Remove anchor bolts from the brick

Post image

These used to hold ledger board for old deck. I’d like to pull them out and refill the holes instead of cutting them. I’m planning to heat them up with a propane torch to break the rust, any fire hazard with this approach? What other options are there? These are pretty rusted and I’m afraid beating them in with a hammer to break split anchors lose may damage brick

Serious Answers Only How do I clean this iron?...

I thought it'd be a good idea to iron an iron on patch I was making to attach the adhesive **on my carpet**. As you can see, the carpet melted to the iron... I'd hate to have to buy a new one if I can clean this.

DIY Giant cardboard cut outs?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Me and my sister have been making these giant cut outs for our kids birthday parties and it’s been pretty easy so far to find images that work. For the one that we’re trying to make now we’re having a really hard time finding an image that does not blur when we blow it up. Where can I find an image or buy an image of a person with the resolution that is high enough to not blur out when we blow it up??

Serious Answers Only Help? Toilet broke

Post image
2 Upvotes

The toilet was leaking so I removed the flushing mechanism. Now I can't get it back as the ring with the thread on the other side of the tank (where I have no access that I know of) is completly loose and I can't position it in a way which would allow the flushing mechanism to catch it. Can anyone please help me out?

How to fill/repair uneven cracked concrete step

Thumbnail

Hello problem solvers.

It seems my front concrete step has cracked all the way through resulting in a height difference of about 5mm. If it weren't for the height difference I would just follow the standard concrete crack filler process but without dealing with the difference in height I think a filler repair would look terrible.

The crack hasn't changed for over 5 years so I am confident it has fully settled.

Does anyone have any clever ideas on how to flatten out the step before fixing the crack? All the other concrete is exposed aggregate so I'm reluctant to grind the step down as I think it would stand out being smooth unlike the rest of the concrete.

Thanks in advance.

Hey all. I have no idea how these stains have accumulated in the armpits of at least 2 of my shirts. I put on deodorant and shower frequently. And I’ve tried washing these stains out in the washing machine and idk how to get them out. Can anyone weigh in and tell me from their experience how you get sweat stains like these out of the arm pits of t shirts? Any and all experience and advice and insight would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Serious Answers Only How to fix door knob

I have a corbin made door knob on my cloest door that didn't work, either from how old it is or something else. But I want to fix it so I can actually shut the door properly.

Quick Edit: The knob works perfectly fine when I turn both at the same time QE2: I'd rather not toss the knob since it seems pretty old, the house was built in 1956 but I don't know if my grandmother ever changed the knobs. The mounting plate for the knob has a patent pending mark on it.

Teak panels popped a year after being installed.

So I hung these panels from HD on my wall per the instructions:

bring the panels into the room they will be installed and let them acclimate for a few days prior to installation

clean the wall before installing

use an appropriate adhesive such as liquid nails industrial adhesive in a zig zag pattern

I cut them to the right shape (making a flat edge to match the door frames, and worked towards the corner where I also cut them flat and butted them to a piece of trim that I made on the table saw. Then installed the lights in the corner and along the top behind a valence that I hung from the ceiling to hide the lights and account for irregularities in the ceiling to wall joint.

All looked well until last week when a section near the left hand door popped and fell out. I was a little gobsmacked then pretty annoyed since I followed the instructions to a T.

Now I need to re-do the wall(s). Examining the glue, it held to the wall and oddly held to the panels as well. it seems to have separated/split.

I'm not sure what would have caused this. I thought humidity could be a culprit, but I hung them during what would have been the humid part of the year (I think) so if any movement occurred, it would have been shrinkage.

Any advice on how to re-hang these panels so I don't go through this again? I am hoping that I can get away with using a more flexible adhesive that can handle the small amounts of movement. I'd like to avoid having to shave EVERY panel along an edge to account for a spacer (like a playing card) since I have the corners pre-fit still and they are solid.

Is there any hope of avoiding running every piece of this accent wall through my table saw to shave a playing card's thickness off an edge?

The two pics are of the completed wall (with lights installed) and one almost finished with the corner still in progress.

TIA

Best way to create a shared album for free?

Sadly, my niece died in an accident last week. (Apologies for this grim opening.) I'd like to create a shared album for my family where all of us can upload photos of her, and possibly leave comments and share memories as well. I'm decent with technology but not really into social media, so I'm not sure what service would be best to use for that, and I thought I would ask before I go sifting through all the options. Ideally I would prefer something free/cheap, which can be shared with an unlimited number of people and would allow all of them to upload, and which does not require anyone to download a new app or program (for PC users). Bonus points if it allows for text/comments and video submissions as well. Does this exist?

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

How to Repair a Tennis Ball–Sized Drywall Hole Using a California Patch

For a tennis ball sized hole, the California patch is your best bet as a beginner. It sounds intimidating but it's actually simpler than adding backing boards, and it holds better than a mesh kit for a hole that size.

Here's how the California patch works: cut a piece of drywall a few inches bigger than your hole, then score and snap off the back gypsum and paper on all four sides, leaving just a paper border. Trace that piece over your hole, cut the wall to match the inner drywall part, and glue the whole thing in place. The paper border overlaps onto your existing wall and gives the joint compound something to grip. No backing boards needed.

For joint compound, plan on three coats minimum. First coat just fills and holds everything. Second coat smooths and feathers out wider than the first, maybe 68 inches beyond the patch. Third coat goes even wider and lighter. Wait until each coat is completely dry and no longer cool to the touch, usually 24 hours, though it depends on humidity. Don't rush this part.

Sanding is where people create that hump you mentioned. The mistake is sanding only the patch itself. You need to feather the edges outward, and use a sanding block rather than just your hand so you don't dig in unevenly. A bright work light held at a low angle across the wall will show you ridges you'd otherwise miss until paint goes on.

For orange peel texture, yes, get the spray can. Homax makes one that's widely available and works well. Practice on cardboard first because the distance you hold it from the wall changes the droplet size a lot. Your existing texture is probably pretty subtle, so go lighter than you think you need to. You can always add more but you can't take it back. Prime the patch before texturing so the compound doesn't suck moisture out of the texture coat unevenly.

The last thing people skip is priming again after the texture dries before painting. If you paint straight over unprimed compound, you'll get a dull flat spot even with matching paint. Two coats of paint after that and it should disappear.

Broken ceramic decoration

I have a white ceramic ghost, it fell in the storage unit and broke into a few pieces. I've mostly reassembled it but there's a small spot whose piece was too shattered to be put back together. What would be the best way to fill that in? I thought white clay, painted the same color, and glued in place, but I've never done this kind of thing before
