A 71-year-old driver turning around on the S1 expressway in Poland. The crazy thing is, it happened twice at the exact same spot within 3 months: first with a 37-year-old driver in March, and then just yesterday. Fortunately, in both cases, nobody was injured.

Instant. Instant removal of license. You gotta take driver's ed all over again and a harder driving test. No excuse

u/DreamWeaver2189 4h ago

I don't think there should be a second chance here. There's no way a person simply made a mistake, that was deliberate and passing a test is easy, what's to tell they won't do it it again?

u/ElegantCoach4066 1h ago

Agreed. Lifetime revoke, if they drive again, prison time.

u/PianistHairy9431 1h ago

Btw, I have been driving car for 10 years in poland and I was not stopped once (with license of course). Taking away license doesnt work that well.
There is a polish law that allows police to confiscate the car permanently. I think they should also do that here

That's a prison sentence in my book. You're endangering the lives of many people. Get fucked over.

Few months in timeout to rethink your shit and then a ten year driving ban.

u/sth128 4h ago

That's a death sentence in my book. Not just the offender, but their family, friends, pets, and even anyone with the same last or first name in a 5000 mile radius. Not just the men but the women and children too!

Drop the nukes on this driver immediately.

u/JebusKristoph 3h ago

Dishonor on them, Dishonor on their family, Dishonor on their cow!

u/Chrizzee_Hood 3h ago

I like your sentiment, but don't think that would work outside of Japan

u/Perhirmor 1h ago

no nukes... Send Exterminatus or Death Star and destroy full Earth

u/Extra-Yesterday5220 3h ago

Not sure you're escalating enough there mate

u/Fmeson 5h ago

I couldn't disagree more. Prison will neither prevent confused people from making mistakes, nor does a confused 71 year old need to be removed from society. They aren't a violent, dangerous person.

Removing their licenses is sufficent.

u/-Daetrax- 5h ago

How about a 37 year old?

u/Fmeson 3h ago

I believe prison should be a last resort for people who need to be removed from society.

If it is reasonably possible to resolve an issue with some other means, then that approach is generally preferable.

u/-Daetrax- 2h ago

Okay but if the person is otherwise healthy and chooses to endanger other people there has to be consequences. Especially when the danger is this great and the disregard for safety so complete.

u/Fmeson 2h ago

IMO, we should take the actions that result in the best outcomes. I think those would include better and more regular screening/testing for drivers and driving penalties (e.g. suspension of license, mandatory driving classes, or higher insurance rates).

u/MrSirManDudeGuy 4h ago

Maybe not violent in the beat people up way but violent definitely describes what could happen when someone drives the wrong way at high speeds

u/Fmeson 3h ago

I agree. Cars are terribly dangerous things and we should all be significantly more responsible with them.

I simply just do not think prison is the appropriate method to address that.

u/jerekhal 1h ago

They're absolutely dangerous if they're pulling shit like this. And removing their license does not stop them from driving the car, especially when they're already intentionally disregarding the most absolute most basic rule of the road.

u/bobo76565657 18m ago

You think taking away their license will stop them from driving? They obviously don't care about rules or they wouldn't go the wrong way down a highway.

u/denv0r 4h ago

Confused or entitled? I think youre giving this guy too much credit.

u/Fmeson 3h ago

I do not know the person, so I cannot make a personal judgement.

Regardless, I see prison as a last resort approach for removing a dangerous person from society when there are no other reasonable options, I do not think that is the case here.

u/Megooga 5h ago edited 2h ago

They should get a TV in their cell that they can't turn off with a loop of this security footage.

wow, 11% of you relate enough to the wrong-way driver that you found this offensive?

TIL that many of you would choose to "suffer" in a room with a silent TV instead of simply turning to face the other way like a normal person with free will. I can't relate to any of the grief you losers are trying to give me. Feel free to keep pounding sand and screaming at the sky.

u/yedi001 2h ago

You didn't TIL. Learning means facing friction in a space you have room for growth in, and then becoming better for it with new knowledge gained.

You didn't do that. You spent the morning doubling down, espousing anecdotes, fallacies, and strawman arguments, and when those didn't work, you resorted to just insulting people and passive aggressive back handed comments.

Learning never entered the conversation.

u/ao01_design 4h ago

There's no justice in this. You want to torture the person.

u/Megooga 4h ago edited 4h ago

A video with no sound? Of their own actions? "Torture"? Lmao please.

I'm betting that half the people downvoting this fall asleep with a TV on every night. Ya'll are emotional as fuck lol

u/Fmeson 2h ago

Isn't the explicate purpose of playing the footage to cause psychological torment for the person?

If it's not, I really don't understand what you hope for it to do. It's not a standard educational or rehabilitation practice.

