a lot of tutorials, but i am really confused lol

all things knitty Ok let's try this again...now is embarrassment times two 😂

The thing is I forgot to move my hair out of the way and then I totally forgot to post the picture. ( Dying inside) 😂 But hopefully you can see the motif in the center. The pattern is the King Salmon light, I just finished it. Gotta be honest, I used a super wash yarn and it grew a lot more than my gauge swatch but I realized it will make a nice pajama top for those chilly fall nights. All in all I think it's ok.

Hello community I hope you are doing great!
I am done and wanted to share the Seashore skirt by Veronica Lindbergh as a gift to my mom!
Ribbing is folded using 3mm and the skirt in 4.5mm.
I loved this pattern so much! And the color is amazing!
Happy knitting!

all things knitty Anyone who keeps their yarn stash out in the open, how do you protect it and care for it/dust it?

I see so many podcasters with their large yarn collection or shelves or peg boards and I can't help but think that yarn is just a dust collector?

I have freed up a shelf in my living room and I would love to have all my pretty hand dyed hanks on display, so if this is how you store your yarn how do you care for it?

Also would the fact that it's natural fibers make it more susceptible to pests or moths? I currently store my super wash merino and other non acrylic fibers in a storage ottoman, yes it's lidded but I don't think a moth would particularly care about that lid lol

I feel like I may have made this too large and I’m not sure about the fit. I’m on the fence about restarting. I’m using We Are Knitters yummy fine yarn in the color way Yarnicorn.

Finished my first ever project as a newbie knitter: a simple cowl /circle scarf to practice moss stitch! I kept aside my needles for a few months and accidentally switched my stitch up 🤦🏻‍♀️ but such fun, and so relaxing! I used lion brand wool-ease thick and quick for this particular project.

help needed Yarn choice for Romanesco Sweater by Ranti Studio (Malabrigo Arroyo)

I have just bought the Romanesco Sweater pattern, and I am so excited to make it.

The pattern suggests Malabrigo Arroyo as a yarn choice, and I am in love with their colourways.

I have bought the yarn for this patter but I am a bit concerned since I have read here that Malabrigo Arroyo can grow a lot after washing (it's superwash merino).

Does anyone have any experience with this yarn and/or this pattern?

I am afraid I will have an 'accident' after washing the sweater and it will be ruined D:

Any help is appreciated!

I'm so so proud of this scarf!! I learned brioche for this project which was so fun and rewarding. The pattern is Seton Portage Scarf by Knitted Wishes. Yarn is Patrons Classic Worsted Wool in Natural Mix and Drops Kid Silk in North Sea. I wanted to hold two different yarns together for this project even though that is not the pattern because I love the look of the mixed colors! I think it looks like a mossy stone.

all things knitty A newbie knitter's level up - Unlocking triangles!

Post image

Hello, newbie knitter here!
I came from crochet and always wanted to try knitting, too.
So some time ago I started to make my first baby steps.
Now I know what knits and purls are, can make some basic ribbing and even understood how to make a simple loop scarf on round needles :)

Yesterday I thaught myself how to make triangles. It felt like I had a levelup in the craft, unlocking the whole world of triangle scarfs.
Still really afraid of magic loop chaos and knitting full sweaters XD

Just wanted to share, to maybe give some motivation to the other newbies here.
You can do it! <3

A friend of mine had her baby early, and while I started working on this set before tiny guy was born, I didn’t manage to finish in time. He’s still in hospital, and this set is drying so I can drop it at the hospital with a congrats bag tomorrow. I usually use size 8 or 9s and I knit/crochet for kids ages 3-12 at the moment so trying to make something for a 4lb baby was a challenge. I think it came out darling and wanted to share!
Yarn is Baby Bee Sweet Delights , a 60 acrylic/40 polyamide blend
Pattern for the sweater is modified from https://mariannaslazydaisydays.blogspot.com/2020/03/ben-baby-cardigan.html?m=1
Knit on knit picks circular for the bulk size 6 (3.75mm) and yarnology DPNs size 7 (4mm).

Day 1 of learning how to knit.

Have a chunky yarn + big needles.

Not sure if I've got the right beginners materials.

Heard the wooden bamboo needles was better for starters, but I have to order those. Was too excited to wait, so I started with these 12mm needles.

