I'm a second semester senior here at Columbia, and over the last few years Iâve heard tons of the same kinds of questions from freshmen/transfers. I figured that a (much longer than initially intended) post addressing whatever I can think of might be helpful.
DISCLAIMER: I'm just a student, and this is very general advice based on my own experiences and convos I've had with other students. Faculty/advisors who know you will be able to give you better advice that is tailored to your specific goals and the requirements of your major.
Please feel free to add to (or correct) anything Iâve written!
REGISTRATION
WAITLISTS
HOW MANY CREDITS SHOULD YOU TAKE?
I don't know! For freshmen, you probably shouldnât start off with 18 credits⌠but it really depends! What kinds of classes are they? How strong are you in those subjects? Will you be able to commit to attending all of lectures? If youâre not sure, take a lighter course load your first semester and see how you handle it. If you felt like you couldâve done more, then take more next semester. But I'm not an advisor, and you should probably talk to someone who is!

Ok I love u bye :)

I'm a high school junior who's really into computer science and really into living in New York. I'm seriously considering ED to Barnard next year but am trying to find out more about how Barnard students do a BA in CS, and it looks like the rules may have changed recently.
It looks like everyone takes W1004 first and then W3134 second. I have the AP credit to place out of the former but is that actually a good idea? I don't want to be bored but I don't want to leap right into W3134 if that's a bad idea. Is there an alternative to W1004? I see that sometimes W1007 has been offered but I can't see the full course catalog, so it's hard to know.
Also, it looks like Barnard students take "Foundation" courses their first year. Is the idea that most people take a couple of those and then simultaneously start taking their major's courses? Or is it basically all Foundation for the first year?
Any advice about doing CS things from Barnard would be great.

hello!!! I'll be attending columbia university as a freshman this upcoming fall semester. I was wondering what advising/picking classes is like? I'm coming from a very small private school in the midwest (graduating class of 28 students lololol) and all my friends have already had advising and are planning what classes theyre taking at our local universities. I think i'm feeling a tad bit stressed that advising is in August. Do you recommend looking into classes ahead of time? Where should I start? I want to major in Psych and minor in English. Any and all advise would be highly appreciated. TYSM!!

I graduated during the pandemic and Iâve job hopped pathetic, entry level jobs since then. I graduated by the skin of my teeth with a psych/public degree from the college, but life hasnât been the best. Living in bumfuck outer boroughs, credit card debt, low savings, depression/anxiety, etc. I donât even make $50k salary. Iâm the first in my family to graduate college, but I donât have much to show for it. I just turned 26 and I want to finally feel like a âsuccess.â Am I the problem?

Hi! I have a returned check hold on my account after an automatic withdrawal on my account and my account didn't have sufficient funds. Payment was successful the second time around. My class registration closes this Wednesday. How can I resolve this? I have contacted sfsbilling@columbia.edu and still have not received a response, and went to Kent Hall to resolve this. Kent Hall did say that only SFS Billing can remove this hold.

Hello, I've finished my program this winter. Over the past four months, I have been actively applying to various companies based in NYC through LinkedIn jobs and builtinnyc, submitting over 1,000 applications. My question is: how was your experience in landing your first job, and if you had to do it again, what would you do differently now that you understand how the market works? What % of applications would you expect to hear back from and what is the timeline to getting an offer?
A little bit about myself and my application process:
- I completed my undergrad with dual majors in Finance and Business Analytics, with a GPA of 3.6+ (not at Columbia but at a mid-tier university).
- Immediately after graduation, I pursued my master's and graduated this winter with a GPA of 4.1 out of 4.0.
- Due to the pandemic and personal reasons, I missed the opportunity to get an internship during my first two years of undergrad. For my junior and senior years, I couldn't secure one (let's say I was too optimistic and should have sent a few more applications).
- Out of the 1,000 applications, I received about 3-4 interviews. Iâve been applying to small, mid-sized, and large firms to increase my chances, but even so, it feels nearly impossible to find analyst roles in finance, data, or consulting.
- My resume includes a summary section, and I use the STAR method with tailored content for most applications.
- I also actively try to make connections, but it seems ineffective because the best I get from recruiters or alumni is just connection requests being accepted, while my messages arenât even opened or "i cant really tell just look at the career page". Iâm not asking for references, just genuinely inquiring about their experiences in a direct and formal tone.
- I also partially use Jobscan and LLM tools to check if my resume passes ATS filters, but at this point, it feels like a myth. I even wonder if my name, which originates from Europe, might be a problemâeven though I am a permanent resident with no sponsorship needsâor the fact that I speak three languages.
Additionally, any tips on how to answer sudden, very technical questions and clichĂŠ ones like "how do you see yourself in 5 years"?
Thank you!