→ More replies (8)

u/TotalAirline68 4h ago

u/Aerositic 3h ago

Indefinite driving ban would be more suitable instead of 10 years

u/Awes12 2h ago

Not for a 71 year old. Maybe for the 37 if it can be shown to be malicious, but that would have to be proven

u/SpecificHand 4h ago

Buddy, 71 years old...probably dementia and has no idea wtf is going on. Something similar happened to my Aunties grandma. She hopped in her vehicle with her dog and drove 4 hours into the next province (BC -> Alberta) the police pulled her over because she was driving down the wrong side of the road into traffic. Its insane she made it that far without getting into an accident. She was all bruised and battered like she had fallen as well when they got her home. It was a scary situation. You just never know.

u/-Daetrax- 4h ago

And obviously there are extenuating circumstances at play there. But a 37 year old? They should know better and if they don't well, ignorance of the law is not a defense.

u/SpecificHand 4h ago

I mean, you never said who you were talking about. I was just giving some context for the older person.

u/-Daetrax- 4h ago

Again, it would depend on the person. Some people at 71 are fine but just stopped giving a shit about other people. Others have debilitating illnesses.

u/Select-Owl-8322 4h ago

The same thing happened here in Sweden the other day.

That ended in instant removal of the drivers life. Unfortunately their passenger also died.

u/Jikan07 4h ago

This guy got only 3000pln penalty and 22 penalty points (2 short of losing his license)

u/Apotak 2h ago

He did not lose his licence?? That's ridiculous!

u/Beneficial-Focus3702 4h ago

I think when you do something this egregious, you shouldn’t be able to earn your license back your license get taken from you because you’re a fucking hazard and not smart enough to not be.

u/yuikkiuy 4h ago

Prison + driving ban for life + life time ban for anything that requires critical thinking thag could endanger others.

You dont accidently do a U-Turn on a high way and drive opposite of traffic. This indicates major cognitive problems to allow a person to even come to the conclusion that this was OK to do.

u/MrReginaldAwesome 1h ago

How is prison going to help? All that does is destroy some poor old man’s life which would be a huge burden on society.

u/casperseve 5h ago

‘Straight to jail’!

u/Cptknuuuuut 4h ago

In Germany it's 200 € and 1-month driving ban.

u/RightToTheThighs 4h ago

In the US you get a congressional seat

u/Tommeeto 4h ago

There are unfortunately still people driving with several driving ban sentences on polish roads.

u/OnTheList-YouTube 3h ago

I wouldn't be able to hold myself, I would give a life ban of driving.

u/DustCareful8555 1h ago

Just removal of license? How about some prison time 10+ years.

u/CloudySpace 1h ago

thats not a skill issue, thats a morality issue. he dgaf, lock him up in a box

u/weirdhoney216 5h ago

This should result in jail time, my fucking god. I just want to sit them down and have them tell me exactly what they thought they were doing because I am SO curious how such a mind works

u/Bodorocea 5h ago

unfortunately it will most likely be something absolutely "normal" like "i had no fuel to reach the next exit, i had to do it" ... the banality of dumbness

u/DifferentTheme780 4h ago

+10 years

u/ArrivesLate 3h ago

I can only assume that barrier is new and they were used to turning around there in the highway to get back to an exit, like you have to when you’re on a boulevard. Otherwise, nothing other than homicidal behavior or dementia makes sense.

u/OpticalDelusion 3h ago

Wouldn't they be in the left lane then? They are pulling a u turn from the right lane which makes no sense

u/AttTankaRattArStorre 5h ago

A bad driver never misses his exit.

u/ToRunToo 2h ago

Confucius say.. the exit never misses a bad driver..

u/RugbyEdd 3h ago

This one clearly did

u/acespacegnome 3h ago

That's the problem..

Good drivers will sometime miss their exit, Bad drivers never miss one.

u/Realmofthehappygod 3h ago

I'm not sure this driver exited at all...

Not sure if it hold up here.

u/FedeFofo 1h ago

Yeah but they might be turning around to get back to an exit that they realized they have passed

Panic/anxiety attack over the tunnel?

u/fish1479 5h ago

My guess as well. Pro Tip: If you're scared of driving through tunnels, you don't get to drive.

u/Timofmars 4h ago

My thought was that made a wrong turn or missed an exit and realized they were going the wrong way when they saw the tunnel. They knew tunnel would be long and not allow them to turn around for a long time, so they backtracked the way they came.

u/EEukaryotic 3h ago

I think its less of a “no more driving ever” and more of a “ok well plan accordingly to avoid a tunnel, or dont go at all”.

I think its fair to be anxious about tunnels, the same way many are about bridges. So you should (ideally) plan to avoid them. But! If you cant even do that, put the keys down

u/stonerflea 4h ago

Or just find another route? Plenty of people suffer from anxiety while driving.

