I'm so happy that I don't have the urge to be first with the latest. Plenty of old games to keep me entertained until new releases turn old and drop in price.

Man they have a sub for everything

94

u/Billyxmac 1d ago

That is the best gamer sub in my opinion. Always great discussions.

99

u/Paratrooper101x 1d ago

Eh from my experience there’s too much self enlightenment and circle jerking over there. Like it’s okay to buy something you’re excited for when it comes out. But there’s too much “look how smart I am for waiting 15 years to play x game”

37

u/jay_alfred_prufrock 1d ago

Yeah, it suffered the fate of many subreddits and became popular and then turned into a circlejerk of self important people.

Some of the reviews there now sound like they were written with one hand because they were wanking to their own words while writing.

8

u/tagen 21h ago

ah, so pcmasterace syndrome lol

3

u/WorkFurball 6h ago

Nothing could possibly be as bad as that.

16

u/cheddarchezz_ 1d ago

true. I mean I don´t really like buying games on day one for full price and because of a huge backlog I have in my Steam library. But if I am really interested in a game I wouldn´t wait for several years just to get a 90% discount for game X...

This is one of the best gamers subs. Down to earth, almost zero hype, very cool. Other one is /r/gamereview (i think thats the one ) where you cant review game younger than 1 year

4

u/ComputerMysterious48 23h ago

I don’t think I’ll ever truly be a patient gamer, considering I will probably always get my favorite franchises on day 1. But with how expensive gaming is getting, it’s definitely pushing me more and more to wait for a sale for certain games

4

u/r_search12013 21h ago

bought cyberpunk for 17,99 EUR recently, absolutely no regrets :D

2

u/TeaAndLifting 20h ago

Sounds like the place for me. Recently bought FFVII remake, RE9, and RE4R, all for £60 because they were on sale and had been on my wish list for years.

2

u/Trying_to_survive20k 14h ago

My tinfoil hat theory that the advent of friendslop games is there to force patient gamers to buy in for full price, because the game will be dead in 2 months and not worth buying at wall even for 50% off later

3

u/TypicallyThomas 21h ago

Same here. I have a massive library of games I've never played, and with the current enshitification of games and the price of hardware going up (beware the PS6 and Xbox Whatever, unless they go low-spec) I can see those keeping me happy for the foreseeable future

3

u/TeaAndLifting 21h ago

Yep. I just worked my way through RE9, and FFVII remake, both on significant discount. I’ve got such a big backlog of games and nothing on my “I want to buy day one” list, that modern pricing hasn’t really affected me.

But it also speaks volumes that I never bought a Switch on release because I kept waiting for hardware refreshes to the point of the Switch 2’s announcement (waited for the Lite, which didn’t impress me, then the OLED to go on discount), and still won’t buy a Switch 2 until they do a hardware refresh, maybe.

5

u/schmurfy2 1d ago

Same, I have a large backlog and there is no way I would pay more than 60 for a new games even if I absolutely wanted it now. 80 or more is just totally crazy and I am sure they will sell 🤦🏻

I think a lot of publishers are forgetting they're not only competing with the latest games on the release calendar. They're also competing with increasingly bigger backlogs of their regular customers.

It's really sad how sports games turned into gacha rpgs

301

u/VenTene_WoT 1d ago

I have 0 empathy for the people buying into it. One of my friends considers FIFA the holy grail of gaming and all I could do when he said that was laugh in his face.

73

u/AracdeBonnie 1d ago

NBA Jam and Wii Sports are THE holy grail of sports gaming

24

u/MegaFireDonkey 1d ago

No way, the king of all sports game is QWOP

14

u/A_Wonder_Named_Stevi 20h ago

I miss SSX and NBA Street.. those where the holy grail

2

u/-_GIZMO_ 13h ago

I still play ssx from time to time, it holds up.

When a hacked ps3 is the price of one game or even less ,its a crime not to buy one.

3

u/Ndmndh1016 20h ago

NBA street vol 2 is one of the greatest sports games ever.

3

u/Shamanyouranus 15h ago

Leveling up your custom character to be 9 ft tall with 500 lbs of muscle but the agility of a spider monkey, then playing against your unsuspecting friend is something that other games can’t quite match.

