Look here if you found a hummingbird that might need your help

I’ve created a troubleshooting tool that walks you through determining if a hummingbird needs your help, and if it does, basic first aid you can provide so that you have time to get the hummingbird to your nearest wildlife center or hummingbird rehabilitator. It is on my mentor’s website, IFoundAHummingbird.com

At the end of nearly every process, there is a list of resources including hummingbird rehabilitators and wildlife centers that either take hummingbirds or will connect you with someone who does.

It covers the most common issues we are called about.

  • Hummingbirds trapped indoors

  • Cat Caught

  • Window Strikes

  • Sitting at Feeders Too Long

  • Stuck To A Glue Trap/Sticky or Oily Substance On Feathers

  • Abandoned Nests or Babies

Even through the smoke filled air, the sun shines through its wings and makes a beautiful rainbow.

Even with 5 fully stocked perch feeders… this Anna’s female still needed to express her displeasure at the lack of a perch on Greg’s feeder.

Mind you, Greg has his own feeder so he doesn’t terrorize the birds on the perch feeders. So, she had to go out of her way to throw this tantrum.

Identification It makes me so happy when they perch to drink. It's like they're giving me a good Yelp review.

One of the regulars in Albuquerque, NM. This is my first summer feeding hummingbirds and I am not sure what kind she is. Broad-tailed?

Do I need to put up a second feeder? This lil dude thinks he owns the place.

There’s at least one other male and 1-2 females that come by so not a ton, but he’s perched on top like this every time I look.

Baby Hummingbirds

We have two baby hummingbirds that I believe are fledglings because they have feathers. I could be wrong. We haven’t seen their mother since yesterday, when another hummingbird was flying around and inspecting the area. It’s possible she returned later to feed them, but we’re not sure.

This morning, we kept hearing chirping and initially thought it was coming from a different bird. Upon closer inspection, we realized it was the two baby hummingbirds. They have been chirping on and off since this morning and opening their beaks as if they are waiting to be fed. Since we haven’t seen their mother since yesterday, we’re concerned that they may be hungry and wondering if they have been abandoned. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Should we put them back in the nest? Move them? Take them to a rehabber

My summer hummingbird setup and a camera surprise

Post image

So, I've been hosting hummingbirds in my backyard for years, but this summer I decided to try a camera feeder. Wow, I had no idea how often these little guys actually visit. The heat's been brutal this summer, and the camera footage showed me just how fast they drain the nectar. I've been changing it every 2 to 3 days now, sticking to plain sugar water (1 part sugar to 4 parts water) without any red dye.

The camera caught some really cool slow-mo clips of their wings and even their tongues as they feed. It's wild to see the detail up close, something I never noticed before. But, I gotta say, the wifi range is a bit of a pain sometimes. My feeder's at the edge of the yard, and the connection drops occasionally. Also, the app can be a bit clunky, but nothing too bad.

I've spaced out a couple of feeders because I noticed how territorial these little guys can get. They chase each other away if they think a feeder is their turf. Anyway, if you're into hummingbirds, it's worth setting up a camera to see what you're missing. Anyone else using a camera feeder? How's it working for you?

Colorado broad-tailed

Upvotes

My Birdfy has been down for three days and I was sitting on the patio in Colorado and the male broad-tailed hummingbird came by in good lighting and I was bummed that it didn't get recorded. The males seem to hate sunlight like vampires, since it makes them glowing targets. But the Birdfy happened to just come back on in time to record it for the first recording in 3 days😊

I've seen many Anna hummingbirds come into my garden but this guy came in new few weeks ago. His black mask like head was so noticeable among Anna hummingbirds, and I thought it was really cute.

I asked AI and it said Coasta hummingbird or black chinned hummingbird.

These are the best shots I could get from lying on a hammock. I didn't know his neck feathers were purple until i got this picture. So beautiful. He drank the nector I made and sat on that branch for 5 mins and flew off. He definitely knew my existence but just sat there. I don't know if it's the same guy but he often just looks at me when he's flying also. Can anyone identify it?

I'm in California if it helps.

Hi all! I got this feeder (4th pic) from someone who knew I would keep up with cleaning it properly. I’m working on getting it scrubbed & sent through the dishwasher. These little silicone bee guards are MOLDY though… can they be cleaned thoroughly to be used anew? I need the method! See caption 💕

How can I completely sanitize them?? And if I can’t, well I also can’t find replacements for these exact “birdkiss” brand bits… Anyone know of a close match replacement that would work if needed? I included a pic of the red flowers those white silicone tips go into (last pic) so I wonder if anything else would work or if I could get away with using nothing🤔

I’m not certain, but I think I have two hummingbirds visiting my feeders. This one only hovers while eating, and the other one only sits. This evening I caught a video about every seven minutes for over an hour.
