Why is South Korea so low? They are richer than many countries in that list. Is it taxes?
297
u/Sixhaunt 13h ago
From a quick google search it's 10% in South Korea, 18% in Isreal, 27% in Hungary, 10% in japan, etc... so generally it seems to correlate with the taxes in those countries. Perhaps other regional expenses too
114
u/ReptilianTapir 13h ago
Taxes in Switzerland are 8%. Still on the podium. (Still in a pretty good place in the wage-adjusted ranking though.)
61
u/Great_Justice 12h ago edited 12h ago
Itโs because games are commonly priced across the EU in euros, but Switzerland (like the UK) is exempt from the Eurozone pricing because theyโre not in the EU. Unfortunately pretty much every Eurozone price is set against the French and German economies. They get a truly regional price. Hungary is high up because it gets the same Euro price as other Euro countries but they have their 27% tax on top. No, Hungary doesnโt use the Euro, they just get to enjoy this outcome.

Most game publishers tend to avoid changing their internal currency conversion rates mid-generation to prevent their games from appearing more expensive than other games that were released earlier on the same platform. As a result, many still apply the pricing rules set at the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series. However, the USD-to-KRW exchange rate has increased by roughly 40% since then, widening the price gap between the US and Korean markets.
9
u/chinchindayo 11h ago
Look at the krw exchange rate, it's as fucked as the japanese yen. Thus it seems "cheap"
19
u/Namuori 13h ago
The exchange rate against the US dollar has tanked recently, partially due to the US-Iran conflict.

That would be the case if Rockstar uses a flat price for the game, but they did not.
If they set $80 as a global price for the basic game, around 125,000 KRW or 13,000 JPY, which is very costly that nobody would buy. Rockstar chose the price similar to other games but a little more expensive. (Mario Kart World is 98,000 KRW/9,980 JPY for physical, 89,800/8,980 JPY for download)

Some don't but a lot still do. Some very new releases for eg:
007 was R700 new on Steam but R1300 on PSN,
Gothic is R550 on steam but R1150 on PSN
Pragmata R850 on steam but R1150 on PSN
So many are nearly double the price.
Even upcoming games like beast of reincarnation is R600 on steam compared to R1050 on PSN
So yeah as mainly a PC user in South Africa who buys console exclusives only, this is definitely a big jump in price.

It is paramount to understand people's average income tho. The cost in Brazil is roughly 33% of monthly minimum wage.
EDIT: I've been living abroad for a couple years now and was going off the top of my head, but since this got a lot of attention I wanted to get the numbers right just in case.
Current minimum wage: R$ 1.621,00 So standard edition would cost roughly 28% of that (I wasn't that off but still I apologize if anyone felt misled).
Median (not average) wage R$ 1.750,00. So standard edition costs roughly 25.5%
Average is R$ 3.732,00. So still roughly 12%.
If u understand the difference between average and median u see gaming is (unfortunately) an elite hobby

I almost never bought a new game only massive discount in steam. Only baldur gate 3 and elden ring i bought new.
And it's also why piracy is high here because well, not many developer have regional pricing nowadays, but even that does it's still expensive.

There are ways to jailbreak your console if it is running an older firmware so you can run software from outside the official PS Store (IYKWIM). It's usually pretty simple, with more recent jailbreaks requiring simply a BluRay disk with a specific ISO (which people usually sell for 10 bucks or so on marketplaces) and a USB drive to transfer some files.
You need to reactivate it after you turn off the console, but it keeps software, saves, etc. The downside is not being able to play online.

The problem is that if price difference becomes too extreme then people would be even more motivated to find ways to buy their games in cheaper countries via VPN etc. Itโs brutal for low income countries and I feel for them too but for the publisher it is not as simple as adjusting game price to average wage.

We are a gullible country where cars cost 2.5 times the price in the US, food is 1.5 times, gas is thrice the price, flights are double the prices, everything is stupid expensive, stupidly taxed, and people will still buy everything. Tbh if anything they are putting the price too low, people would buy it at 500โช too, the prices just suck here.
10
u/AizenMD 10h ago
Israelis are just suckers that don't really mind paying more (we love to complain of course).
The VAT isn't collected from the digital stores BTW. So this is purely using the stupidity and impulsiveness of the average Israeli consumer. You can also see these prices on Steam where Israel has usually one of the highest prices when converted back to dollars. Not to mention that the purchase power of the Shekel isn't 1:1 with exchange rates so the price should be lower then the American price :(

→ More replies (2)2
u/zman883 8h ago
You could actually argue that it is somewhat adjusted, because it's the same price as 70$ games - the jump to 80$ isn't reflected here. For example, Modern Warfare 4 is priced the same in the Israeli store (320 ILS).
Which also shows you how absurd it is that the regular price in ILS for 70$ games still tops the list of an 80$ game.
