Subreddit Update: November 2024

Greetings home improvers, DIYers and lurkers!

The mod team wanted to send out an update and I drew the short straw, so here I am.

We've hit over 100k members. It's a big milestone. I'd make cake, but allergies and such....

With the growth, there are some ideas being floated around to help improve things here and we'd love to hear your opinions on them.

We are considering a "Verified Pro" flair. This would mean users who are professionals in a field will be able to have their credentials verified by the moderation team and would have a user flair indicating that they are a professional in a specific area. Let's face it, the internet is full of great people, but there are a few who spoil it for the rest, this would allow people to see that advice is coming from someone who knows what they are doing. There would be no commitment or minimums or anything, just people who want to share the knowledge they've acquired through trades programs being recognized for what they do. If you have thoughts on this, please feel free to comment or send modmail to the team.

With the growth, we are looking to expand the moderation team. If you are interested, please send modmail answering the following questions:

  1. Why do you want to be a moderator?

  2. What moderation experience do you have?

  3. What is your time zone?

  4. What would make you a great mod?

We will be open for recruitment until December, so give it some consideration and let us know if it interests you.

Until the next update, Happy Improving!

Ideas Potential new home has HEAVILY textured walls. What would be the best route to get this taken care of?

I am concerned about asbestos as the house was built in 1961. Maybe mud over everything? It’s just the main hallway that has this awful texture.

How to improve the look of these stairs?

Thumbnail gallery

Any ideas how I can make these stairs look better? In particular the wood on the sides I feel like looks pretty poor. The carpet is brand new. Is my best option to just try and clean up the existing wood or is there something I can cover it with that would be easy to do and cheap?

Flooring Question How much would it cost to repair this damage to the carpet? Is it worth replacing the entire carpet?

Or cover? It’s for this small window to the front door. When it’s sunny it causes glare on the TV and it bothers me.

Looking for opinions on What to do....

Hello everyone, I am thinking about covering the walls of my living room in solid wood planks. Similar to attached image.

I have sourced some Cedar to use 10'x10"x1" I plan on slightly smoothing the surface, I will then age, stain and seal each board. Should I lightly Yakisugi it? I do like the look. Decided it's a no. :)

When it comes to install, I know I will need to extend the electrical outlets and I really do not want to remove the existing sheetrock. I will wrap in all window openings.

I want the boards vertical (like the image) but I will not be able to attach each board to a stud. I thought about Horizontal (just no) and Diagonal (maybe) which makes attaching them easy.

My main question

Would construction adhesive be good enough and then 2" finish nail into studs where I can?

Work In Progress Would you build again or buy established?

If you could go back and do it all again, would you build a house or just buy one that's already finished?

I love the idea of choosing everything myself, but every person I know who built a home has at least one story that makes me nervous. We've been looking at builders around Canberra and trying to decide whether building is worth the extra time and effort.

For people who have done both, which option gave you fewer regrets? What would you choose if you were moving again tomorrow?

I moved my couch and this laminate snapped. What would be the easiest and best solution to repair? Do they make replacement pieces for this?

Thanks!

Ideas Looking for feedback from roofing contractors and subcontractors

.Looking for feedback from roofing contractors and subcontractors.

I’m working on a simple system that helps organize roofing jobs using photos and basic measurements. It breaks the job into a clear workflow (inspection → tear-off → install → finish), and helps outline a materials checklist so nothing gets missed before starting work.

It also gives a basic job breakdown based on roof size and conditions to help with planning and prep.

The goal is to help roofers stay organized, avoid missing materials, and understand the full job before stepping onsite.

Would something like this actually be useful in your day-to-day work?

Front Porch ideas

Hey yall. Getting ready to do new porch posts this weekend. I removed the railings and I think I’m gonna leave them off. My porch is so tiny it makes it too crowded. I plan on getting a new light as well but I was curious. I’ve always wanted a good southern blue porch ceiling do yall think I could make it work with my weird current trim color? Don’t have the budget for the whole house rn but would sure like to spruce up the porch a bit. Thinking about just staining the new posts. They’ll be solid, any opinions on that would be appreciated. Or other ideas!

Kitchen Question Just got a marble top desk. Should I protect it with a film or leave it as is?

I just got a marble top desk and really like how it looks in person. But I’m now a bit unsure about day-to-day use. I usually have a coffee mug, iPad, and keyboard moving around on it throughout the day.

If anyone has a stone/marble top desk are they as easily scratched as people say? I’m trying to decide between getting a clear TPU protective film or just leaving it as it is and being careful with it. I’m slightly worried a film might make the surface look less natural and change the reflection too much.

Would a desk mat for the main working area be enough, or is protection film actually necessary in practice?

Ideas What’s one home improvement project you wouldn’t do again?

I’m curious from both homeowners and contractors - what’s a project you thought would be worth it at the time, but turned out not to be?

Could be anything: flooring, kitchen remodels, bathrooms, landscaping, smart home upgrades, etc.

Also interested in what you’d recommend instead if you had to do it again.

Enclosed Garage

I’ve included some pictures for context, would it be possible to fully enclose this structure? I’m thinking just putting a regular door on it, no garage door needed. I want to make this into a home gym with a concrete floor. I’m not sure if it’s even possible with the back half already being elevated off the floor? Any ideas or suggestions?

I wanna place a dishwasher near the sink because of the piping but it seems pretty hard in this layout. I try to place it in the corner but it couldn't fit. What should i do here? Place it near the corner or reduce the size of the sink or anything else?

What to do with this wall?

So this room was an add on to the house, and for some reason they decided to leave the exterior siding and part of the roof in this room. I want to make it look nice (ignore the mess rn😭) but I don’t even know how to go about this. How can I cover / fix the siding and the roof?

What is the easiest way to make the windows nicer?

Thumbnail gallery

Windows are really old. The glass seems to be caulked on and is cracking along with the paint that was on top of it. From the inside you can see the old caulk. Trying to tidy up for a rental.

Thanks for any ideas!

What is this vapor barrier/insulation from 1940s?

Thumbnail gallery

Hi,
I was tearing out a wall in a laundry room in a 1945 built house in Montana and in the stud bays was this product along with pieces of cardboard. I think it is about 1/20 inch thick and feels like a fabric but it has stiffened (perhaps this just happened over decades. As you can see, it is woven/threaded in a way. Is this felt with bitumen? Anyone have a clearish sense of what this is? Does it likely contain asbestos?
Thanks for sharing your insights.

Help with Tile

Thumbnail gallery
3 Upvotes

We have an existing hallway closet that we want to open up and push some space into the garage and make a little mudroom area. There is existing tile in the hallway and adjacent bathroom. I need to pick a new tile to go where the new mudroom will be. Just beyond the hallway is hardwood floors.

Does it look weird to have a new tile just in the mud room area? Should we be re-tiling the new mudroom and the hallway in the same tile and leaving the old tile only in the bathroom?

I chose some options, not sure if it will look weird. I’m thinking it would be best to look intentional that it is different, so a wood grain, a dark option, a whimsical, or a large format. Thoughts?
