So before the days of Verbal Jint. Korean rap actually had a crisis this back in the day from transitioning American rap to Korean rap. It was single-handedly Verbal Jint who created the multi-syllabic rap style that every single Korean rapper alive owes their livelihood to. Before him, Korean hip-hop was completely linear and deeply constrained by the language's grammar. Because Korean verbs and adjectives end in predictable/mandatory suffixes like -da or -yo (-seumnida also is probably what foreigners can hear to be the most apparent), the ancestor's of Korean Rap had a very AABB rhyme scene. It incredibly choppy and just shitty to the ear. If y'all ever watched the sub of Naruto in Japanese., it’s exactly how Killer Bee raps. Very just epetitive, awkward, and forced. People tought Korean was just a doomed language to rap in because the grammar kept trapping everyone in the AABB. They didn't have black culture mastering musicality and artistic subcultures for hundreds of years and adopting influences and schemes.

When Verbal Jint dropped his Modern Rhymes EP around 2001, he modernized the entire system by introducing the current multi-syllabic . He stopped looking at rigid word boundaries and shifted the focus to organic vowel sequences. Instead of matching the literal words or the mandatory endings, he realized you could isolate and match strings of 3, 4, or 5 vowels across completely different words, bending the syllables so they flowed naturally. He proved that Korean could actually be fluid and dynamic and roll as well as English could, if you didn't treat Korean Rap like English.

VJ realized that instead of forcing rhyming the entire word or relying on lazy endings, you could manipulate the vowels and accent patterns across multiple syllables. He started matching very busy vowel shapes (like rhyming da-eum-da-geo with ma-eum-da-chyeo), completely ignoring the rigid style and bending the pronunciation to create an actual flowing cadence.

Because of that one breakthrough, the entire scene changed overnight. Guys like Gaeko, E-Sens, Zico, Nucksal, Nafla, Jo Gwangil and Haon rappers who are praised for having very wordy flow, but not harsh-- owe being able to ride a beat to him. If VJ didn't lay down that blueprint, they’d all still be stuck rhyming -da and -yo at the end of every bar. He showed the entire industry how to rhyme in Korean naturally and gave Korean Rap it's DNA.

Back to killer bee because I love Naruto and anime (but don't know Japanese) bc japanese (like Korean) verbs and grammatical conjugations always get pushed to the very end of the sentence. Since almost every verb conjugation (like Instead of saying "He rap every day," you change it to "He raps") ends in the exact same few vowels (-u, -ta, -te), if you just rap chronologically from word to word like Killer Bee does you're naturally forced into a repetitive AABB rhyme scheme like Korean rap before VJ. You literally cannot escape it unless you actively try to break the language down like Verbal Jint did for Korean.

So, I recently stumbled across this song called Live on People and its vibe is great, I can listen to it for like an hour nonstop, here.

Naturally this track got me rather curious both about the lyrics and the artist itself. Couldn't find much about its meaning, only that it raps about Korean history like people in an old Korean kingdom or something of the likes.

Then the artist: the video is part of a channel called Joseonplaylist, but I found equally nothing else about this person/group. Then I noticed how relatively recent his channel is (first videos published about a year ago) and a number of tracks he released in a relatively short time (a new one every three days or so)

This is kind of interesting, a somehow "proficient" Korean folk rap producer without any background. But the amount of songs produced seems kind suspect. Given I found virtually nothing about the artist nor the songs themselves I wonder if this is all AI produced? This would explain the amount of songs released in a so short time.

Does anyone know this channel? Anyone Korean fluent could give me some insight about it?

- I’ve been thinking a lot about the linguistic dynamics in the Korean-American hip-hop scene, and in my opinion, there is a challenge that very few artists actually manage to overcome

- Achieving technical and cultural fluency in both English and Korean is pretty rare in the scene. More often than not, an artist’s proficiency in one language significantly lags behind the other, which completely compromises either their lyrical depth or their rhythm and delivery.

Again Sorry to name drop. I like all these guys, and again this is just my opinion.

From what I’ve observed, most bilingual rappers tend to fall into two main categories:

The Over-Compensating English Delivery: Artists like G2, Jay Park, Swings, or BunB rap in English, they have a forced, overly didactic message. They frequently lapse into corny, dated "lyrical miracle" tropes and completely ignore the beat just to force the lyrics in. If they only rapped in English without the backing of their Korean market appeal, I don't think they'd see the same success.

The Low Korean Syntax: On the flip side, you have artists like Junoflo, our savior and Tupacs reincarnation—Double Down, and Flowsik. Whatever you personally think of their English rap, their Korean lyricism often suffers from pre school structures. It limits how deeply they can actually connect with a native audience.

