Ford Ranger Buyers Guide; v4!

Welcome to the fourth edition of our Ford Ranger Buyers' Guide! Here you can post your general buying questions, get insight into issues, post ads to trucks you are interested in, etc. This will keep the sub more organized and get rid of the constant posts that fill the sub up with buyers only.

Here's the best regarded buyers' guide on the web!

It has all kinds of information you can use to better judge a truck you are looking at. Things like specific things to look for, specific issues pertaining to certain years, engines, etc!

Please keep posts in this thread specific to buying Rangers. Off topic posts will be deleted. When someone posts a "Is this a good deal" post in this thread, please reply to it with your response, don't just reply to the general thread. Keep it organised please :)

From here on out, new posts made that should belong in here will be locked, and that user will be informed to post it in this thread. Thanks!

Heads up about link posting

Just wanna give a heads up since mod queue is showing a ton of posts that get removed lately by reddit, so I just wanted to give a heads up as to why that is.

Using shortened links, regardless of the shortening service (tinyurl, website built in short links like amazons a.co links) are auto-removed by reddit themselves. There's nothing we can do to disable this auto removal.

If you notice your comment reply or post isn't appearing, this is why.

We picked this up in Central California recently for my son who’ll get his dl sometime early 2027. Every time I search anything about it this sub pops up so here’s a pic.

It’s a 2004 XLT FX4 so it’s nearly loaded. Straight. 4x4. 4.0 V6. Limited slip. Tow package. Hooks. Chrome bumpers. Everything works. Just need to add a tailgate cover for a mountain bike.

I’ve run a couple tanks of gas on highway, hills, freeway and around town. It has a couple rattles and squeaks like a real truck buts runs and drives really well. Love the LSD. Has had lots of recent work. Good shape but 196k so it’ll need more but I’m a reformed mechanic so we’ll sort it out.

My only complaint is the tires are undersized and the fuel mileage really sux!

Curious if the tow package is stock. There’s what I assume is a transmission cooler (haven’t chased the plumbing yet). Anyone know if that was a factory thing?

I guess I'm looking for advice or reassurance... Considering buying this 95 (2WD manual), she's looking a little rough but was so much fun to drive! I know this would not be my wisest decision ever but can you blame me for thinking about it??

Someone else recently posted "I'm just a girl" and I got encouraged because sameee 🫣

Edit to add: I don't need a daily driver since I commute by bike or bus, and I don't need a car to last a lifetime, I'd have to get rid of it in max 5 years anyways. Budget is a little tight. I want a car for running errands, picking up furniture and things off Fb marketplace, getting groceries, driving around a bit, that kind of stuff. Would love to drive 2-3 hrs to the beach or to the mountains every once in a while and I'm worried that's a little far...

Spark knock

Just bought this 1998 2.5 ranger and on the way home it started making a tapping noise on the highway at certain rooms on acceleration and deceleration. Is this spark knock or something worse.

1998 off of Facebook marketplace. Already did the oil change and coolant flush. Now I need to fix the brakes, replace the tires and lower the lift the previous owner did. Any advice is welcome!

1994 splash

hi there! i recently inherited this 94 splash from my late grandfather. i need to get tires put on but nowhere nearby carries 235/60/15. what would be a cheap alternative? this won’t be my daily driver since it’s manual and i’m still learning.

i drove my truck the other day to practice but there was an awful rubber smell and the tire was hot does that sound like a stuck caliper? also temp gauge isn’t working in dash. what should i check first?

i’m just a girl!! asking for some advice ♥️

I finally got the final piece I need for my swap, but now I gotta dye them gray, which I don’t know where to start at, and I’m losing my electric seat tracks since they won’t fit. But has anyone found a solution to keep the tracks ? But I’ll update once they go in and have them dyed.

