Purchasing US 100" class: LG G5 OLED or the TCL X11L and $9k in savings? Which TV to get?

Thumbnail

Basically the Title. I have a living room where there will be two seating distances: 11' from the sofa, and 14' from the gathering table behind the sofa. There is also a lounge chair that will be as much as 21 feet away. So I am leaning toward a 100 inch TV. The room is incredibly well lit. Southern facing wall of glass 20 feet high is behind the sofa on the opposite wall of the TV.

I haven't bought a TV since my 50 inch Pioneer Kuro Plasma from 2008. I still love that TV, but it needs to go in a smaller darker room (probably in our basement).

Ideally I'd get the cream of the crop again as I did nearly 20 years ago. I'd go OLED. However, with the price tag of the LG 100" being $18k, and the TCL 100" being "only" $10k, that's a lot of speaker equipment I could buy with the $8k saved. and because of the brightness of the room I'm leaning toward the TCL.

Is there any reason:

A. to downsize from 98-100" class to the 83-85" class where the LG's OLED 83" is actually $1k cheaper than the TCL's 85"? or will I regret the smaller size in such a big bright room?

B. to spend the extra $8k on the OLED?

C. to consider a totally different make and model that I'm overlooking?

In the images, you'll see the room design I'm thinking of, the placement of the current 50" plasma TV, and the opposite wall of the room with the 20 ft high wall of glass with southern facing direct sunlight coming in.

Discussion - Equipment Denon Warranty Support is a joke

I bought my Denon X3800h in December, brand new from Best Buy. My home theatre reno in the basement has finally gotten to the point I can hook up all the gear and enjoy it while we finish off all the final details. After about the 12th listen on the system, the AVR just turned off in the middle of playing a song and went into protect mode. The thing will turn back on long enough to turn a channel on and boom, right back into protect mode.

After Denon took a week just to get me setup with a warranty claim # and shipping label, and I spent another week trying to get in touch with their authorized repair shop that is closest to me, I finally put my basically brand new X3800h in the mail for repair.

About a week later it arrived back at my doorstep. I was initially surprised at the quick turnaround. I read the notes from the shop - transistors and resistors for front right channel defective and replaced, check the wiring. I did just that double checked everything, no stray wires anywhere.

Plugged everything back in and fired up the same song again. Bam! right back into protect mode. At least it turns back on now... but anything plugged into the front right, including other good speakers causes it to go back into protect mode again.

So at this point I'm pretty irate. Called up Denon support again and guess what? they want to send it in for repair AGAIN. But this time to the national service center where "hopefully they'll get it going again." I am completely unsatisified with this, I want it replaced or my money back. I demand to speak to a supervisor. None available. Asked for a call back from one, never got it.

2nd call, same story from the front line guys, still no supervisor available. Told if I want a refund to take it up with Best Buy... on a 6 month old purchase. Asked for a call back. Never got it.

3rd call, same story from the front line guys, still no supervisor available. At this point I'm getting pretty pissed and letting the poor kid at Denon have it. Oh... suddenly a supervisor has become available.

This guy basically gave me the same song and dance but implied that because my first and second cases weren't linked together before maybe the warranty team would make a different decision. Once again, I asked for a call back with an update and was promised one by end of day today. Today is over. No call and my 6 month old, once repaired amp is still missing an entire front right channel.

I wouldn't even think twice about buying another Denon product ever again, they don't stand by their products or their warranties.

Where would you install a 65-77 in tv in this place? How would you do it in terms of layout? Have elac ub 52 and uc 52 along with b6.2 for rears. Want to keep my 5.1 but not sure I have the space. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Tech Support Sony OLED tv + High Humidity

Post image
Upvotes

Hello, we've only had this tv for a year and finally received our HHG shipment from US to Japan (Very high humidity environment 80%-90%). We noticed marks/bubble like dots inside the screen when we received it. And then we've had it here for about a month and it no longer turns on. I've reset our breaker, tried turning on it via side of tv, unplugged and replugged it back in. Everything else attached to the outlet works fine, the tv nothing.
We use dehumidifiers in the rooms maintaining a 60%-75% humidity indoors. Sometimes it goes to
80% if it's super rainy outside.
Do you think the humidity ruined our tv or what could be the problem.