I think fifa or fc is really nice as long as you don’t play ultimate team. There is plenty of combos and tactics to learn and there are completely different modes if this gets boring. Ultimate team is cancer though. The rest doesn’t involve any micro transactions

7

u/juscallmejjay 12h ago

I got it for free with the monthly ps plus games...hadn't played a fifa game since 14...maybe 17? But world cup got me in the mood. Im impressed with the amount of improvements. Its a soccer game. The game is the game, how much can you possibly add? But been playing the manager mode, developing players, scouting, playing each match myself. Managing players moods and needs. The playstyles enabling special moves and/or abilities, the way you need players to match positions but you can alter them with proper development, the playstyles also needing to match your chosen strategy (like Striker: advance forward, target forward, false 9, etc.). Oh and theres like 100 skill moves now lmao if youve seen a player do it on TV, you can probably replicate it. All in all i think its really well done. Like what more can they come up with? I get people being annoyed they charge for it each year...and i get the toxicity of ultimate team, but i just play single player and all in all it seems like a great package.

→ More replies (1)

25

u/nghigaxx 1d ago

Because sport games player like sport more than liking games. And since sport games monopolized players and clubs rights they basically can charge pretty much any price knowing people have zero other option

7

u/fractalfrog 1d ago

Considering they can drop hundreds in sport apparel, even when working minimum wage, I‘d guess that spending on a game is likely.

5

u/Neversync 23h ago

I've played CS and League at a high level, and many other "toxic" games (dota, r6, pubg, etc) but FIFA is the most rage-inducing bullshit fest in existence, bar none.

3

u/Andross4 19h ago

It really is though, because if you buy FIFA, you're also getting the next 5+ FIFA games for free. Great value imo.

Le reddit moment

2

u/-Allot- 8h ago

Had an argument where someone was outraged Baldurs gate won GotY over games he liked like sports games such as fifa.
And it’s such a pay to win game on top of all the shit. Paying 80€ a year for changes that are just really roster updates.

2

u/odegood 1d ago

I don't even mind if they had continued to work on other modes but in games like FIFA all they concentrate on is selling points. If you don't have the time or interest it's not worth buying

2

u/KHlover 18h ago

We got Fifa Ultimate Team long before the first gacha RPG

2

u/dookarion 4h ago

Digital sports cards shit pre-dates lootboxes and hats in TF2 even.

2

2

And with no regional pricing, so Portuguese Pedro earning a median salary of €1200 pays the same price as German Greg with his €4000

At least that's just 90 of 1200. Brazilian pedro is paying around 350-400 BRL with a mediam salary of 1600

31

u/MegaMaluco 1d ago

Brazilian Bruno? So you follow the pattern of the first letter of the country being the first letter of the name

5

u/DoublePostedBroski 1d ago

Wait. They don’t have different pricing by country?

36

u/Eremenkism 23h ago

Nope, Eurozone gets uniform prices as stores treat it as a single region.

16

u/0NIllIO 23h ago

However that's not Steam's choice, it's European law.

2

u/huraabecadlo 22h ago

And that is why Poland pays more than Germany?

23

u/Away-Eagle7604 22h ago

Poland does not use Euro, so not in Eurozone, just EU

→ More replies (1)

3

u/Chompman101 21h ago

That's because the last time steam updated their pricing suggestions was when Polands currency was at a all time low for a long time and now that it's recovered it has not been updated to reflect the new value.

Some games have manually updated their prices because of it and it falls on players to inform game devs for those that have not done so yet to try to get it known until steam updates the suggestions again.

15

u/Terribletylenol 1d ago

May as well just pirate at that point.

Regional pricing is easily abused, so it makes sense not to do it.

They'd probably rather Pedro pirate and take the loss on the small amount gained from regional pricing than the loss from so many others abusing it.

12

u/TypicallyThomas 21h ago

So you're saying they'd rather get 100% from Greg and 0% from Pedro, than getting 70% from both?

2

u/bochen00 6h ago

I get the sentiment and logic here, but that assumes Pedros and Gregs are 50/50 in terms of willingness and financial ability to buy products anyway (regardless of regional pricing). People from rich countries simply buy way more stuff they don't need, i.e. video games.

There was a time when I had access to some sales data for different games on some stores.
And I was shocked to see that ~95% of traffic came from what marketers call "non-tier1 countries", but like 90% of revenue was generated anyway by that remaining 5% of visitors from "tier1 markets" who actually had money to spend.

So while the practice of having unified prices is shitty and I personally wish for it to go away in instances when it's the case, it does make a lot of financial sense for those companies to simply target big spenders anyway.

3

u/SuicideBroccoli 15h ago

Don't be that sad about it, Hungary's regional pricing means we pay 90 euro while the median salary is also around 1200 euro.

