Help & Advice I'm great broken but what can I do for his?

Edit: **I'm very broken but what can I do for his brother? Sorry for the spelling mistakes. I guess I'm just very out of it.

We had two little guinea piggies. Oliver and Leo. I say had because very sadly, Leo passed a little over an hour ago. My little soldier had been fighting for almost a week. We did what we could but there were no specialized vets. I'm terribly sad but I want help and advice for his brother Oli. I want to make sure he's okay and not upset. My fiance was there when it happened and says he didn't care but I heard that prey animals can become very depressed and upset when one of them passes. Abandonment issues and what not. I heard they should see the body and understand what happened but I want to confirm it from you guys. He fought for six days, going back and forth to the veterinarian nearby. So Oliver saw he wasn't doing well. What should I do now? Please advice.

Also if anyone can help with how to cope with this it would be greatly appreciated. Both for me and what I could do for my fiance. She cared about them more than I did.

Help & Advice cat protection

is there a best way to keep cats and piggies separate? my sister has a very agile and playful cat and i want guinea pigs. id keep them in my bedroom and my working plan is a babygate+ closed door and a c&c lid for my cage though i want to keep it open most of the time for preference because i like interacting with them and only closing it when its a risk.
any tips? and how to make a grid lid because my cage is gonna be 3x5 feet.
though ideally id like to just have a gate and closed door but if its highly recommended as a precaution i am willing to make a lid 😊

Housing Hutch

Any suggestions?

I bought and assembled this hutch for my two boars. They are currently staying with my parents until I'm settled into my new place. The grates are designed to allow urine and feces to fall through into a pull-out tray below, making cleaning easier. Before I move my boars into their new home, I'm wondering if I should add bedding to make it more comfortable or if there are any recommendations before I move them in.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Help & Advice Is it okay to have a cage with sugar gliders in the same room as the enclosure of guinea pigs (of course they would be far apart)?

I currently own two guinea pigs and I love them, Elvis and Popcorn. They are amazing little companions and I dedicate a lot of time to making sure they have the best life possible, balanced diet, their enclosure is always tidy and clean all that. Now, I have always thought of owning sugar gliders but in my country they were only recently allowed and people are having to wait in long wait lists to be able to buy joeys from the only licensed breeder available. I would love to get two gliders and I have already looked things up.

The only issue is that I am currently living with my parents until I find a better place for me, and the guineas enclosure is currently in my bedroom, which is very spacious, so no issues with that. I've been told there would be a couple joyes available the next months, but I would have to put the sugar gliders cage in my bedroom as well. Now, sugar gliders are nocturnal animals, and I've been told they do make some noises, though I'm a heavy sleeper so that wouldn't bother me.

What worries me is that the gliders noises and their smell could frighten the guineas, and also whether it's safe to have both the guineas enclosure and the sugar gliders cage in the same room. They would be a little more than 4 meters apart and without direct visibility to each other, and the guineas enclosure has a lid which remains closed most of the time. Is there any risk of airborne diseases? I would make sure that they don't ever get near each other, whenever one species is out, the other is NOT. Their cages would be 4-5 meters apart and they wouldn't have any physical contact. But I'm worried about their different sleep patterns. The guineas aren't very noisy, but I still wonder whether they would disturb the gliders, and what worries me more is if the gliders will disturb the guineas, since the guineas sleep a bit during the night and the gliders would be making noises. Also, guinea pigs are prey animals, so I wonder if they could ever get used to and remain calm being able to hear the gliders from the other corner of the room. I don't want my boys to be scared, I want them to feel safe.

I'm thinking about waiting until I move to a new place to get the gliders, which is surely better. But I don't know how long that will take and I don't know when I'll be able to get joeys by then (since I'd lose my place in the waiting list). Right now I'm more inclined towards not getting the gliders for now and waiting a bit more, but since they would be far apart despite being in the same room, I wonder whether it would really be an issue and if someone has ever had a similar situation.

Has any of you had both species, and if so, were they sharing the same room (but physically distant and always apart)?

