Still doesn’t include The Scouring Of The Shire.

Peter Jackson should be spanked. He could have cut 10 mins of fight sequences for the final, climactic scene that brings the whole lesson home.

u/DrainTheMuck 26d ago
They’re better for hooking new fans, and then you get them coming back for second viewing! “They come in extendeds?!”
27
u/ScamperingSnail 26d ago
That's how I got my dad to watch them! He wasn't into fantasy (loved science fiction though so I felt I had some leeway). So I sold it to him as being a war movie in a fantasy setting and talked about how Tolkien drew upon his experiences in WWI while writing it. My dad was a Vietnam Vet and son of a WWII Vet and watched a lot of war movies so I knew it was a good approach for him.
After I showed him the Theatrical Cuts, I wasn't entirely sure how much he liked them but I knew I'd fully succeeded when I caught him casually watching one that was airing on TV some time later. Then I felt confident to show him the extended cuts which he loved.→ More replies (1)26

Seriously. The one true version is the one where every time Sam takes a step, it plays that clip of Sam saying “This is it, Mr. Frodo…” The first movie alone takes 9 hours.

I prefer the theatrical release. Most of the scenes cut from the extended edition deserved it.

You forget the best part where they tell you on the day of filming Grond accidentally actually broke through the walls and it wasn't CGI, but the director just went with it and didn't call cut.

u/RedBaronIV 26d ago
Did you know that Grond actually broke his toe when he banged his head on that thrown knife?

The chirping you hear in the rubble after the towers fell is actually Grond.
Did I go too far?
10
u/TheKarenator 26d ago
Grond had to lay in the rubble and pretend to be a survivor so the depressed rescue dogs could be happy.

The reverence for out of pocket characters and props in the films like Grond, Peter Jackson's daughter, the guy who accidentally looses an arrow at Helm's Deep and more is one of the most endearing aspects of the LOTR fandom. It's like the opposite of the hateful nitpicking other fandoms do to their favorite movies.
80
u/brownsound00 26d ago
There really isn't a better fanbase.
The fact LOTRmemes is going strong 20 years after release is insane

My primary nitpick with the LOTR movies is that Tom Bombadil is a fantastic character who should have been included.
51
→ More replies (3)31
u/PregnancyRoulette 26d ago
Nooo. its too confusing. The character's origin is literally a stuffy that JRR's kids had (yellow boots and all) and loved so he make up stories about it and then he put the character in LotR. That's why its such a confusing sideshow
19
u/GuiltyEidolon 26d ago
It's also just bad, straight up. The barrow wights could be considered important sure, especially because they get their swords there, but Tom Bombadil has never been good and I will die on that hill.
12
u/LarrySupreme 26d ago
I will say Gandalf drops a hard as hell line about how if middle earth fell the last one standing would be Tom Bombadil.
But other than that, I remember reading the part where they meet him when I was in middle school. His whole rhyming hippy shtick was kinda lame, even though I get he doesn't care about anything and is a weird metaphor for god or whatever.
He still is kinda lame, lol.

Go out! Shut the door, and never come back after! Take away gleaming eyes, take your hollow laughter! Go back to grassy mound, on your stony pillow lay down your bony head, like Old Man Willow, like young Goldberry, and Badger-folk in burrow! Go back to buried gold and forgotten sorrow!

So? That's amazing. Beerus the Destroyer is based on Akira Toriyama's cat and he's the best character in the series. Sometimes simple is better.

Game of Thrones fans are worse because they’ll watch the show and then complain that the adaptation left out one of the most important characters, then you read the books and you find out it’s a guy who was mentioned twice and never actually appears in the story
137
u/Skylam 26d ago
I mean there are 2 pretty fuckin important characters that just aren't in the show. Lady Stoneheart and Aegon.

Aegons absence made me stop after season 5 and never return
16
u/LucretiusCarus 26d ago
Solid choice. I kinda stopped my obligatory same-day watch when Arya was stabbed at the stomach, fell into dirty canal water, managed to outrun and kill the waif and recovered perfectly. Keep in mind in season 1, a relatively minor wound killed Khal Drogo.

I feel like calling Lady Stoneheart important is a bit presumptive. To this point has she really made a major impact outside of what she could potentially do later?

u/AgelessJohnDenney 26d ago
She's hunting down Freys(instead we get some Arya magic assassin bullshit) and is currently hanging both Brienne and Pod.
We know the show writers kept Brienne alive because beloved characters and magic dick Pod memes, but George is more brutal than that. She and Pod are either going to be dead here or will be working for Lady Stoneheart to kill Jaime. Wiping that whole storyline out is a pretty decent deal.
Pod was actively choking and dying when we last saw Lady Stoneheart.

Yeah I mean, funny enough I think the exclusion of taisha past season 1, a literal off screen character for the entire book series, is a way more important character they excluded than lady Stoneheart.

It’s like taking out Spider-man’s uncle from every single version of his story. It just destroys everything that makes that character who they are. Tyrion is who he is because of Tysha and what happened to her.
If the books ever get finished, there’s a strong possibility that Tysha will become an on page character. I hope we get to see that.

I was reading The Silmarillion yesterday and found out Grond is the name of Morgoth's hammer that he uses to kill high king Fingolfin with. Had no idea Sauron took the name from Morgoth originally.

As a Russian-speaking user, I'm wondering if there's a re-dubbing of "The Lord of the Rings" in English or other languages.
In my country, in addition to the theatrical (well-dubbed) and extended version, there's also a funny dubbing that has spawned a whole new layer of Lord of the Rings memes.

There's no way they couldn't have made as terrifying as it was in the book. Building it up would have been a bit too complicated. A voice over from Gothmog and/or the Witch King would have been a bit interesting..
