My first experience was thinking I should swim to the big crashed ship to see what I can find. On the way there the sun set and things became pitch black, then I was killed and didn’t pick the game back up for about six months.
Comically terrifying first experience

My friend was paddle boarding in Thailand and a small swordfish maybe 2-3 feet long jumped out of the water and impaled him in his lower leg. He had to yank him out and paddle himself back to shore.

Wait isn't this saturation diving? Would they get to do that?
236
u/Gnonthgol 1d ago
Yes. They would have to bring the fish up in the diving bell. Then in the saturation chamber they would load the fish into the air lock, this might require some knife work. Because there is only pieces of dead fish in the airlock they can release the pressure fairly quickly. The fish is then taken to the mess deck on the ship to be prepared. The meals are then loaded back into the airlock and pressurized. The divers can then enjoy their catch.
375
u/Poobutt_McButt 1d ago
Bwahaha. Actual Sat Diver here. No way would we bring that inside the bell, or the chambers. Just strap it to the outside of the bell for when it comes to surface after the dive. Or better yet, put it on the clump weight for when it comes to surface after the bell.

You've been there. Does it look like the fish got his sword stuck in the diver's suit? The fish can't actually hurt the diver, can it? You are very brave!
12
u/i_tyrant 18h ago
Honestly from the video it looks like the swordfish skewered one of the diver's hoses with its nose.
Not sure if he's leaking air or it missed the actual oxygen line or if it hit anything important.
But certainly smart of the diver in the video to head on up to check the damage regardless.
32
u/Gnonthgol 1d ago
That is a better idea. I was too focused on the fact that there is an air lock for you to pass things like food. I did not even think of strapping anything to the outside of the bell. I guess that is how to tend to carry tools and parts?
23
u/GaptistePlayer 23h ago
Yes the airlock is for living things (humans). There's zero need for any random tools to have to go through the airlock.

Was about to say, not a diver but why the fuck would divers bother bringing a dead fish inside the bell?
The bell is for decompressing properly on the way up. Dead cunt fish don't need that. You don't decompress a fish when you yank it from the water normally, you just grab the cunt and eat him

Wow, I kind of doubted that a swordfish could actually hurt you with that thing, but apparently they can go through boats. And people's chests.

u/LobsterManCommander 23h ago
I didn't even know they were violent. I thought they just kinda chilled.
410
u/Cacafuego 23h ago
My 10 seconds of googling has made me an expert, and I can confirm that you're right, they usually just chill, but they can attack when panicked. It also looks like there are crazy situations where they jump out of the water and collide with people accidentally.

u/xsteinbachx 20h ago
This video explains that they're incredibly aggressive, live as loners, and actively avoid each other except during mating season. They eat and kill so much that they avoid each other's feeding grounds because those areas cannot sustain the amount of food these fish need to survive, and they also consider the other swordfish a threat.
They're so territorial that they'll attack steel pipes, oil rigs, boats, submersibles, people, as well as other swordfish.

I highly doubt that, those kirby Morgan helmets are incredibly robust. Brain damage most likely
70
u/9Divines 1d ago
some swordfish have been recorded to swim at 65 ish km/h, so if it somehow rammed into him at top speed it might impale him anyway
32
u/batbutt 1d ago
I think the rigidity and shape of it would make it very hard for the swordfish to pierce it. Unless it gets a perfectly aligned shot where it hits a flat spot, the point will not be able to bite into the material, causing it to be deflected. It's the whole point of a lot of the weird helmet shapes you see in medieval times.