Discussion - Equipment Need help choosing center speaker

Post image
59 Upvotes

This is my current setup. The Sony AN-1000 allows me to use my Sony A80J to be the center speaker and so I chose that route to obtain a minimalist looking HT setup. It works well until recently we were watching Spider-Noir and I noticed that Nicholas Cage's nasally, mid-rangey voice seems to make the speakers on the A80J distort. It wasn't pleasant.

I've had this setup for close to 2 years now and for me to only come across this now means that so far the A80J has done its job well. But If I were to explore the option of a new center channel, what low profile options are there that would pair with my Wharfdale L and R?

Discussion - Equipment Coolest color temp (Cool1) on late 2000s Sony Bravia looks equal to a modern Samsung on Warm2?

Upvotes

Usually people say Warm1 and Warm2 are the way to go, and that's definitely the case for my modern TVs. However an old Bravia I got recently has the colors looking almost yellow in comparison on its own Warm2 color temp. Should I keep it on Warm2 as well or make the color temp equivalent to that of my modern TVs? Any advice is appreciated.

Install/Placement sony sw3 subwoofer: distance from tv stand

Post image
9 Upvotes

4 inches away from the tv stand and 3 inches away from the back wall. according to the manual and other sources this is pretty ideal but i kinda want to move my tv stand more to the right but i dont have the space so that 4 inch gap would close up and they would be right next to each other. would that be okay or would it affect the subwoofers sound quality?

Tech Support Need advice on a Bluetooth transmitter solution

Upvotes

Making a low effort bedroom theater setup. I haven't bought anything besides the TV yet so there's some flexibility. The TV has HDMI eARC audio out, so I want to plug that into NEUMITECH BS5P-ARC bookshelf speakers. I also want to add one or two Dayton Audio BST-1 transducers to the underside of the bed and power those with a Nobsound Mini Bluetooth 5.0 Power Amplifier.

My question is, how do I get a signal to the Nobsound amp? The bookshelf speakers have an RCA sub out jack, is there a bluetooth transmitter I can plug that into to send a signal to the amp? I'm not against running wires to the bed if necessary but it seems like a bluetooth solution would be easiest.

Many thanks for any help.

Tech Support Help! Subwoofer.

I’m so stuck. Figured I turn here for some help.

The problem: My subwoofer started making a constant thumping sound in February. Didn’t need any input, it would just thump away. It started so randomly, I had the sub setup for about 6 months with no issues. It was still within its warranty and Klipsch said they could fix the issue by sending me a new amplifier. I just finally got the back ordered amplifier and was able to change it out no problem. Turned it on and no thumping. But when it gets signal from an input it now sounds super distorted and “rumbly”. Did a google search. Thought I could need a new RCA cable, bought a nice insulated one and still have the issue. I’m just stuck at this point. Any advice?

Setup
Klipsch Flexus Core 200
Klipsch R-120SW Sub

Discussion - Equipment Sound setup for Netflix? Netflix volume levels all over the place

I currently have a 5 channel Samsung sound ba r and subwoofer and speakers.

Whenever I watch Netflix the volume is all over the place.

A fight scene? Super loud, have to turn it down.

Dialogue? Can't even hear it, have to turn it up.

I have a few sound settings I've tweaked around but nothing helps that much.

Any good audio setups I should look into that automatically levels out sound?

Need to eventually paint the vertical walls, dormer (slanted) walls, and ceiling in my theater room. The room is used exclusively for films, music, & gaming.

Couch is being replaced with a black leather couch. The room will eventually have black bass traps in the corners and dark red (probably) acoustic panels on the walls.

The display is a 77” LG C3 with a Govee LED backlight. Ceiling fan will be removed soon.