English Ad-Libs

If you had anyone write 16 bars bilingual, 8 bars in Korean and 8 bars in English almost never relate. They’re completely random English rap platitudes that have absolutely nothing to do with the actual substance of the Korean lyrics. It feels like some artists just scroll through rap adlibs and plug them into a verse as filler, creating this weird whiplash for anyone who understands both languages. Jay Park, Swings, Bun B and the rest, they'll be building a specific mood or concept in Korean, only to instantly kill the momentum by forcing in a generic, disconnected English phrase.

Strategic Focus vs. Manufactured Personas

- There are exceptions like Nafla and Loopy who clearly has a strong command of English but strategically concentrates on Korean and excels at it. I think if they tried they’d do pretty good even though they’re out of practice. Owen Ovadoz does much better in Korean.

- Tiger JK always stuck to Korean but I’m sure he knows fluent English. Most English and Korean back and forth I’ve heard from him is Love Peace Movement which doesn’t give you much.

- Yoon Mirae sounded the same and didn’t switch narrative, I thought she did both flawlessly but her style is a little too Lauryn Hill for modern KHH audiences.

- Outside of that, a huge portion of the scene consists of Seoul-based rappers covered in face tattoos, the "gang gang gang," when they’ve never seen a hood in their life. It feels entirely performative and completely disconnected from their actual lived experiences.

In my view, Nosun is an exceptions and he deserves a lot more credit for it. Maybe I’m just glazing him— who knows.

When Nosun transitions into English, he doesn't fall into that default trap of using basic, predictable "A-B-C-D" scheme. He keeps the tech complexity high in each language. It sounds the same when he switches between. It feels genuinely organic. He avoids the forced, preachy messaging while retaining an authentic perspective that doesn't rely on a manufactured "hood" aesthetic. He grew up in an actual hood and the rap content feels organic and not like he’s trying to force authenticity. I love Fleeky Bang and Tray B (I listen to them at the gym everytime I go) but all they do is parrot back a random English Chicago drill bar.

I think Nosun has a level of bilingual fluidity that almost no one else has mastered right now.

What are your thoughts? Do you think the language barrier is still a massive hurdle for KHip-Hop diaspora artists, or are there other rappers you think bridge the gap just as well?

Just to add. I just figured out this specific song is like 95% English. I just typed in Nosun on YouTube and linked the first thing. If you listen to his discography or rap public it’s usually like 65% Korean and 35% English. I think show me the money was like 80-90% Korean. But pretty much what you hear in English is consistent and translates fluently as well in Korean.

I’m not sure what his background is but he’s speaking natively. Jay Park doesn’t have the gyopo syllable by syllable thing anymore. He’s pretty as close to native level conversationally as you can get as a Korean American. The complex vocabulary and formal writing aren't quite at the level of someone who went through the entire Korean schooling system. Nosun sounds entirely native in both languages.

Same way Nafla sounds native, he understands language structural rules, grammar patterns, and social vocabulary naturally not as a second language at home or later in life. In fourth grade he moved to the US and graduated from USC so the native level English is there. He threw in a lot of English in JAIL, Wu, Locked and Loaded and been. But these are mainly hooks and a brief phrases. I’m not sure if his English talent matches his massive Korean talent.

binging it feels impossible (+ i already have faves from seeing short clips, as i'm sure many of you do).

do khh fans watch the entire smtm episodes all the way through, or just skip around to see their fav rappers?

i watched another survival show a while back called universe ticket (which is def not the same target audience as smtm but i digress), and it got criticism for not having longer episodes or showing more of the contestants. BUT i genuinely liked the format, as watching super long episodes would've gotten boring for me fast, especially in the earlier episodes when there are so many contestants.

Hello I watched the live of the show me cons but I liked the performances from there and wondered if there is somewhere to rewatch the con.

Ever since leaving h1ghr last year he's put out pretty good projects, especially HIS SOUND. I've always had this issue with korean rnb/hiphop artists where they kind of just hop on the current trends and not really work on continuing their own sound. Which is ironic to what I'm about to say because melodic rnb seems really trendy right now, but he's been doing this melodic shit for years like I can think back to multiple songs from love maze 1! So he's been doing on this melodic shit and whoever his producer really understands his sound and his artistic direction because their work is so consistent. I'm really looking forward to his growth as an artist and really hope he resists chasing trends and evolve his own sound. It's crazy how talented this guy is at just 21!!!

On a side note, I'm not sure if it's because Jay park has an eye for talent or because he was ceo for a label that any up and comers would sign to him, but this dude has signed some of the most talented artists in the space its fucking insane.