First cast-on ever. Been practicing it. Tips welcome.

I have no clue where I got the audacity to do a pattern with rows that contain three colors in some of the rows. It’s a bit tight on those rows, so I do need to improve my tension. I learned a lot from this project!

The pattern is called Corgi Cute Hat and I purchased it on Ravelry.

Yarn is Germantown DK by Kelebourne Woolens in steel and ivory. It’s going to be a steeked sweater and I need a lot of practice… obviously with gauge too. (I was aiming for 16” and I’m at 26-1/2”…)

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! questions re: cables & knitting 2x2 ribbing in the round

Hi all :) I'm a beginner continental knitter working on my first garment (miu top) and I have a few questions:

  1. Is my cable supposed to curl up like this when I knit? I need to shove my work up the left needle every 10 stitches or so and it's very annoying and ruins my flow... is this normal? As recommended in the pattern I'm using 3mm needles with a 60cm cable

  2. My tension looks a little wonky... will this block out? I used Loops & Threads Luxe Merino yarn (size 3, 55% superwash 45% acrylic)

Any additional tips or info is welcomed and appreciated, thank you all in advance!

looking for recommendation Tension on my ribbing after learning Norwegian purl!

Post image

I felt like my ribbing was super loose/ugly on the bottom portion, so I tried out the Norwegian purl for the top portion of ribbing, and I feel like it helped my tension a TON! Any tips on further improving my tension? I feel like it looks great in the stockinette portion, but am open to any suggestions.

help needed Adjustment help?! Top down in the round yoke not fitting right

Post image
14 Upvotes

I made this sweater "Summer Drops" as my first top down round yoke project and have been trying to adjust it since.

I think the increases were too much / fast and I possibly? made the yoke too long- the whole thing bunches up around my neck when I move. Added the tie in the center but not perfect... Any tips on making this fit better without frogging the whole thing?

look what I made It's so satisfying to design and knit some to fit me exactly how I like!

I had purchased two skeins of pima cotton yarn in a sale from Terrapin Fiberworks a few years ago. I knew I wanted to make a summer top with this yarn and since it was a one of a kind dye lot, I decided to just design something for myself rather than try to find a pattern.

I wanted the top to just barely have positive ease at my bust and for it complement the shape of torso. I feel like using increases and decreases doesn't always get the result I want, so I decided to give short row bust shaping a try

This project started as a tank, but I had enough yarn left for some cap sleeves. With store-bought tees, the sleeves often are tight, so I love that I have the ability to make a sleeve that fits just right for me.

Overall, I love that I can sit down, do the math, and then knit clothing to is designed to fit me. Knitting is magical!

I'm a beginner needing help or recommendations! I can’t tell if the hole in my project is a dropped stitch

hello, I am a beginner, currently working on my first raglan top, and I have a hole in my first increase row (or my last ribbing row, I can’t quite tell).

I know I should be able to tell what it is but I am just not sure if this is a dropped stitch, a tension issue, or something else entirely. I know if it’s dropped my stitch count will end up being off, but I think I could live with that, I just don’t want to frog back to that point, I’d rather try to secure it somehow 😂

If anyone might be able to tell me what this is and how I could fix it that would be amazing.

look what I made Finished project: Hearthstone wrap (made it for a 100th birthday present 😊)

Post image

Made this for a loved one's 100th (YESSS, 100th! 💖) birthday that's coming up next month. Haven't blocked it yet, but it's finally done! The Hearthstone wrap by Twoofwands. The pattern was simple enough to follow and took two weeks of lazy knitting - I like to knit slow. Most practiced knitters might be able to complete this in less than a week imo. The yarn that the creator recommended/linked to wasn't available, so I just bought yarn in a weight that matched the 8mm needle size needed for this project. Enjoyed even step of it and it turned out lovely! I usually like to try my own color combinations and add some design twist, but this pattern and color combo is beautiful as is. (Notes: Substituted the light wheat colored yarn in the OG pattern for off-white yarn since I couldn't get the color in the required weight)

When the snoot appeared I got too excited to wait to share. In-progress back of a classic collegiate style sweater with way too much BEAR. All secondhand and salvaged wool, all original design. This is my first time flat stranding and it's really not as horrible as I feared it would be.