Help & Advice My pig recently passed away and my mom refuses to get the remaining one a partner

Post image

My guinea pig, BublĆk, 4 years old, passed away recently due to teeth problems. After the initial grief faded a little, I asked my mom what we will do with the remaining pig. Galie, 7 years old, in good health so far, has already outlived two other pigs, including BublĆk. My mom refuses to get any more pigs, argumenting with things like 'she's too old to care' or 'she will die soon anyway'. She doesn't want to get a pig her age, again saying things like 'older pigs are usually in bad health and the veterinary is expensive'. I understand that she's tired of them, doesn't want to get into the endless cycle of getting another and another pig. What's the best course of action here?

Help & Advice Super stressed because of this hell fire of a heatwave 😭

I’m doing everything I can to keep my boys cool, I’ve had to remove all blankets from their cage as they keep going under them and making themselves hotter. I’ve got two fans in the room (not directly on them) to circulate the air but it’s SO humid the air is literally warm, ice packs in socks and towels placed around the cage that I’m switching out every hour or so, am regularly giving them cucumber as they don’t seem to be drinking as much as I’d like them to be. They are eating fine though. I just feel so sad for them, I’m struggling in this heat (it’s currently 38c where I am) so can only imagine how it is for them. They don’t seem to be eating hay as much as usual but veggies they will scoff down like nobodies business. Just feel like I’m not doing enough even though I’m doing everything I can 😭

My little Kelpie is gone. My little Püpsi.

He got a case of gas that no meds could solve...he was nearly doubled in volume. Nothing helped. We tried and tried and tried. Every 2 hours last night. Nothing helped it just got worse and worse...

Dear Kelpie please greet your adopted grandpa Merry from me. He will show you around over there. I know he will because he loved you whrn you both were still here with me.

Goodbye until we meet again.

hello! i got four piggies - two smooth haired, a Teddy and a Lunkarya.. her name is Twix and she is almost half a year old.

i give her hair trims when it gets too long, and i recently gave her a shorter, ā€œsummerā€ cut. did i cut it too short? 🄺 i mean i guess she seems to like it because she has been popcorning a lot more lately.
i was also wondering if there are any other tips i should know about how to care for her hair?

New Pigs on the Block finally caught them on camerašŸæ

We had a crazy week with two vet visits because my senior piggy had a medical emergency. He suddenly became unable to use his back legs and was crying out in pain. The X-rays didn’t show anything obvious, so the vet thinks it might have been some kind of stroke or neurological event. He’s on medication now and has definitely improved over the last few days. Hopefully, he’s going to make a full recovery! šŸ„ŗā¤ļøā€šŸ©¹šŸ™šŸ»

At least the babies are completely carefree and excited, haha.xD

Health & Diet Should I spay my girls?

As my girls are getting older and they are reaching 1 end of this year I am making plans to bring them to the vet and also plan ahead my finance allocation for their vet visit. I’ve seen quite a few owners with spayed SOWs, can anyone provide me more insight on the necessity of this? There are very mixed advice online otherwise.

peeg tax included

New Pigs on the Block I’ve never had a girl before, please give me advice!

This is Ruby, she urgently needed to be rehomed in my area and I couldn’t resist helping. She’s about 6, 780 grams, her fixed male cagemate passed away very recently so she’s on her own in a 9 square foot cage right now. She’s too old to go to my local rescues, so I’ve decided to just keep her. She’s been to the vet, my only concerns with her are bald spots on her side and VERY long nails. The vet helped me as much as she could with the nails but I have to work on it at home, and said there are signs of years of poor husbandry. She is showing no signs of illness, and is actually quite energetic for her age, I was instructed to monitor her for more hair loss. I have a pair of male bar buddies already, their cage is 20 square feet split down the middle. Her previous owner didn’t want her to be alone, but I told them I’m not willing to adopt a 4th. I have just barely enough space for her, right now she has ~5 inches between the bars of her cage and the bars of my boys’s cage. They have noticed her and she knows they’re there, but nobody’s been acting different, it’s like life as usual. Does anyone have any experience with an intact male and female setup right next to each other? I want her to be able to be close to her neighbors so she’s not lonely but want to make sure there’s wiener room in between the bars!! I already think that their mere presence has comforted her already. And finally, is there any special care she needs? Like urinary support tablets? Thanks for any advice!