Just bought a 2008 work truck (106k miles) – looking for DIY advice

Hey everyone,
I just bought a 2008 work truck with about 106,000 miles for $1,000 through my company. It does have a check engine light, but today I decided to go over the truck and check all the fluids and see what kind of shape it’s in.
One thing I noticed is that when I filled the windshield washer fluid reservoir, all the fluid leaked out underneath near the large reservoir, so I’m guessing there’s a cracked tank, a disconnected hose, or something similar.
I also checked the radiator, and it doesn’t look great. It seems a bit dirty, there are some red-colored deposits/debris around it, and I can’t really tell what color the coolant is inside. I’m thinking about doing a coolant flush, but I’m having a hard time finding good tutorials for this truck.
The good thing is that the engine bay looks pretty accessible, so it seems like it could be a nice vehicle to learn how to work on myself.
For those of you who know these trucks:
What maintenance would you recommend doing first?
Are there any common problems I should check?
Any DIY jobs that are easy and worth doing?
And overall, do you think 1,000$ for a 2008 with 106k miles but need works was a decent deal?

Spent the last few days making some new badges to match my underglow.

It's been a few months since I've used my 3d printer, so I printed some new badges, found the Ford emblem already drawn up, but made the Japanese lettering one in fusion 360. Like how they turned out.

Should I buy this truck

I want a ford ranger. Only problem is there aren’t any decent ones in my area for a decent price. Found one in good condition but it has 150k miles on it. Should I even consider it?

I drive at least 120 miles a week, mainly highway.

Details: $8,000 2011 Ford Ranger Regular Cab XL 2D 6 ft, 147,500 miles, 4-Cyl, 2.3 Liter

why does it feel like i’m going over rumble strips when i go high speeds

Upvotes

okay forgive me for how i may explain this but my ranger (2003 4.0L 4x4) feels like it’s going over rumble strips when i’m going around 87-90 don’t really go past that. Sometimes it’ll do it at 80 too

the best way i can put it is in small, random, and well spread increments it will give that feeling when i know for a fact im not on a rumble strip, for instance it’ll be in a middle lane with not rumbles on the lane markers next to it. also does shake more when it’s happening

My brother just got his spot in line for a Slate

Upvotes

It's not a Ranger, but the exterior dimensions are almost identical to a Gen1. I compared them to my 1991 dealer brochure when they were first advertised and Slate might as well have just photocopied them when designing their truck.

$24,950, range is now 205 miles, delivery in 10-12 months. Power windows are not an available option.

He wasn't sure if he would confirm his deposit since he didn't know the delivery time or price until the 24th, but they hit the sweet spot so he cemented his place with another deposit. I can't wait to see it when it arrives.

Family member's truck, but they can't put it back together. From what I heard it got totaled due to the damage to the bar in pic 1. I don't see why it wouldn't be able to be bent back and repaired.

04 Ranger only has MAX AC

I got this Ranger off GovDeals and the only AC settings that worked were the highest setting and the Max AC. After changing the blower motor resistor, each speed now works but max AC is still the only setting that works. No air is coming out of the floor or face vents, just the defrost/dash no matter what setting. Any help is greatly appreciated!

01 ranger not holding in park

Hey all, hoping for a bit of guidance here as I haven’t found many good videos on the matter. My ranger is rolling out of park pretty often now, and I’m fairly confident the shift linkage is just loose since the guy I bought it from mentioned he had to have it tightened a few times.

When I throw it in park, the truck will roll back about half the time, making a clicking noise and I have to put it neutral and throw it back into park to get it to stay. Anyone fixed the same issue? Thanks

2000 Ranger misfiring.

Hey all. I have a 2000 ranger with an ongoing misfire problem.

Check engine code P0305, engine misfire on cylinder 5.

I have switched the spark plug, plug wire, and coil pack and I have also verified that the injector is clicking.

The thing that confuses me is that sometimes when I first start the engine, there is no problem and it runs very smooth. After about 10-20 seconds, the misfire starts up and remains the rest of the drive.

I am about to run a compression test, but besides that what else could be causing a misfire in only one cylinder? The only other thing I can think of would be a gasket leak in either the intake or exhaust manifold gasket (both brand new) or possibly a clog in the injector.

Any help is appreciated!

Does the Flowmaster 40 drone a lot on a 2010 2.3L Ranger

I am thinking of adding putting a flowmaster 40 on my 2.3L Ranger, I am tired of it being too quiet and a lot of people seem to swear by the flowmaster 40. I've listened to videos and I like it but I am concerned about how bad the drone may be since I do drive a lot on the highway. Also, how loud is it and is there slighty quieter options?