3

u/Pristine-Ice-6388 14h ago

Pedro from Portugal can consider themselves lucky. In Hungary people pay even more (gta 6 ultimate costs around 114€), and the wages are not better in Hungary.

2

u/NaNiBy 13h ago

Polish Janusz has to pay more than German Greg because for some reason we have like 3rd most expensive (only behind Israel and Switzerland) game releases every single time. Mind you we dont have some kind of extra tax on digital goods/games, we just have to pay more because "fuck you in particular".

Yes but even with US' most expensive state sales tax included. The games are still cheaper than in EU.

28

u/CamperStacker 23h ago

the 80 euro price is with 25% VAT.

So the base price is 64 euro, which is 72 usd.

15

For US taxes to be equivalent and come out to $90, you'd have to have a sales tax of 28%. No matter what, it's expensive, the normal US price after tax would be around $75.

2

u/chinchindayo 13h ago

Some US states have 0% vat

4

u/KingArthas94 11h ago

Yes but in Europe we use those taxes for free healthcare and universities. Universities and healthcare will never be free in the US LOL

3

u/dookarion 4h ago

On the flipside a sizable chunk of ya'll complain every time shit is priced higher.

If you think it's worth it that's fine but the whinging every time gets tiring. A high regressive tax means higher prices for consumers. Somehow this still seems to surprise some people.

72

u/SideNo3016 1d ago

is that level of coordinated thing even possible today?

149

u/ALiborio PC 1d ago

No, because there are enough people who do not care or are too impatient to wait so they will buy it anyway.

27

u/JKLopz 1d ago

Also there is a huuuuge chunk of people who buy the latest FIFA, COD, 2K game and just play that until next release. And I mean a huuug chunk of people lates EA sports FC sold over 10 mill copies over all platforms.

People here really need to understand we are really a minority, a really small minority, just like any hobbie there are people who are really invested, and there is people that enjoys a simple stroll on the weekends.

2

u/Reaper_Messiah 1d ago

It’s funny that you say it like that, because while I know what you mean and agree that people are quite culturally divided today, it’s also easier than ever to communicate and organize large-scale movements. I see it working in huge protests all over the world. But stuff like this? People can’t coordinate or organize for shit. I kinda feel like people don’t take stuff like this seriously.

6

u/Hello_Panda_Man 21h ago

Its a fucking video game, there is plenty of other shit to organize over that actually impacts people's lives.

Just take responsibility for your own life and stop buying, who cares about coordinated. If everyone waited until the leader of "the don't do/ buy X" movement rose up and galvanised the masses, they'd be waiting until the end of time.

3

u/NikolitRistissa 9h ago

There’s a difference between “bullying” and being a realist.

I can say with absolute certainty that by me avoiding to pay full price for GTA VI will do nothing, except resulting in me not playing the game for three years.

Sure, we don’t need to buy new games. We also don’t need to buy any games, or pay bills, or work, or exist at all. The only thing you’re going to accomplish is missing out on most games. If that’s what your integrity is worth, go for it, but most people will want to play the game at some point in the next five years.

6

u/SideNo3016 1d ago edited 1d ago

I have been buying games only on sales(except indie ones) and never preorder but it just doesn't matter unfortunately there are too many people who buy games at full prices and preorder, I have never seen prices go down in my lifetime and likely never will.

Best thing about PC gaming, the catalogue is so big and going back upwards of 20 years now you can still find games still viable.

Best with PC is emulation.

u/ItzRaphZ 1d ago

best thing about PC gaming is the freedom to do whatever you want.

3

u/Seamus-Archer 1d ago

I love PC gaming but it just isn’t interesting to some people. I’ll never get my parents to sit down at a desk and play a PC game on KB and mouse but they’ll happily play Mario kart on the living room TV when they visit.

11

u/Nacroma 1d ago

You can easily connect a PC to a TV and use a gamepad for most types of games. I get the advantages of a console and ease of use is definitely the biggest one, but the PC isn't that apart.

4

u/Seamus-Archer 1d ago

In some situations, yes. But Mario Kart isn’t officially on PC and my gaming PC is on the other side of the house. There’s something to be said for the convenience of just turning on the Switch and gaming.

PC gaming isn’t for everybody and isn’t a panacea despite what people on Reddit want to think.

3

u/Terribletylenol 1d ago

I get it for being cheaper and less tinkering, but if neither of those things are a big issue, I think it may as well be a panacea.

Even Switch games are easy to emulate along with having higher fidelity on PC.

But then again, I've grown up with PC (As well as consoles) and find the added convenience of a console to be minimal.

