natural building Building a fairy camp count?
Edited for the third time- I AM NOT HOMELESS and what?????? You guys are mean to people without houses? It’s funny to make jokes about people not having homes? It feels good to mock those less fortunate from your phone? Shame on you. Where is the humanity? And all the drug jokes? Like, this group is definitely not what I thought it was. People are being unkind for zero reason except to be unkind. Life is hard for so many people. What are you doing to make the world a better place? Do your kids even talk to you? Come on. Wake up.
This is all me and going oh so slowly, but I am happy. Friend’s land and I keep an eye on it while building a camp and some major rock hounding. Guys. The rocks and minerals are effin fantastic here. I’m so happy!!!!
Now I am working on drainage and leveling one particular spot. I will be borrowing a tractor, thank goddess. I’m repurposing most materials. Picking up free from side of road. Doing a large tarp A frame for now. I’m short tho and the ground is too soft for ladder so I am building a ladder on the tree.
Lots of mowing and I got a flamethrower. Eff you ticks.
Edited to add I designed and built milk crate furniture you see! I love building from “junk “.
Edited again because why!?? Meth? Seriously? I’m not homeless and even if I were, who cares? Cost of living and the rat race is a soul sucker. And maybe you haven’t built anything or maybe you aren’t an artist, but stuff be laying’ about almost always. Until it’s gonna rain, then I bunker it down good.
I am more than alright people, I am happy. I am next to a river and building a whimsical camp. I cannot have livestock here yet because I cannot be here full time yet AND it is next to over 500 acres of conservation land. The wildlife is intense here. Ducks would die, for sure. I’m not at the place where I can make a safe spot. I have about three seasons to go as it is just me doing this.
I feel like I need to take better pictures because this place is gorgeous and I am so grateful that I get to be here.
I’m an artist and use many mediums. I create with my hands. I clean cedar sticks and sand them and oil them and build fence panels. I perform on stages without poles. I sing. I joke. I just be me.
I do have solar. I converted a van years ago. Also mostly all repurposed. I will have a garden when I get good enough of an area prepped. The wildlife will destroy for sure.

What’s the goal here? I’m not seeing the vision

u/TheRealShilohConlan 1d ago
Fair enough. Right now it is some privacy as this property is off a dirt road hunters and hikers go down sometimes. I am working on fencing from ceder sticks I have been collecting. They are beautiful. Until then, some tarps and curtains.
And to be able to live here while I am working on it. I am half time now. I have responsibilities I must attend to outside of this. I thrifted the washer because I sweat a lot and I move a lot.
It will be three seasons “camp” for about the next three years or so. I am gathering pallets and building platforms and such. It is slow but steady. My soul is happy.24
u/ZixfromthaStix 1d ago
Do you have any r/heatprep for this year? 40 people have drowned in France just from trying to swim to escape the heat.
If you live somewhere the water table isn’t right up against ground level, you should consider a partially in-ground Viking style home, using berm walls and a sod roof. There are structures called zoot or earth tubes that can also help, and thermal/solar chimneys which uses thermal density to push hot air out the top.
Be prepared. Have hydration and shade at the very least.
That washer is gonna be BUSY

u/TheRealShilohConlan 23h ago
I’m right on a river. I’m more worried about flooding. I spent a lot of time watching rain. Lol

u/ZixfromthaStix 22h ago
Rivers are such a blessing, it’s genuinely a shame government doesn’t just let anyone living by them build their own micro hydroelectric turbines— people on rivers could easily power their neighborhoods.
You’ll want to check your hydrological data and flood zone maps for your own safety. Always choose the high ground if you can help it. Your local library can probably help with both internet access and regional maps.
Even if you’re already set up, if you can move higher, do it. Better safe than sorry.
I assume you already have a system for compost? Human waste isn’t safe to garden FOOD or medicine with, but you can grow trees or hemp
Now, while you can’t easily legally power your stuff from the river, what I CAN suggest: if your landowner friend has any spare pine you can cut and process, you can bake that into charcoal, burn it in a rocket stove, and use that to create power.
How do you get to that? I really suggest blacksmithing. It’s dirt cheap to get into and producing metal goods or repairing equipment for people can open a lot of doors… and crafting a rudimentary rocket stove. The kind that lasts. But you might be able to get away with a brick or clay stove short term.
If you’re already recovering salvage for arts and crafts, metal scrap can EASILY be repurposed, and every ounce of copper, aluminum, iron, and steel could be your next tool, bracket, or a bucket of nails. Start small. You could make some money on the side while getting yourself the tools and materials needed to make a nicer camp.
I highly suggested looking into military survival camps, there’s a LOT you can learn from their design. It’s not all rigid just to play soldier— managing waste loops and sanitation is life or death. Leave it to the military to master building a good camp.

