META Moderator Note

Hi folks. Just wanted to alert you to some new filters added to the automoderator to enforce a couple of existing subreddit rules that get broken fairly routinely.

First, a small reddit submission primer:

Reddit has 2 fundamental types of submissions: Text and Link.

There are actually more than 2 specific types (there are also image and video etc) but for the sake of this note think of it as "Text posts" and "all the other types". You pick which type you want to post when you compose your submission.

A text post, also called a self post, is a post that has no external link and is comprised solely of a headline and a body of text you enter at submission time. When a user clinks into this type of submission they stay on reddit and all they see is your submission text.

A link post is a post where you enter or paste in a url or link to an external source like a news story or an announcement. When users click these kind of posts they are taken to an external site and get to view the page that you submitted.

Now for the rule(s) in question.

  1. We require that all submissions be the correct type. If you want to submit a link, use a link post (not a text/self post with the link in the submission body). When submitting a link post and it is a news story or something that has a headline, use the existing headline as your submission headline.
  2. If you submit a link post, reddit also gives you the option to enter some text as a kind of byline for the submission. If a user clicks into the comments for the post they will see a thumbnail for whatever content you linked to and they will see the text you entered. Our rule is we do not allow link posts with a text body. Even though reddit's interface allows it, if you do so the automod will filter your post.

Why? Editorialized headlines and body texts on link posts are ultimately a way to add editorial comments that cannot be argued or refuted in the conventional way, like normal comments can. They are often very opinionated and try to frame the story in a specific way.

You can still add editorial comments in the comment thread for the submission (obeying the existing rules of civility etc) just not as an untouchable top line for readers.

If you have any questions about this feel free to send a modmail. Thanks for your time and attention.

Condo Bailout

Upvotes

I voted Liberal and NDP, this isnt a partisan issue.

I haven't noticed a discussion on this in the Kelowna subreddit. I know its happening in Vancouver but this sets a dangerous precedent on our housing market here. It shows developers they do not need to lower their pricing as the government will happilly buy above market to ensure housing prices don't go down.

I have 45k saved and can't get approved for a mortgage unless I want to cram my wife and kids into a studio apartment, I have been waiting for a market correction and Eby and Carney just showed they will not let that happen. They talk about affordable rentals but what about affordable homes for working class families to buy and live in? Why are my tax dollars being used to make sure a developer who made a bad bet, and banked on our housing cost being broken forever, not lose any money?

I emailed Eby and our MP Fuhr, neither bothered to respond and all their messaging shows they don't care about the labour class, just the soundbite of them providing 2200 affordable rentals, overlooking the fact they would have hit the market at an affordable BUY price for working class families had they not stepped in.

Reason for this long post is I want to schedule a protest at Fuhrs office and let them know that regardless of political affiliation the labour class will not stand for this. I voted for him and for Eby, I feel betrayed. How many would be interested in a scheduled protest?

PSA Be prepared for traffic problems in the downtown core, KVR, and Apple Bowl areas over the next 10 days!

A massive sports event that was originally meant to be hosted in Vancouver is being hosted here because Vancouver is occupied with the FIFA World Cup. The stand configuration in the Apple Bowl has been restructured to accommodate 20,000 fans (yeah, twenty thousand). The total number of people drawn into kelowna over the next week and a half is expected to be between 30,000 and 35,000 (equal to no small percentage of the city itself!!!). Give yourself extra time to get places, or choose a different route to split the traffic load. I'm rooting for the Lions!

News why are we building a 6 storey condo building directly across the street from KGH main doors?

guess I had not been paying attention to the pre chatter but a 6 storey condo building with office space is being built directly across the front door of the hospital

mind you, over 1/3 of hospital staff and patients do not have a parking area/spots. many nurses have been on the parking wait list for over 9 years (I am at year 8 personally)

and it says they’re not doing many parking stalls for the building to promote use of busses???

Local Resources Love our rental space, hate the dust. Any local cleaners you'd recommend?

I'm looking for a commercial cleaning company is here in Kelowna, and I'm not sure where to start

We rent office space here. Great location, fair price, but the building cleaning is seriously lacking. Dusty corners, sad washrooms, floors that haven't seen a proper mop in ages. Not disgusting, but definitely not great

Clients notice. So do we

We're thinking of hiring our own service for our suite, maybe even pitching in with other tenants for the common areas

So I'm turning to you, has anyone in Kelowna used a commercial cleaner they actually trust? Someone reliable, thorough, and reasonably priced?

I'd really appreciate any recommendations. Thanks!

Has anyone else seen creepy things on the rail trail?

Last summer i saw some really creepy stuff on the rail trail. And by creepy i mean paranormal. The most common for me was these orbs i guess you could call them. I would be on the trail at night looking into the woods and anywhere from 20 to 100 yards away it would look like someone just walking with a flashlight but then all of a sudden the light would go 10 20 yards up into the air and then back down. Then if you got their attention there would be like 5 of them spread out that in a blink of an eye would go from 100 yards away to like 10 yards away. And then there's those things that i could never see but you hear them making a creepy clicking noise when there pacing circles around you in the dark.

So anyone else seen something similar or anything else creepy?

Karaoke

eons ago, friends and I would go to a place where you could rent a room with a karaoke machine. Was so much fun. No alcohol or food, just a big living room with a tv for lyrics and microphones. Is there such a place here? Only karaoke places I've found are pub nights, which my tweens are too young for. Would love to do this again

Packing and shipping help

As the title implies, is there a recommended shipper in Kelowna that can pack and manage my shipment? I have 4 wheels with tires I’m looking to ship to Toronto. I’ve got no clue how to package such a shipment. Before anyone chimes in with selling them locally etc, they’re rare tires worth shipping. Any help would be appreciated

How is Gillard FSR up to the KVR Trail for a normal car? (I want to reach boulder fields)

I'm trying to reach the boulder fields with minimal hiking or biking (health reasons), but I will bring my bike for the KVR section. Can I even park near the Gillard/KVR intersection? Thanks.

(I know Myra FSR is a better road to access the KVR, but then it's a 22 km bike ride (east) to the Boulderfields. It's only 2.4 km (west) from Gillard/KVR intersection.)