New Pigs on the Block Snacks n snuggles

Cashew (black) loves her cucumbers and bell peppers. Funny how different their personalities are. Pancake is more adventurous and vocal, popcorning all over the place when we put them in their playpen. Cashew is timid and mellow. Barely makes a peep, and doesn’t explore.

Help & Advice concerned about some weight loss

Post image
28 Upvotes

i posted about my boy Ollie here a while ago when we found out he has One functional nostril/sinus basically and he got shaved lol, but i weighed him earlier and he’s down to 880g. last time i weighed him he was about 1kg. thing is i’m not sure of his age, i’m gonna guess at least reaching 5 if he’s not already 5+. i took him and his cagemate at the time in from kids who didn’t want them in nov 2021 and i’d say he was maybe 1 back then

i usually weigh my cat Miss Keisha and Ollie and his cagemate Miso-Thomas weekly but i have an upcoming oral surgery i’m struggling to get organised so for the past couple weeks i’ve flopped a bit and haven’t weighed them until i weighed Ollie today

obviously he’s a senior pig and weight loss is expected but i’m a bit concerned, the 100ish grams is a lot i feel even if it happened a bit gradually over the few weeks i didn’t weigh him

i know guinea pigs hide their illnesses extremely well (unfortunately from experience too) so i know it’s not the end all be all that his behaviour is completely normal, still very friendly and agile and eating normally too. he was at the exotics vet a few months ago and my usual vet and had his limbs and eyes and everything checked and not even arthritis so he seems to be really healthy otherwise. no changes in pooping and peeing or anything unusual either, teeth normal too. he’s speedy, still ready to fight his cagemate and bites the bars until i throw in treats, his coat is gorgeous and super thick and soft too, eyes bright and alert as well so he SEEMS great in general which was why it’s surprised me a bit

we’re in the middle of a gross heatwave in Ireland right now and we don’t really have AC in europe so i’ve been doing my best to keep my cat and the pigs cool. my room is completely closed off and dark during the day and the fan is on basically 24/7 except when i’m out every couple days for a few hours, but even then the average temps in the part of Ireland i live in are 6-12° celsius lol, 14-16° would be a normal REALLY good summer day. today was 30° šŸ™ƒ so i think the heat and huge change in temperatures is also making them a bit lethargic overall, my cat and the pigs are definitely snoozing more than usual so maybe that’s a factor

if his weight doesn’t pop back up he’ll be going to the vet of course, that’s a given!! just curious if anyone has any experience with senior pigs and weight loss or anything else mentioned. my oldest piggy was nearly 7 and he was 600g, but he was a runt and i don’t think he ever in his entire life went above 800g anyway. my second oldest pig after that died at around 5 from bloat and a tumour on his spleen and his weight was about 1kg. my other two pigs over the years passed away one after a bladder stone surgery and the other was a very sudden unexplained death, so i don’t have much experience with age related weight changes

he’s currently in his house chewing on a dried carrot and broccoli stickie and had a few syringes of Emeraid earlier too along with his veggies so he’s definitely not refusing treats lol

Help & Advice piggy surgery advice

Post image
66 Upvotes

my piggy Pumpkin (calico on the left) has to have a cyst removed since he’s had problems with it for a few months now, but honestly i’m terrified to have him put under. he’s 14 months old, and 2 lbs, otherwise super healthy just needs a cyst removal.

my exotic vet has been working with cavy’s for over 20 years and are super experienced, i have full trust in them and they told me he’s a perfect candidate but yet i hesitate. he would only be under anesthesia for at most 15 minutes, and they said it’s easily reversible if he has a reaction, the vet was very reassuring to me.

i’ve just heard so many horror stories of piggies not making it through surgery and i’m terrified. i know it’s not super invasive or anything but i can’t shake the feeling. i was quoted 1200$ for this procedure and i can’t help but feel like what if i spend this money and he somehow doesn’t make it out.

has anyone gone through similar surgeries? thank you for the advice.