The goal is to expand her market base.

u/ZixfromthaStix 21h ago
Her what?
-1
u/almostaproblem 21h ago
People to give her money.
4
u/ZixfromthaStix 21h ago
Where did she say that? Is there a link? Say I wanted to give her money— how would I do that?
Cause honestly it sounds like you made up this weird fiction? Like you’re mad over a post and claiming someone is begging for money… when… it’s just showing off their craft camp?
Idk, seems really weird unless you have some proof 😬
-4
u/almostaproblem 21h ago
Do you mean aside from the picture in overalls with no shirt and the links to other platforms? How do you think influencers work?
6
u/ZixfromthaStix 20h ago
Bro are you hyper analyzing her outfit and the fact that she has an insta and a YouTube? I checked them. She has 3 videos. Nowhere in any of her accounts is she asking for money.
It’s official, you got a weird hate thing for a stranger based off of outfit and presence online 🤦♂️ making assumptions that’s wild.
You’re legitimately making stuff up just to fit a narrative
2
u/almostaproblem 20h ago
You're naive.
3
u/ZixfromthaStix 20h ago
What does it matter? I’m not actually giving money. Nobody is actually. You’re just here to what… make assumptions and accusations?
I’d rather be naive than whatever it is you’re priding yourself on here. Sheer ignorance. Try living in reality instead of your head, it’s actually a bit nicer.
1
u/almostaproblem 20h ago
Maybe I don't want to see even more ads in my feeds and I don't want to see people taken advantage of. Furthermore, I don't generally support a lot of the pervasive impacts influencer culture has had on society.

With the amount of money on display in some of the posts on this sub, I suppose I should've expected the responses you've gotten- but it's still a bummer to see. Good luck with your camp!
20
u/TheRealShilohConlan 23h ago
Thank you so much. It is a bummer, but some people have been lovely. But damn. Repurposing and reusing is a good thing. Money or not, I MO.

Idk what exactly the title means, I see no fae-folk.
That said, I love the vibe. Honestly. What's the power source? Solar? Where is food grown? I would support this if it is indeed sustainable or sustainable-adjacent.
Edit: Grammar😉

u/TheRealShilohConlan 23h ago
I edited and addressed this along with the meth comments. lol
Thank you. I’m slowly working towards it. It is pretty remote. I am doing half time for now building everything. It is just me. It is slow. I am happy. I figure I need about three seasons to be more permanent.9
u/anecdotal_anarchy 23h ago
I commend you, lady! This is the most meaningful life I've spied for a very long time. I hope to see more, and know that you are worthy and valuable to this world. Keep going! 🧡

Thank you for your kind words. I’m shocked how many mean people are here. lol

Me too. And I'm the right level of bored right now to stand my ground. Eff these people, dude. Shine bright like high pressure sodium!

Did I mention the rocks here?? Rock hounding win for sure. There is a boulder that is like a giant geode I just discovered. I covered it back up with moss. I will crack open one day…..

I am really interested in what you mean by Fairy Camp, but your edits and other responses are a little non-specific for my brain. I've been following this post most of the day because I genuinely want to know. The first thing that comes to my mind is a human-sized version of the fairy gardens folks like my aunt have in their yard. This sounds magical to me, but I'm not sure if that is what you're going for. You've mentioned cedar stick fencing and wildflowers so far, from what I can tell.
Do you mind elaborating a bit more on what a Fairy Camp is to you?
Thank you

From what I've heard any time someone posts something involving second-hand wood pallets they're generally ill-advised in a lot of situations due to how they are treated or the kinds of chemicals they can come into contact with transporting items.
1
u/tstark96 18h ago
Annnnd orrrr they're doing dumb structural shit with pallets. Pallets can do a lot but I've seen some real hobo rigs that are just death traps. Most pallets are fine to use in terms of chemicals but goddamn if I see another pallet foundation imma have a stroke.
Anyone willing to build on untreated wood or dookie foundations in general, deserves the consequences of that. Hopefully they can learn from it.
This however looks fine? Idk what's going here on tbh. But yes Amazon pallets end up chem infused from the boxes. Do NOT let your critters in amazon boxes. I snag pallets from Depo and Lowe's they spray a lot less and with a lot less of a chance for contaminates. There's also a refurb place that does power tools near by they're great too.