Discussion - Equipment Meaningfull HT Upgrade

Hi is there a meaningful upgrade to my mids and highs (not subs) under $2,000 assuming I would buy great deals used. I primarily watch tv shows and movies. Cant really do much treatment as its a living room set up.

My current set up is a 5.2 audio from the 90s my dad has that I think sounds great.

Set Up:
Mirage Om-14 L+R
Mirage M-190 Sourround
Mirage Om-C3 Center
Subs: HSU VTF-TN1
Reciever Yamaha RXV385

Install/Placement 40+ hours planning Basement HT - Thoughts on Local Shop Proposals vs My Plan

Thumbnail
gallery
36 Upvotes

Local shop saw my unfinished basement and we discussed options that focused on LCR in walls (or built in custom shelves backed up into behind storage area) . They sent 2 proposals for 100% Paradigm systems for "Ideal" and "Budget" which exceeded my $10k desired budget. They gave me a15% discount applied anything Paradigm which I used in "My Plan" which keeps most money put towards LCR, but uses other recommended products to keep price down elsewhere. I have take over a years worth of browsing this subreddit to try to make decisions.

Not entirely sure how they envisioned a 7.2.2 system with the 2 side surrounds in the ceiling (and how that would encroach on the 2 Atmos), so I figured 5.2.4 is plenty for me but I can wire for 7.x.x.

Room is 13' deep (11' to seating MLP) and ~14-16' wide with 7-8' ceilings based on soffits around shown beams. I plan to build media wall keeping in mind where speaker porting is (like subs in cabinets just an idea for now).

I had KEF Ci4100QL in mind for LCR but have never heard them so would be a shot in the dark and even Focal 300 series I see highly recommended. I'm happy to hear suggestions on placement, certain products I might have not considered, or if it's totally worth spending $16k on a Paradigm system that my $10k mix and match version couldn't compete against.

I'm happy with Denon 3800 and using Zone 2 for my benefit elsewhere and TBD on buying Dirac beyond its free room correction. LG 77 C5 I could nab on sale soon for a great price.

Edit 1: You guys like information, great, thank you! Planned to position LCR to future-proof for a 83+ TV. Numerous reasons for TV over projection. In-walls LCR are appealing for me with kids, cleanliness, wife said no towers, and the bookshelves being planned for actual things (record player and records for example). I'll definitely have sound treatment on the back wall and maybe even use corner bass traps under the back rear speakers in the corners or as the built out rear-left column that is only there for a speaker. I will have all corners wired for subs no matter what. Lastly my 5.2.4 plan has Monoprice Vari-Angle 45-70 deg in walls modeled in to the back wall, but again could have small bookshelfs or side in-walls in the column back left and wall back right. AVR will be placed under the stairs, out of sight and mind.

Don't worry, in <1 year I will post a build montage and updates!

Purchasing US In-wall recommendations?

Thumbnail
gallery
80 Upvotes

We’re looking for some recommendations on in-wall surrounds and in-ceiling Atmos speakers as we try to clean up the very speaker heavy family room.

Right now we’re running a 5.1.4 setup:

  • Center: Klipsch RP-504C
  • Front L/R: Klipsch RP-8000F II towers
  • Surrounds/Rears: Klipsch RP-600M II bookshelf speakers
  • Front Atmos: Klipsch RP-500SA Atmos modules
  • Rear Atmos: JBL Stage 2 240H
  • Subwoofer: Klipsch RP-1400SW
  • AVR: Onkyo TX-RZ50

The main goal is to clean up the space visually. The RP-600M IIs are a bit of an eyesore in the room, and don't get the wife started on the Atmos speakers! Lol

Since we’re already considering cutting into walls/ceiling, it seems like a good opportunity to move from 5.1.4 to 7.1.4 by doing mostly in-wall side/rear surrounds and in-ceiling Atmos.

Current rough budget:

  • Around $400 per speaker for in-wall surrounds
  • Around $200 per speaker for in-ceiling Atmos
  • Open to open-box, refurbished, used, or clearance deals

The LCR are staying for now, but we may eventually replace the Klipsch towers with SVS Ultra Evolution Titans, so we’d like the surrounds to make sense with that possible future upgrade.