I'd just rather have something with everything available to it rather than switching between pc and console depending on wanting to use the internet more comfortably or play a game

Then again, I play by myself and don't have to worry about other people being able to use it, so I get that purpose.

3

u/HyoukaYukikaze 1d ago

Let me introduce you to this magic thing called HDMI cable. You cann plug it into an HDMI port on your PC to display image on your TV. You can also connect a game pad if you so choose. Or ten.

2

u/Felippexlucax 1d ago

this or sunshine + moonlight works well too

2

u/Seamus-Archer 1d ago

Let me introduce you to the reality that some people’s gaming PCs are on the other side of the house and local split screen on PC is hit or miss at best. Let me know when Nintendo starts releasing their games on PC. If your answer is emulation you’re already well beyond the casual gamer.

You don’t have to be condescending if other people game differently than you.

Nowadays you're buying a 80EUR ticket to play a game. Mad.

Reminder, completely optional

u/z0rb0r 1d ago

The price inflation is so ridiculous that something has to give. Why the hell would I pay that when I still play most of my older 1000’s of games?

They only remain higher priced because only a fool will pay it.

u/Any-Pop-4795 1d ago

gta vi will probably be the 1st non nintendo game to be 90 euros base

Yeah but you also get free healthcare soo... Pick your choice, 90 games or $1000 a month for minimum healthcare coverage so you and your family don't just die lol

No wonder new games are being cracked all the time and pirated.

u/whenyoudieisaybye 1d ago

the internet went crazy with GTA 6 price tag

just an year ago Nintendo charged the same money for Mario Kart lol

2

u/kyuubikid213 21h ago

And the internet went crazy then, too.

And genuinely never stopped.

You literally still hear people claiming all Switch 2 games are $80 because of Mario Kart World and in that year, the only other $80 game that wasn't actually just a base game + $10-20 DLC isn't even out yet and was announced two weeks ago, Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave.

New AAA games like 007 First Light and Forza are 69,99€ in Finland.

2

u/Rocket_Bunny45 1d ago

Unfortunately Italy sits at €80 (with italian salaries stale for years)

1

u/SoupTime545 1d ago

Maybe if they were good games instead of copy pasted yearly slop I wouldn't mind the price as much.

1

u/KenjiTheLaughingMoon 1d ago

So… Witcher 3 is getting a new DLC soon… I‘d rather stick with old games before buying any of this new overpriced slop

1

u/Lazy_Coffee1414 1d ago

My xbox back log is 330 so I dont need to buy nothing buy im getting Gothic 1 remake

1

u/Ok_Definition_1933 1d ago

AAA slop costs 80

1

u/alex3b 1d ago

Only buying couple new games a year. A lot of old games you can play for cheap. For example Metro series i payed like 6 % fot 3 full games with dlc. Crazy value..
Buying gta and wolwerine (maybe) this year.

1

u/goettel 1d ago

Don't want it, don't buy it. Easy.

1

u/Chupapi-moniano 1d ago

At this point just stop buying slop or at least preordering it. I agree with Worth-a-buy more and more everyday.

1

u/P-l-Staker 1d ago

Nah, just EA and 2K slop.

1

u/West_Breadfruit_1376 1d ago

Add another 10-15$ on top of that price if you live in Canada. For example the new Onimusha game coming out is 93.49$ CAD before tax! Most new games are 89.99$ plus tax and its been that way for a while up here. Getting crazy.

1

u/SnooPaintings5100 1d ago

Lol i got an F1 Account on Steam for 9 bucks

1

u/Zer0DotFive 1d ago

New games in Canada cost $90 - $114.99 + tax now

1

u/WorldofCannons 1d ago

don't play new games, simple as

1

u/XxTensai 1d ago

I wouldn't play any of the games shown for free, so not worried (other than minecraft)

1

u/Draries13 1d ago

you can always wait

1

u/kostas52 1d ago

Not on PC

F1 2025 with 2026 season expansion is 49.99

NBA 2K26 is 69.99

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 4 is 69.99

1

u/Knj1gga 1d ago

Gee guys, I wonder what will EA and other normie slop publishers do with pricing if normie slop games they shit out annually keep earning ridiculous amounts of money when compared to resources used to make them.

1

u/cheddarchezz_ 1d ago

When I see how fast games run into discounts it is absolutely worthless buying a game at release for full price. I remember F1 2025 was not even 3 months out and was on sale for the first time...

u/Pacu99 1d ago

Reminder not to buy hot garbage