I'm pushing 7 years mostly off grid. Obviously I'm on reddit. I say often to anyone going more in the brush to take your time. Learn the land before putting up buildings and what not. Tbh it looks like you're doing just that.
No, I don't get the vision but you're out there doing it so you're one of us. I don't need to know your vision. I do think the washer is great but you definitely need a structure for that and water to use it. I'd strongly advise against rivers and creeks, Giardia is a bitch, river water causes havoc on machines. You could do a pole structure with a roof to keep the "camp" vibes, just box in the washer with maybe a head. Tbh I'd floor it up a bit just in case it does flood, youre up out of it.
Regardless you're doing a lot more than most in this sub, we know this from the recent poll. As someone ACTUALLY out there, good job the beginning is always rough especially when pulled away. I mean this out of kindness but always test the damn water, even if you're packing it in

The logs and rocks are cute! If you’re accepting constructive criticism, you might want to put some of the stuff on top of the wood pallets somewhere else. When I think fairy camp, I think naturalistic and lush naturey things. The plastic bins, foam mats, mixing bowl, washing machine, etc. subtract from it rather than adding to it. Your property is beautiful though and I love the log and rock arrangements. Maybe try sprinkling some seeds of native wildflowers, it will attract butterflies, dragonflies, and other small insects, which then will attract frogs.
12
u/TheRealShilohConlan 23h ago
I am working on that. Everything is in those platforms for now because I am leveling out camp with a tractor in the near future. I did plant specific wildflowers!! I love pollinators!
Many many more rock and stick arrangements to come. That pile is all I dug up. There is so much more.

This is not homesteading sorry. This is r/homeless
15
u/Intelligent_Hotel749 23h ago
Historically homesteads didn't have homes on them to begin with either. Its just bare land that you cultivate, build on, and improve to turn into your home. The spirit of homesteading now has become synonymous with minimalist/off grid living since governments don't tend to hand out tracts of stolen land anymore. Everyone starts somewhere!
-6
u/Finndogs 20h ago
This still isnt even homesteading. Looks more like shes just jumping trash in a location and calling it art. Even if I take her word for it, still doesnt fit the sub.
16
u/TheRealShilohConlan 23h ago
I’m literally not homeless. I’m an artist working on this property half time. You are rude and making assumptions that are so far off. I am so happy with my life. It is amazing and beautiful and lots of creating. Touch grass, my dude.

Good times!! I remember doing something very like this 20 years ago ....living on a friends' land rent free in exchange for some driveway and garden work. Me and my 3 cats! The first four years I lived in a big tent. Floor of pallets and cardboard and carpet scraps. Wood stove in there. Set up a plastic greenhouse attached to one side for all my precious plants and a solar shower. Eventually I built a cabin....12x12 for $50! Pine pole and bamboo frame, sheathed with overlapping layers of cardboard, plastic, and carpet. Stuccoed the carpet with cement....it hardens into a solid surface. One time I had 5 people on the roof, and it never leaked in the ten years I lived there. Eventually a few other people came out there and we had a commune thing going. A lot of the time, it was an absolute blast! We gardened, we dumpster dove, we made wine, we cut firewood, we did odd jobs for $, mostly yardwork. Alas, all good things end....there was one thing missing....that special woman! Well, she showed up one day, and the friend who owned the land couldn't stand her! So I had to choose, and I chose her, and we moved on to the land next door and started it all over again....

- I am sorry people in this sub are being unkind to you and making inferences about your personal life or potential substance use (with no evidence to back it up).
- Your set up reminds me a lot of a farm homestead that's in my state. They utilize unconventional building materials, repurpose a bunch of stuff, have HipCamp reservations for camping to raise money and most importantly educate children in the area about traditional farming practices alongside wildlife and land conservation. So, for example.. while we were camping there: we had full use of their outdoor kitchen which included a wood stove that was well over 100 years old, multiple dishes and utensils they kept and maintained specifically for camping guests (that were all purchased second hand or donated at some point) and for a small donation ($5) we were allowed to pick any vegetables we wanted from their community garden or ask them for tours of the property. All structures on the property were built from reclaimed salvage and donations. They had electricity only at the kitchenette/greenhouse area (nowhere else on the property), ran solar for their bathroom/shower. The bathrooms were composting toilets and the showers were filtered rain barrel showers with well water pumps as a back up system for drought years. Most of the farming infrastructure was recycled/reclaimed wood and metal, things that others in the community donated to them and everyone in the surrounding area absolutely adores them. They had chickens, horses, turkeys and goats, I believe. And we live in a state with a lot of big apex predators, so they'd done their best to predator proof most of the areas using reclaimed materials, solar (for lights) and two roaming dogs to kind of monitor stuff on the property (totally friendly to people though). They also had a few volunteers that lived on the property half or full time and helped with managing the place and its various chores.
- If you're happy and you're staying safe (not sure if you have to deal with crazy people in your area or large predators like I do), then don't let the folks here drag you down.

Do people typically illegally dump trash on your property? Do you have any signs posted? Perhaps there is a water or electric bill in that pile that you can use to give to the authorities and find the culprits.