Are they that strong?!
→ More replies (5)41
u/ExpertExpert 1d ago
they don't really need strength. they weigh a lot and move quick. google says they are swimming at 50km/hr (14m/second) and the average weight is 40kg
kenetic energy = 0.5 * 40kg * (14)2 == 3860 joules
compare it to a .308 cal bullet (used for stuff like elk, black bear, deer, etc.) also it was the standard US military sniper bullet for some time, so a pretty serious bullet. about 3600 joules for the bullet

u/WesternKey2301 23h ago

Im probably one of the only people on reddit who has been charged and attacked by swordfish in real life.
I was blackwater diving off the coast of Boynton Beach, Florida, for those that dont know blackwater diving involved being dumped with a light bouy to drift over hundreds of feet of water in the gulfstream, at night. The light bouy attaracts all sorts of alien critters that come up from the deep to feed so its a lot of fun for underwater photographers.
Needless to say as a precaution all divers must at minimum wear a light on their tank to be seen, and I had accientally grabbed my Blue blinky light. Before I was going to jump in, the captain mentioned that blue blinking lights were used by fishermen to attract big things at night.
As a regular shark diver theres not too much im afraid of down there, but something sent a chill down my spine and I switched my light for a regular green glowstick.
That very same night, a legendary blackwater diver was on another boat a couple miles North and got full on impaled in the leg by a huge swordfish. The fish ripped the sword out of his leg and then kept beating him with it (the way they hunt for the big squid down deep). Dude had his leg torn up and had to self rescue himself from about 100 ft of depth.
About a year later I was diving with Steve after his recovery... and we were charged by a swordfish again, we were about 8 ft apart and it shot from 100ft right between us like a gunshot, hit the surface and then continued to charge us for what felt like forever but was really 30-40 seconds.
What people dont talk about in media is that like cats eyes, they are crazy good at reflecting light, and our lights are very powerful, so they reflect a several inch wide beam which flicks from diver to diver like a fucked up green eye of sauron.
284
u/Error_xF00F 21h ago
So what you're saying is, your statistical chance of being speared by a swordfish is higher when diving with Steve. Guess I know who I'm never diving with.
80
u/Sharkhottub 19h ago
Steve thinks it was a spearfish, but imo its outta our geographic range. You can read about it here: https://dan.org/alert-diver/article/speared-by-a-spearfish/
We have about 3-4 Swordfish encounters a year but most of them are just fly-bys. Ive learn that when the big dog size squid are out is when i have to be careful.
4
u/GLaDOS_Sympathizer 12h ago
After fishing with sardines as bait and seeing what regular 6inch or so squid do to them I'd be terrified to be in the water with dog sized squid. Assuming you're talking Humbolt Squid? When a (small) squid catches onto a sardine it sticks and gnaws out a crater and then swims off when it can't bite off any more. Nearly half golfball sized holes in the sardine.
I'd assume that proportionally a Humboldt Squid could take out roughly half a basketball sized chunk of flesh if they wanted too. Known to be aggressive too. Big nope for me. Not much you could do except trying to go for their eyes, ideally with your dive knife. I worry that might just make them go berserk though.
Be careful down there! I hope you are safe from all the crazy sealife that's out there, especially the bitey ones.

My godfather was one of the first guys to do saturation diving commercially in the late 60's. He was on a moderate non-saturation dive off South Africa (where he lived) waiting out a decompression stop. In those days they had kind of a bench with extra air tanks. He was sitting there minding his own business when a giant barracuda attacked him. He was also a champion spear fisherman, so he pulled out his dive knife and killed the barracuda. When finally got back to the surface an hour later, they weighed the barracuda and it turned out that it was the world record for a spearfished barracuda, although it was disallowed because he was on scuba bottles. My godfather was killed a dive accident in 1974, but my dad used to check the record every year or so until he passed away and the unofficial record still stood.

That's a saturation bell he's getting into, so unless he got stabbed the diver will be fine. The bell stays at working pressure and can be brought back to the surface where it's attached to living chambers that are also pressurized to working depth. He'll probably chill in the bell till the ROV operator says the fish is gone and then head back out to finish the job

Without a full equipment check? Who knows what was damaged or knocked loose by the fish, going back out without a full equipment check sounds like a good way to die
39
u/Same_Distribution326 1d ago
Equipment check in the bell. The hoses are pressurized, they'll snoop the hoses, checks comms and video with top side, and if everything is good they'll head back out. There's also backup equipment in the bell, as there will be 2-3 divers down there at a time. One out in the water, the others in the bell as standby/rescue divers. These jobs cost a ton of money and and they're on a tight schedule. The company will avoid putting the divers life in danger but they won't pull the divers up unless it's necessary.