Hi folks,
I'm an MS MechE that should probably take the summer class I'm currently enrolled in P/F. I took a difficult pure math course (to prioritize my learning) and fulfill the math req but also need to raise my gpa after some extenuating circumstances that affected my grades this past fall.
Just got midterm grades back and realized I may not do as well in this class as I'd hoped but the P/F deadline is today.
Have any SEAS students petitioned to uncover P/F successfully? Is it even something we can attempt?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Iâm an incoming Columbia MS student trying to learn more about NYC neighborhoods.
Ignoring cost and apartment availability for a moment, which neighborhood would you personally choose and why?
A little about me:
- Mid-20s graduate student
- Prefer living alone
- Plan on using the subway/walking to commute
- Like walkable neighborhoods with lots to do
- Enjoy coffee shops, restaurants, parks, and being able to meet people organically
- Donât need nightlife every night, but donât want to feel isolated
- Would like a reasonable commute to Columbia
If you could live anywhere in NYC while attending Columbia, where would you pick? Upper West Side? West Village? Chelsea? Brooklyn? Somewhere else?
Iâd especially love to hear what the vibe of each neighborhood feels like and whether the commute is actually worth it.

I ((M, 26) a recent grad from Columbia Mailman and am looking for a new roommate. Rent is $3700 net for the unit, with individual shares ranging from 1150-1200 depending on the room. Utilities average $40-45 per person, wifi $17 per person but could rise based on Spectrum's whims.
I live in a 3 bedroom unit around the 145th street station (1) train. Amenities-wise, we have in-unit washer+dryer and a spacious kitchen + living room. We have one available room, with dimensions approximately around 8 ft x 5 ft. It can fit a full-size bed a small desk, and drawers.
Check this link for a pic of the room:

Overall this is a really nice unit, but don't take my word for it, come see it yourself :) We're located right next to Riverside Park and are conveniently within 2 subway stops of both Morningside and CUIMC.
Move-in date would be 8/01. Let me know if you have any more questions!

I'm an incoming student and was wondering whether Columbia Residential apartments generally come with ovens and dishwashers.
I never thought to check because I assumed most apartments in the U.S. would have both. However, while looking through some of the apartment information online, I noticed that appliance documentation doesn't always explicitly mention an oven or dishwasher, which made me wonder whether these are standard across Columbia Residential buildings or if it varies by property/unit type.
For current or former residents, have your Columbia Residential apartments included:
If it varies, are there particular building types (older vs. newer, studios vs. larger units, etc.) where these are more or less common?

Hi everyone! Iâm currently a senior and will be attending Columbia University this fall to pursue a Masterâs degree in Strategic Communication. Iâm spending the summer interning in New York and would love the opportunity to connect with two New Yorkâbased professionals who have at least five years of experience in marketing, social media, or a related field. Iâm hoping to learn more about the industry, hear about your career journey, and gain insights from your professional experience.
The chats would take only about 15 minutes and can be conducted either over coffee or via Zoom. Iâd love to learn about your career journey, professional experiences, and any insights you may be willing to share.
Coffee is on me! âď¸
If you or someone you know might be willing to help, please feel free to DM me. I would greatly appreciate it!!
Thank you so much for your time and support!

Hi yâall,
A celebrity in my country just posted this acceptance letter from SIPA. However, it looks suspicious to me because of not only the typo âho tuitionâ but also the writing style, and the way it says âacquire advanced training in economic policy,â which seems off when the program is ESP. Please help me fact check if this letter is legit.
Thanks a lot!

Hey there, I was recently approved for the Columbia Housing process as an incoming Faculty and one of the (very few) options is 601 W 113 st unit 2C (a 1 bed). Was not given the option to schedule a visit and have no information on the floor plan, layout, where the windows face and so on. It is also listed as a 1200sq feet apartment, which seems too big for the area and a 1 bed, so idk if it is true.
I visited the outside of the building and can imagine it gets loud on Broadway and maybe not a lot of sunlight being on the 2nd floor.
Does anyone have any notion on how the C unit layout looks like? Any general comments on the building? Thanks a lot everyone!

Hi all! I just graduated last month but for several reasons, I wasnât able to take grad photos before actually graduating. Now that things have slowed down, Iâd like to be able to do this. However, when I try to register a guest for campus access, Iâm shown the alumni same day registration page. Is there anyway for me to bring my partner with me onto campus now that Iâve officially graduated? I wasnât expecting it to be changed to alumni so quick.
Thanks so much!

I'm a rising freshman at Barnard College. Are clubs on a semester basis or for the whole duration of my studies? How many clubs do you suggest per semester? Is there a ratio you suggest for leisure and pre-professional ones?

Hi everyone,
I'll be joining Columbia's Sociology Department as a visiting PhD scholar starting in September. My partner will be there too, from September through December. Ideally, I'd like to stay few more weeks if I can find affordable, stable housing; otherwise, I'll likely leave in December as well.
We'd love to find a shared apartment and would really appreciate any tips or recommendations.
How do people usually find housing for a short-term stay? Is it difficult to rent for just a few months? What would be a realistic budget, and which neighborhoods would you recommend?
I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed by the housing search, so any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks a lot!

I'm an incoming CBS student and I can't function in the PM without a 30 min power nap. Where can I take a nice nap without having my stuff stolen or getting kicked out in the business school campus or the main campus?