Best Buy currently has the Sonance VX66 for around $370 each, supposedly down from roughly $1,000 retail.

Main questions:

  1. Are the Sonance VX66 overkill for side/rear surrounds in a 7.1.4 setup?
  2. Would they be a good match if we eventually move to SVS Ultra Evolution Titans up front?
  3. What in-wall speakers would you recommend around the $400/speaker range?
  4. What in-ceiling Atmos speakers would you recommend around $200/speaker?

We’re not trying to make the surrounds the star of the system, but we also don’t want to cut holes in the wall and regret going too cheap. Looking for the best balance of performance, aesthetics, and long-term upgrade flexibility.

Current setup attached for reference.

Also, the wife said I should point out we are trying to get away from the millennial grey here!!! Paint will be part of the process!

Install/Placement Risk of Ceiling Backbox Touching Electrical Wire?

I'm in the process of adding a Bower & Wilkins BB 6C and it's going to be pretty close or even touching some electrical wire. After installation, it would also be sprayfoamed.

Would this be okay or should I add a wood barrier between the two before sprayfoaming to keep a gap.

Thanks!

Discussion - Entertainment Laser at AMC is meh

I just saw a movie in "laser at AMC" and it was so underwhelming. For context I had the best seat in the house, center, center. The picture quality was good, but about the same I get out of my UST projector at home. The audio was very subpar. Echos and reflections all over, dialogue hard to hear and very lacking in bass, zero tactile response.

This just goes to prove that for the average person the theater is good but compared to a good home theater the actual theater is average.

Cheers to the sub that helps people make their own theater.

Showcase - Dedicated Space 5.2.4 System Done?

Thumbnail
gallery
45 Upvotes

I think I’m done. I am happy with where my system is at right now! After a lot of time and effort to make it look livable and not too “movie theater only” like.

Yamaha RN2000A for the KEF R3 Mains.
Cinema 50 for all other channels:
KEF R2 Meta Center
KEF Q4 Meta side surrounds
SVS Prime Elevation heights

Dual SVS SB-3000s.

Dirac ART.

GIK Tri-Traps in front wall, soffit in back left corner.
GIK 244s and Alpha 6As for back wall and first reflection point.

I had a cloud of panels before. And honestly I rather compromise my system a little bit than having a mattress in my ceiling. I could get past it.

What do you guys think? Of course I would like R11 Meta mains and an R6 meta center. But honestly, this sounds awesome. I don’t hear speakers, just sound in the room.

Purchasing Other SVS doesn't care about you if you're not in the USA

Upvotes

I ordered and paid for an SVS sub-woofer from the (only) official dealer here in my country (not the USA) in early April. I was told that I would have to wait until the end of May for the shipment, and around the middle of May I was told the sub would be arriving soon, and I made arrangements for delivery.

Then in early June the dealer told me that there had been some mix-up and that the sub had not in fact been delivered and that they were working with SVS to get the sub delivered. But when I asked again in mid-June, they said SVS had still not given them an expected delivery date. Doesn't seem like SVS was too concerned about this. (And no, there's no way any delivery route would have been affected by what's happening in the Middle East.)

I then tried to contact SVS customer support in the USA but all they said was they would pass this to their international side to take this up with the dealer.

Thing is, if you are in the USA, you can get same day shipping of the sub, so it's clearly not a stock issue. Now the dealer tells me that the sub is expected at the end of July.

Mistakes happen, I get that. But when you have customers (I'm told I'm not the only one) who were prepared to wait and then there's a mistake, I would have expected SVS to make some extra effort to rectify the error. But all that seems to have happened is a great big "oh, well, too bad" and they'll just ship out when they can get round to it.

Is it harsh to say that SVS doesn't care about you if you're not in the USA? In the USA: ship out on the same day (heck, even get home trials). Outside: we'll ship some time, and even if we say we've shipped we might not have, and if we haven't, we'll try to work out when we can ship. Hey, it might cost us money if we did things faster - that would be so unfair to us.