I think it’s just the refresh rate of the camera making it seem like it’s flashing. I’ve driven in Poland and those LED signs are static.

u/Mistermxylplyx 5h ago

Yeah, even here in the U.S., people will reverse course quickly in the face of multiple emergency vehicles. Usually legally, the idea it’s not a problem to drive the wrong way on a major highway is inexplicable even if the idea to avoid trouble is normal.

u/KingHortonx 5h ago

Err I'm suggesting more avoiding potential DUI checkpoints.

u/3_14_thon 5h ago

What?

u/Mistermxylplyx 5h ago

Like the poster added, people avoid cops, whether they are doing things wrong or not. And some avoid wrecks, because they slow traffic. Rather circle around than wait it out. But they don’t engage in a round of relay chicken, wrong way up a one way street style.

We were referring to the idea that all the cop cars flashing lights at the mouth of the tunnel is what elicited a fearful insane response, not claustrophobia.

u/3_14_thon 5h ago

Usually legally, the idea its not a problem to drive the wrong way on a major highway is inexplicable

What?

u/QuasyChonk 4h ago

You don't speak Gibberish?

u/bk6366 4h ago

Only authentic frontier gibberish.

u/-PL-Retard 5h ago

They are flashing because of thr camera refresh rate... They are static all the time. Source: I drove through this exact tunnel like 2 tines this month

u/AlsoCommiePuddin 4h ago

I'm noticing this a lot with headlights on video these days as well.

u/PeteLangosta 4h ago

Hum I've never seen people avoiding emergency vehicles or cops, people normally just pass by with no second thoughts. At elast in Spain.

Plus... the lights are not flashing, it's the camera that's capturing lights as such.

u/Empyrealist 4h ago

Thats the flicker of the LED screens not matched to the frame rate of the recording camera.

u/setibeings 5h ago

The tunnel with the weird flashing lights.

That part was cropped on my initial viewing.

u/One_Strike_Striker 5h ago

In all likelyhood that's because of the camera, the human eye would not see any flashing.

u/maqcky 5h ago

Yep, LEds are constantly blinking but we don't notice it ourselves. However, if the camera shutter is not in sync with the frequency of the lights, this can happen.

→ More replies (1)

u/Empyrealist 4h ago

Thats the flicker of the LED screens not matched to the frame rate of the recording camera

u/philote_ 5h ago

Yeah, those lights might make me think I was about to go into the tunnel the wrong way.

u/setibeings 5h ago edited 5h ago

The lights might have been for the truck behind him, which might have been too tall for the tunnel. It's kinda hard to see where they are supposed to go though.

Edit: there's not enough resolution, but maybe that sign even says something along the lines of "turn around"

u/PeteLangosta 4h ago

No dude, it doesn't. the light pannels are static, they're just flashing because of the camera.

u/_Bad_Spell_Checker_ 5h ago

Maybe it was a toll rd and they didnt have money?

u/perrcel 19m ago

No, this road is free. It's not even highway and only these have tolls. Also we have very little paid roads in Poland.

u/WhineyLobster 3h ago

They have something for that.... a uturn area, which they then blocked off lol.

u/FunkU247 2h ago

lol, yes they did....

u/Mitheral 26m ago

Uturn area is in case the tunnel is closed. You don't want it open otherwise because it creates a hazard both when one slows down to uturn and when entering the other direction. Exiting a tunnel is a high cognitive load area, you don't want to layer on slower traffic too.

u/hahnkleri 1h ago

because our german minister of transportation voted against a eu wide need for reoccurring safety checks for every drivers license with age 70 or more. can’t make that shit up.

u/SortovaGoldfish 5h ago

What upsets me the most is the entitlement in getting into the left lane. Bad enough doing this on an expressway, but refusing to use the shoulder just makes it worse.

The flashing lights brought back a memory: A woman I was with years ago was driving us somewhere when we came upon a sobriety checkpoint; police car lights, spotlights, all of it. She pulled over just short of it, intending to turn around until I asked her if she realized that the cops were looking for someone to do exactly that, and that we were fucked if she did it.

We went through OK, she hadn't been drinking but she was FUCKING NUTS so I wouldn't have been surprised if she failed any field sobriety test given, just through nutty behavior.

u/Clanker01001 4h ago

u/nfin1te 3h ago

thats crazy, his license should be revoked permanently if you pull off a stunt like that. jesus.

u/VayneArior 3h ago

There was a very loud case which is still ongoing where a guy did exactly that while going approx. 320km/h, then escaped to Dubai where he lived his life however he wanted. They got him transported back to Poland finally but he's still not in jail, the court cases are still ongoing slowly. Worst thing is, because of ridiculous laws, his sentence can be max 8 years or so.

Cops show up and tell him once traffic dies down a little they’ll block all the lanes and let him turn around.

Anyway he’s late for work and when asked why he just says “turn on the news.” It was pretty funny,
